One thing sarmale are made different depending on the region you are in, in the Moldova region, there is mince meat rice and vegetables added to the blend as well as some tomato paste. There are also recipes that are amazing but very rare to find, my grandma used to make them, like sarmale with "crupe" basically instead of rice a type of polenta, delicious. You should always have sarmale with sour cream, ours in Romania is just a little bit different than anywhere else, at least in my experience.

We make sarmale rolled in vine leaves too who are best with yogurt or sour cream, BULZ made from sheep cheese rolled in mamaliga and fried over a fire , fisherman bors made from many types of fishes, miel haiducesc ( haiduc style lam). A good place but a little pricy is Sura Dacilor where you can eat and drink a few romanian type of dishes in a beautiful atmosphere.

Hello there Mr. Giant, just found your channel and started binge watching your videos, you have a new subscriber here. As a romanian i like most of the meals we have here, but my favorite from the traditional ones is tochitură, it's mostly eaten in winter, but you can buy packages of the meat selection in extra season as well (not as good but still decent). Think the image from pomana porcului with sunny side up eggs, small sausages, polenta (mămăligă) on the side, brânză de burduf (some sort of salty cheese stored in a dried stomach of a goat or sheep) and murături asortate (a selection of brine pickled vegies). There are variations of this, some people add chicken/pork liver as well and skip the cheese or the eggs, but what i described is more or less the norm. Don't forget to pair it with țuică (not mandatory, but works well). Have a pleasant day Mr. Giant and thank you for covering content on my country, hope to see more on this in the future, take care. :D

i never liked any of those foods when I was a kid, not even the dessert . Mici was the only exception, and tends to be the ones everyone universally adores. But as I grew older, I slowly started to enjoy the other ones. Now I'm absolutely crazy for the tripe soup, pork knuckle or liver and heart, for example. I don't know if it's a matter of taste buds evolving with age, or maybe Romanian food is a matter of habit- the more you eat, the more you start enjoying it (a good analogy would be avocado is for example)

I realize I stumble upon this a teeeeny tiny bit late ( LOL), but if there's one thing that isn't mentioned enough in Romanian food videos, it's dessert. Well, more like, several types of it. There are so many cakes and pies and baked or fried goodies... I'm telling you, you thought you got hungry from this top, you ain't seen nothing yet. There are saltine crackers ( "saratele"), apple pies, or cheese pies, several types of sponge cake oriented goodies, certain cookies that made our childhood magical cause most of our moms and grannies knew to make with recipes passed down from generation to generation.. yeah, they're gonna make cozonac and papanasi look plain. Also. for the people who aren't very meat oriented, there are plenty dishes that are super yummy and filling, like "ghiveci", "zacusca" , "ciulama de ciuperci","fasole batuta", "salata de vinete/fasole/conopida/ciuperci" ( don't let the name "salata" aka salad fool you, it's actually more of a spread) etc.

    Sarmale its the best

  • @octavianpiano694
    @octavianpiano694 9 месяцев назад

ok this guy pissed me off really bad, he doesnt know anything about romanian culture or food. so im gonna clarify as much as i can:
firstly, how can you put sarmale on number 10? sarmale is THE romanian food. number 1 in all charts, THE must try when you come to romania. the description is ok, except that we can also make sarmale with grape leaf instead of cabbage and we also make stuffed peppers (put the mixture in bell peppers instead of rolling it in cabbage or grape leaf). traditionally, when we make sarmale, we also make stuffed peppers in the same pot. besides the sauce we boil them in, we also put pork belly (or pork fat in general) at the bottom, for more flavor. we also have a special type of sarmale without meat, but instead with traditional romanian white cheese (we have a lot of types of white cheese, but this one is called "urda"). this type is only made with grape leaf and never with cabbage or peppers.
salata de boeuf - the traditional way to do it is with beef, but a lot of times its made with no meat at all and thats my own favourite actually.
mici (this is pronounced as in "mitch" and its 1 syllable only, the last i is mute and never ever pronounced as this guy does) - the most traditional way is with minced/ground pork and mutton, not pork and beef. sure, we have mici of pork and beef as well or just 1 type of meat only (never chicken though). they contain sodium bicarbonate indeed, but they also contain (the most traditional way) beer. thats why theyre so juicy. iver never heared of garlic in mici, but... i dont know, you might as well put some.
tripe soup - this is never served with mujdei. mujdei is minced garlic, which the tripe soup already contains (a lot of) by default. this is something that could certainly turn you from a big skeptical into the biggest fan, BUT this sour soup is probably the one romanian soup which requires the most skill to make. if its made by someone who never made before or just doesn't pay attention (which by the way, a lot of restaurants do), you will be very dissapointed.
here i want to mention that in romania we have a lot of sour soups and tripe soup is something more on the niche than the others. i will mention these as my top favourites: ciorba radauteana (kinda of similar but with chicken instead of tripe), ciorba de vita (beef), ciorba de perisoare (meanballs) and ciorba de peste (fish - also more on a niche). ciorba de burta and ciorba radauteana are made with sour cream, but the others are not. we add the sour cream right before eating them.
varza a la cluj - this is more often served with polenta (mamaliga). the sour cream is something you add by taste and my favourite is without.
fasole cu ciolan - most traditional way is with smoked pork ribs (ciolan means bone). we also have varza cu ciolan (cabbage with pork, almost like varza a la cluj except it has pork as well). this is eaten in all seasons, not only in winter... traditionally you also take a raw spicy pepper alongside, goes very well and goes well with polenta (most traditional side dish in romania)
papanasi - there are 2 types of papanasi in romania. the ones mostly served in restaurants are the type presented in that picture, which is with sour cream, not cottage cheese. the other type is the homemade ones, which ARE which cottage cheese (which are not anywhere close to what you see in that picture. these ones are boiled and the dough is made a bit differently, while the ones you see in the picture are much closer to a donut and fried). the topping is usually not jam. in romania we have something called "dulceata" (which literally means "sweetie"), which is something between a jam and a syrup (its like a syrup with fruit chunks).
cozonac - first of all, those ones in the pics look really awful... most of them look much better than that, at least much much fluffier and they never have that spiral shape as in a roll (as presented in the video - idk where he got that video from but thats certainly not romanian cozonac). the filling is most traditionally made with cocoa and walnuts or turkish delight (which is like jelly), but we also have cozonac cu branza (sweet cheese, mostly a mixture of cottage cheese with sugar and egg - i think). this type of cozonac sometimes has raisins as well.
pomana porcului - "pomana" in romania is some food we give to other people to honor other people (usually the relatives who passed away). its not "the honor of the pig" but more like "the honor with some pork", because its traditionally given after the preparation of pork dishes for christmas or easter (before the actual holiday). this dish is arguably the less popular dish than "tochitura" which is something i would rather eat anytime instead of pomana porcului. tochitura is similar, but each region of romania has its own way to cook it (its not necessarily some difference of how restaurants cook it than the people cook it at home as this guy says).
"tuca" is written "tuica" and pronounced as in "tsuica" and its a particular type of palinca. tuica is only made out of plums, while palinca is the whidespread term and its made from a lot of types of fruits. we drink palinca before all meals, as we say "its good for digestion". its not only paired with pomana porcului, but with pretty much any meal that contains heavy meat or cheese. while pomana porcului is something holiday-specific, palinca (or just tuica) is not.
drob de miel - this is made from sheep (or chicken/cow) organs the most traditional way. its not lean meat as this guy says and its definetly not the only dish from these which is served cold, as salata de boeuf is also served cold as well. also question mark for the choice of these 2 dishes. we have "racituri", much much more popular than drob or salata de boeuf. racituri is also served cold and its basically a jelly soup with pork and garlic, a must try anytime over the other 2. and i would also add that drob could be something more nieche-y than racituri since organs are not everyone's taste.
hopefully i didnt write anything thats only specific to my region and i clarified a lot of stuff that this guy will never know about since hes clearly never been to romania and never ate (at least a lot of) these dishes...
