This was a fantastic but also a little tragic story. I remember as a young child in the 1960’s we would go visit Seal Rocks, the huge telescope you could pay to look out, and go into the Cliff House to eat. One of the best displays was all about General Tom Thumb! Original furniture and clothing from him and his wife , a bed and numerous photos! It was amazing. I really connected to it as I was little myself at the time. Too bad this was all lost during a fire. Too bad people wanted to treat Lavinia as if she were a child! Had to have been frustrating. I’m happy to have watched this amazing video! Thanks so much!
Lost from a "fire". Like every major city has fires to destroy our heritage and history.
Tom had a lovely adapted home built for Lavinia, featuring a small cast iron stove as she loved to cook for her husband.
Would be so neat to see their home, does it still exist? Did their family members ever talk of them I wonder. I have googling to do 😂
The business with the baby is crazy! I'm sure Barnum just slipped the attendants some money and "rented" the baby.
Right! The baby was never mentioned again. Lol
Back then you could literally walk into, or essentially mail order orphaned children.

This was fascinating.
there is a child buried in England somewhere that died in 1873 from pneumonia, that has them listed as the parents. it's in the church records and everything. and there's a gravestone with the baby's dates of birth and death.
There is also a child buried in the same cemetery as Lavinia that claims to be thier daughter "Minnie"....
Too bad there was no DNA technology at the time.

It is unfortunate that Lavinia didn't simply sell some of her real estate & boat for additional income.
Super interesting, and a little sad. Money, greed, fame. To often have the same results, it seems poor people get a gift and, they are in that moment, the happiest people in the world. And yet, so many of the rich, they just never seem satisfied, so sad 🥺. Always a good video, always told with respect and kindness 😊 thank you ❤❤❤.

I have a photo of Tom Thumb and his wife standing on the balcony of the White house after their marriage. On the back of the old frame in pencil is the date 1877.
I've seen this story covered in other YT videos, and these "historians" all claimed the baby was real and actually theirs.

@@ForgottenLives I don't think it's as taboo as differentiating someone with autism from people of "normal intelligence". But yeah in general the word "normal" is kind of hot-button nowadays, so the safer bet is "average."

❤ I never had any trouble with dwarfs I mean they were all nice and one was a friend in high school but when I met my 3rd nephews wife who was five foot even she had the attitude and a huge chip on her shoulder I was taken a back by this but then I found out she was teased and bullied in school and I knew first hand what that's like it sucks, but that's no excuse for her attitude towards me. Now we joke about height
5 feet tall? Why was she teased, that's not dwarfism, my 19 year old daughter is 4ft 10 inches, and she is just considered petite, she isn't drastically shorter than her classmates...? Was she bullied for a different reason?
Dwarfism is a genetic condition, NOT a specific (lack of) height. Sheesh.

@@wheresmyoldname she wouldn't say anything about that but my little sister s best friend was ,4'11" and she was a ball of energy and the best person around and my third nephew's grand mom was 4 foot even more feisty.
I'm 5 foot and 1 inch, have never been bullied.
So I take it they didn't want a big wedding just a small one with a small group of guests and and it didn't go over big , and only a small article in the paper about it

@@sophroniel I respectfully disagree. I think 99% of people watching the video know that Freak Shows (a show exploiting people with deformities or rare physical disorders) is wrong. It is a modern value as is using the term "PC" which wasn't even used till the late 1980's. But that value of seeing that it was wrong didn't start till sometime after WWII.
By using terms such as PC, feminism, racism, homophobia etc you are applying a Present *subjective perception* to the past rather than objectively telling a story about the past. And it's a slippery slope from "Presentism" to political bias.
