Rob seems so beyond normal and so humble. Amazing that he dug himself out of the pit that was his childhood and teenage years. So talented and I think so many respect him for how he cares for his wife and all her challenges. If there were more people in this world with that kind of integrity... I'm just so impressed the more I learn about him.
Rob Thomas is the most underrated mega star ever. He is a mega star but not at the same time if you know what I mean.?. Imo he is a top 5 vocalist of all time. Matchbox 20 is the same. Just awesome music.
He is such a nice guy! Good for him. I wish he and his wife a long happy life together, continued success, and for both, but her especially, good health!
I was immediately smitten with Rob's voice when I first heard him sing many years ago over the air waves. I am 60 now, and still pause (and jack up volume) everytime I hear his voice pop up on my play lists, on random overheads or XM radio stations. In my opinion, he is an an under-rated singer/songwriter. This interview just sealed the deal. Mr. Thomas is the real deal, humble, talented and definitely up there with the one's who obviously have "it". His voice is uniquely recognizable. Check out his version of "She's Gone" on Daryl's (Hall) House. There is a reason he was invited to jam with Daryl's band. Rock on Rob Thomas ❤
Loved hearing how he got from the childhood to here. He always seems so kind, grounded, and unaware of his mega talent! I loved him from the first album. And as a 62 year old woman I totally agree with how each decade is seen differently looking back. I have no doubt I'll be a fan as long as he's a writer and performer...a worldwide mega super star musician. I love that he's going to play to any size crowd that will want to hear him❤️ Count me in!!
Stunning interview, I've been a Matchbox fan for over 20 years and recently had the privilege of going to one of their concerts here in NZ. It was first class.
At 71, I hear a RT/MT song & remember what was happening in my life at that time. I am looking forward to hearing what he is doing at 60. Great interview!❤
Just came across this and such a great conversation. Rob Thomas is so kind and humble. Love his artistry and sound. Of course, Matchbox Twenty is so different and I connected with so many of his songs. Spoke to my soul and mind . So excited to see him tonight in Michigan .
Love how grounded Rob is and how he fought to keep 3 AM. Not all have the strength to work through childhood traumas and acknowledge our parents did the best they could with their own childhood traumas. May the good days for his wife outweigh the bad. Hope he keeps doing what he loves for years to come!❤
He is creepily down to earth... That's so awesome!! I've loved Matchbox 20 for yearrrrrrs, but I quit listening to em cause I got into music that was a bit harder hitting. Like Tool, Chevelle, Deftones, Primus. For some reason though, Matchbox 20 came to mind & I had to listen... They are definitely as great as I remember... OOOooohhhhh & I cannot freaking believe this man is in his 50's??!!! What the shit??! He looks like he may be in his mid 30's.... DAMN!!
Have you had a chance to go to a MB20 concert? The energy is AMAZING start to finish. Change by deftones is one of my favorite songs & idk why they don't play Wynona's Big Brown Beaver on any of the rock oldie's stations cuz it's definitely a classic. lmao But I've been obsessed with Rob Thomas for almost 30 years, he'll always be my #1.
Fine is what I'd say lol he's fine. Me and his wife had the exact same thought the first time we saw him he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen.
I saw Rob and his band at the Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City, IA and it was a full house. That venue was built in 1927 and was a vaudeville/movie palace before being renovated in 1999. It still has the original upper level suspended balconies. When "Smooth" was played the whole balcony structure was swaying back & forth because of people grooving to the beat and it was quite the experience to be standing up there. (No one was sitting for that song.) It was one of the best concerts I've seen and I've seen many given I'm over 70.
Rob Thomas is one of my favorite singers and songwriters. He seems to be a truly wonderful person as well and his lyrics show his deep intelligence and emotion.
This was a great interview. Guy never talked over Rob or interrupted Rob. Guy had great questions, and was prepared regarding Rob’s career-I’m liking and subscribing.
Be Rob Thomas, he’s one the greatest songwriters to ever exist. He made the point that I Agree with, Shows how shows like American Idol or The Voice can’t give you the intangibles or luck to make you a star and you remember how he said that it was slow steady progress to bigger and bigger venues.
My husband just donated a song to me and I think it was one of your latest songs about staying together. We have been married for 43 years I salute you and God bless you and your wife and family. I love how you're so honest we first learned through observational learning and environmental learning this is a great part of our developmental growth.
The story reminds me of a lot of the young people who we've crossed paths with, who come to us when there's nowhere else to go and we try to just keep them going. Glad your story worked out, Rob.
Yeah, Rob... No one, but no one gets to take 3AM away from you!! This is part of you, your life, your history. Glad that went to the mat for that amazing song!! It's a heart-wrenching song, but soooo meaningful, soooo powerful.
I’ve been to more concerts than I can remember. My first concert was Frampton comes alive in 76 when I was 12. I went to live aid and Live Earth. Matchbox 20s 2023 concert was one of the best I’ve ever been to.
This guy is literally the reason I love to perform. 3am was one of the first songs I ever learned how to play and I natually took on the Rob Thomas style of singing. In turn I became comfortable with the sound of my own singing voice as I used to hate how I sound.
Fantastic interview! Matchbox has just finished touring Australia and New Zealand! They were fabulous I could say I’ve lost count of the mb20 and RT concerts but it’s 12! Counting SWA shows. Ollie blends into the couch so well 🐶
Apologies for the length. 30 minute mark: In late Jan/early Feb of 1997, I heard “Long Day” on WZZO out of Allentown Pa. The first time I heard it, I was floored. Left an instant impact as a great rock tune. So much so that I mentioned it to my drummer in my cover band at the time that we should pick it up. It hadn’t been getting a ton of air play at that moment, but it sounded so good. My band started working on it at rehearsals. The five of us just couldn’t make it fly like I thought it should. The last week in Feb., my drummer, like Monday or Tuesday, asks me what I was doing on the upcoming Thursday night. He mentioned, “The band that did that “Long Day” song is playing at Lupo’s in Allentown. Wanna go see them?” As it turned out, my friends’ band, The Armadillos, was the local opening act that night. So it was a chance to hang with them too. Even better, since it was a WZZO promo event, the cover was only $.95 since 95.1 is the radio station frequency. Thursday arrives and late in the afternoon, the Lehigh valley and western NJ get a fair amount of wet snow and mixed precipitation that started at like 2 in the afternoon and carried on into the early evening hours and made the roads messy. My drummer called and said he would drive is 4wd SUV. So we went despite the weather. We get to the venue about a half hour before the Armadillos take the stage. Lupo’s could hold easily 400-600 people. The weather, I’m sure was a factor. The relative anonymity of the headliner was also a factor as well. There was maybe 50-70 people in the room, tops. Not many. The Armadillos had a really solid Allentown following so, I’m gonna chalk it up to the weather….side note…the drummer for The Armadillos at this time was Kevin Miller who would go on to be Fuel’s drummer. Anyhow, this was right at the infancy of the wide usage of the internet. I certainly didn’t have it at the time. So though I had heard MB20, I’d never seen them and had no idea what they looked like. Shortly, after my friends The Armadillo’s finished their set, I chatted with my two friends in the band at the bar for a few minutes and headed to the men’s room while the second band, The Guffs, got set to play their set. In the men’s room, I recognize the guitar player of the Armadillos and he is talking with 3 other guys. One of the guys is a very short guy wearing a wool stocking cap. The second guy has this beatle-like haircut and round dark-framed glasses. The third guy is rather plain looking and sitting on the sink counter right next to the urinal that I was about to use. His fashion choice was what caught my attention the most. He was wearing a red, frill-fronted tuxedo shirt, black dress pants that were too big, and brown old man loafers. I thought he was just some hard luck Allentown resident who came to hang out at Lupo’s to get out of the cold and wet. The short guy with the stocking cap made his way out of the men’s room while I was using it. He also had a camera…which I thought was an odd thing to take into the men’s room. As I returned to the table where my drummer and I were sitting, I noticed the guy in the stocking cap drop to a knee and begin snapping pictures of The Guffs in action. The lead singer of The Guffs made a joke about that guy being at every show. I hadn’t put it together yet. The Guffs finish and MB20 is getting ready to take the stage. Even at this early stage of their careers, they had a crew who set their gear for them. Lights come up…and the guy in the wool hat, Paul, is playing drums, the guy with beatle-like hair cut, Brian, is playing bass and the guy sitting on the counter in the red shirt and old man loafers while I was taking a leak is Rob Thomas singing. I watched their set literally at Kyle’s feet. The room was so empty that I could stand right at the stage. It was awesome. About three-four weeks later “Push” was released and now everybody knows who MB20 is.
Wow. Thank you for a fascinating interview. I have always liked Matchbox 20. But never knew much about the band or Rob Thomas. Though i had known that 3 AM was about his mom. I have to say that i really love his performance with Santana.!! Wooo. Great great song. I love this interview. He is a very interesting artist.
Rob Thomas is by far, in the top 3 of my favourite artists and I have brought many people on the journey. It’s some of those deep cuts that I so relate to. Great interview, thank you 😊
I love Rob Thomas. But I never thought I would sit through this whole interview. And then I found out that Rob Thomas isn't just a great songwriter and musician, He's a truly gifted human being. He can put words together in a conversation as brilliantly as he can in a song. And why would I expect different? But I'm still wowed and inspired. All right!
Feet on the ground, just doing what he's great at and enjoying the moment. Inspiring. Great interview. Always good to hear someone who's listening to what's being said, then asking follow-up questions & going down whatever path the conversation goes. So much better than just a pre-prepared list of generic questions.
Well Rob, you were my favourite band at the time, but it was always because of your voice. “I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell” holy hell, no one had written like that before and your voice, oh my god, such interpretation and so impassioned! I believed it. A true artist. I thought you were always cool. My alternative music boyfriend of the time loved you too. I just want more of that voice.
I enjoyed learning this interview there were things about Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty that I didn't know. I just enjoyed the music. And now I kind of get where some of the music came from.
Thanks for this interview , its so good to get the back story behind the inspiration some of those songs I love so much and also Rob's story to success.
I can’t imagine never wanting to hear both the band and Rob alone in his solo music. I was at the Nürburgring Rock am Ring summer 2000. I have seen you in many locations with the band and solo. He is a humble person which honestly makes him even better as a person.
People only know what they need to know. What Rob is saying is exactly true. Matchbox 20 were blazing the charts when they arrived on the scene and I saw them at a college in Pennsylvania way back then and they were great and continue to be one of my personal favorites almost 30 years later. A new album will be great.
Rob Thomas has been my crush since the first time I heard 3AM on Limewire. A 3rd grade student of mind said MB20 was his favorite band. He said we could bring our phones into concerts so so many versions of their songs appeared on Limewire. I remember the period with Mad Season, U2, Bare Naked Ladies, Sugar Ray, etc it was golden and Smoothe captures Soho tons tee.
"I don't think I took anything seriously. The thing was, I didn't take it seriously, but at the same time, I spent 18 hours a day doing it." -Rob Thomas. This is the quote of the century.
Amazing that he is who is is. Such a strong man. SO AMAZING. SO TALENTED. I AM SO GLAD HE FOUND HIS NICH IN LIFE. ALSO THAT HE FOUND HIS WIFE WHO GAVE HIM WHAT HE NEEDED
Smart man rob 👍🏻 your journey of good and bad in your life has made you who you are today ! Music became your fortune of love , great talent that will lead on forever congrats for still playing on ❤
BS. Matchbox 20 is the coolest band at that time. A friend Hurd a song on the radio as I drove him to work and Unwell started playing and he seriously asked me “who’s this” I can always tell a Rob Thomas song. They were not bland. And I think that he hearing so much country music that he knows a song needs a story that touches your heart or your soul.
Hi Guy, I would have liked to hear his inspiration for writing "Push". The underlying story and details of the making of that song. I really loved that song.
Rob Thomas met Marisol in Montreal in 1998 and they got engaged in October 1998. They got married in October 2, 1999 because they were on Instyle Celebrity Weddings on ABC.
When Rob shares the magical parts, this interviewer misses them. He hunts for why Rob can write from a “how to” linear processor mind. Artists get this all of the time.
One of the most signature voices of the last 50 years.
How does this have so few views? its an excellent interview. Rob Thomas is a blessed light in the world
Agreed. Amazing interview.
Matchbox Twenty is everything!!! Rob Thomas is one of the greatest vocalists ever. He looks incredible. Rob has not aged.
Rob seems so beyond normal and so humble. Amazing that he dug himself out of the pit that was his childhood and teenage years. So talented and I think so many respect him for how he cares for his wife and all her challenges. If there were more people in this world with that kind of integrity... I LOVE Rob Thomas!! I've seen that version of She's Gone - it is amazing!!
Rob is amazing and so empathetic towards his parents. I imagine he is an incredible father and husband. Matchbox twenty will always be my #1
Rob is so real but yet so aware, I love it!
What a great interview.
Rob Thomas..so great on so many levels. This interview introduced many more levels.
Loved hearing how he got from the childhood to here. He always seems so kind, grounded, and unaware of his mega talent! I loved him from the first album. “Stunning” really?
You’re “stunned?”
Good interview, can’t say I was stunned by it.
Saw you there!
@@cashcowcommissions6790well what would an interview need to have for YOU to be "stunned?"
I wore out my CD of Yourself or someone like you back in the 90’s… it’s fun to hear the history behind it ❤
At 71, I hear a RT/MT song & remember what was happening in my life at that time. I am looking forward to hearing what he is doing at 60. Great interview!❤
In the 90s and 2000s I listened to Matchbox 20 all the time. It was great being able to listen to their story directly from Rob.
Brilliant clear thinking mind in a humble but inspiring soul!

Being in your 50s is glorious. You're still young, but the kids treat you as elderly.

Thank God you are Rob Thomas. I really enjoyed Rob's candid, heartfelt interview. He is so talented. ❤
I Loved this Band, live on forever Matchbox 20🎉🎉🎉

I so needed to hear this interview. Still a great, and incredibly real. Rock on, Rob!
My husband just donated a song to me and I think it was one of your latest songs about staying together. We have been married for 43 years I salute you and God bless you and your wife and family. My Favorite Band & Rob Is My Favorite Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Performer & He Is Still Hot As Hell ! A+ Live Performers
Amen I 2nd that statement
Very very good. I didn’t want it to end.
The soundtrack of a lifetime. Thank you Rob Thomas🎉🎉🎉
A fascinating interview. Enjoyed listening to Rob Thomas speak from the heart about his history and music. A great modern music talent!
He looks great and very sensible man! :)
Yeah, Rob...
No one, but no one gets to take 3AM away from you!! This is part of you, your life, your history. Glad that went to the mat for that amazing song!! It's a heart-wrenching song, but soooo meaningful, soooo powerful.

I went to his concert about 20 yrs ago and it was by far one of the best concerts I have been to.
I saw Matchbox 20 w/ Alanis Morrisett years ago in NFK, VA. It was the best concert!!
This guy is literally the reason I love to perform. 3am was one of the first songs I ever learned how to play and I natually took on the Rob Thomas style of singing. In turn I became comfortable with the sound of my own singing voice as I used to hate how I sound.
Love matchbox 20 and rob is an amazing singer and wish him nothing but success🇨🇦❤️👍
Fantastic interview! Matchbox has just finished touring Australia and New Zealand! They were fabulous I could say I’ve lost count of the mb20 and RT concerts but it’s 12! Counting SWA shows. Ollie blends into the couch so well 🐶
I love to hear Rob's changes in views as we age. Definitely relate.
Apologies for the length.
30 minute mark:
In late Jan/early Feb of 1997, I heard “Long Day” on WZZO out of Allentown Pa. The first time I heard it, I was floored. Left an instant impact as a great rock tune. The most under-rated unappreciated
singer\songwriter ever!!! 💯
Love you Rob....💪🏾😎💪🏾
Thanks for interviewing one of MY FAV artists and doing it well! ❤ Have been on the Matchbox Train for 20 years❤
What an awesome story . Love your enthusiasm . You made lemonade from lemons . Everything in life is blessing it teaches us to grow and be ❤
8 minutes in and already brilliant. Staple band of my life since high school. Thanks for posting.
Rob is awesome!! Been a fan since the 90s!! Best live performer!!
Love Rob Thomas what a talented singer/song writer and he seems like a really nice guy. Thank you for this interview.
Rob Thomas is by far, in the top 3 of my favourite artists and I have brought many people on the journey. It’s some of those deep cuts that I so relate to. Great interview, thank you 😊
Huge fan of Rob Thomas and MB20. Creative genius and a brilliant writer.
Rob Thomas got it 💯💯✅ checkmate 🎉
I remember watching his wedding and he was crying…so sweet
Great interview. I think Rob described my childhood, young adult life talking about why he practiced music a lot.
Inspiring.

Wow! Rob looks amazing in his 50's. Oh, I love him and Matchbox in general. So #Smooth~~~
Always a FAN ❤ never leave a song playing on the radio in the car 🥰🔥🎶
I enjoyed learning this interview there were things about Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty that I didn't know. I just enjoyed the music. And now I kind of get where some of the music came from.
Rob Thomas so proud of you so so proud of you
Thanks for this interview , its so good to get the back story behind the inspiration some of those songs I love so much and also Rob's story to success.
Just seen matchbox 20 in Melbourne, Australia 2 weeks ago. Loved every bit of the night, Goo Goo dolls toured with them which were so good too
I can’t imagine never wanting to hear both the band and Rob alone in his solo music. I was at the Nürburgring Rock am Ring summer 2000. I have seen you in many locations with the band and solo. He is a humble person which honestly makes him even better as a person.
Fantastic interview. Guy has great questions. Appreciate this interview.
Great interview! Long time fan of both Rob and Matchbox. Loved the trail of thought through the career path. ❤

Loved you all along, a little lyric from another Orlando band.

Holy Crap! He spoke my life lol 😆 didn't realize how much we had in common WOW! Must have just been a generational thing or something.

WO! Discovery ROB THOMAS..
You helped us in our life's family thank you I don't know how you do it but you got it whut ever Jesus Christ God gives you is amazing on top of it
Damn he has aged well.
Absolutely, he likes 40 and a good looking 40.
Coltrane was in a small railroad tobacco market town in NC, this reminded me.
Great interview, thank you..
Hi Guy, I would have liked to hear his inspiration for writing "Push". The underlying story and details of the making of that song. I really loved that song.
This was really good.
Rob Thomas met Marisol in Montreal in 1998 and they got engaged in October 1998.
They got married in October 2, 1999 because they were on Instyle Celebrity Weddings on ABC.
Rob needs to write a biography.
Great interview
When Rob shares the magical parts, this interviewer misses them. He hunts for why Rob can write from a “how to” linear processor mind. Artists get this all of the time.
