This is by far. the best Disney live action remakes Lily James is charming in the lead as for the rest of the cast are great, Kenneth Branagh did an excellent job of telling the story with a few new things that helped it zip along.

I like this movie. I saw it in theaters. I can't say that about many of the live action Disney movies. I saw this one, Beauty and The Beast, and The Little Mermaid, Cruella, and Dumbo. The Little Mermaid and Cruella have been my favorite so far. I had no desire to see The Lion King, The Jungle Book

I had that question about the shoes too!! Why do they stck around? After spending an embarassing amount of time thinking about it, I realized that in this version, the Slippers are the only things the Fairy Godmother makes FROM SCRATCH (Cinderella takes off her old slippers and the glass ones get magicked onto bare feet)!! Everything else is transformed from one state to another. So when things revert to what they were, the slippers never were anything else, so they stick around. Ta-da!! 😁
In the animation the shoes are part of the big magic trick,. But when they stick around after, Cinderella takes the one she still has and adresses a "thank you" to an invisible Fairy Godmother - I always just took that as them being a gift she got to keep 😇

Fun fact about the glass slipper: the tale is originally French, and a theory is that at first the shoes were made of “vaire”, a type of leather/fur, but it is pronounced the same way as “verre”, glass. So through oral storytelling the original meaning has been lost

This movie always makes me emotional because I don’t understand people who are cruel to the most vulnerable. But it also shows me the kind of hope that my students must’ve developed when they chose courage and kindness rather than fearful and cynical.

This is the movie that made me fall in love with Lily James. She is such a talented actress and so underrated, in my opinion. I’ve never seen her give a bad performance. And this? The way she walks the line between a real person and a fairy tale character is so well done. She’s never too real to be from a fairy tale, but never too much a fairy tale character to be unbelievable. Please watch more of her work. She, Richard Madden, and Derek Jacobi worked so well with Kenneth Branagh that he cast them in his stage adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, which is my favorite. This is Disney’s best live action remake and I think the Princess ones have lost their tactile feeling that this has, even though I like them (look at the lighting in the Cate Blanchett attic moment compared to the other remakes). And nothing has outdone Cinderella’s dress and its thousands of Swarovski crystals. God, I love this movie so much. Also, fully believe that the glass slipper only fits Ella, because it was magically formed around the contours of her foot. It’s like a fingerprint.

The thing is, what I love about how they write lady tremaine is not because she's balanced. This is the first time where I understood a character but still hates them to the core. They are not misunderstood but they are the product of their experiences. Aside from that, you'll be able to contrast cinderella's grief to the stepmother and how they cope up with each other's grief. This is a very well written(revised) villain character.

  • @Heida77
    @Heida77 2 месяца назад +16

    Behind the scenes:
The ball gown was made with more than a dozen fine layers of fabric, a corset and a petticoat. 9 versions of the gown were designed, each with more than 270 yards of fabric and 10,000 crystals placed one-by-one. It took 18 tailors and 500 hours to make each dress. Additionally, it took 16 people and 550 hours to complete the silk-organza, hand-painted wedding dress. When the crew were photographing Lily James in the dress she stood too close to an electric heater and it caught on fire. The top layer had to be redone because only one wedding dress was created due to time and budget constraints. Also, Lily James said that the iconic glass slippers actually didn't fit her, so instead they were added into the film via CGI.
There was much controversy over whether Lily James' waist was photoshopped or if CGI was used, since it seemed to be impossibly thin. But her waist was already naturally smaller and for every dress she had to wear a corset, even during the dance, which made her waist look unnaturally thin.
When in costume, the tight pants made Richard Madden's bulge stick out. As this film is supposed to be family friendly, several methods were used to try and hide his genitalia such as having him try on several jock straps. One of the straps was apparently so tight that he actually teared up in pain. And I'm sure the lighting helped but his eyes really are insanely blue!
Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter had an affair in the 90s while he was still married to Emma Thompson (who was also in Harry Potter). The "I'm your Hairy Dogfather" line is no doubt an intentional reference to Sirius Black (hairy dog/Harry's godfather).
Emma Watson was in talks to star as Cinderella but a deal could not be worked out with Disney. She eventually got her chance to star as a Disney princess when she was cast as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Also, Lily James originally auditioned for the role of Anastasia (one of the stepsisters) before being cast as Cinderella.
Cate Blanchett revealed a moment in which she didn't feel in character as Lady Tremaine was the ballroom scene, the reason being she wanted to cry because it was so beautiful.
When Kit wraps his hand around Cinderella's waist before the dance, she briefly gasps. This was a real reaction from Lily James as she was nervous and excited to start the scene.
The reactions from the ball guests watching Cinderella and Kit dance were real because the extras were not present to watch the actors during rehearsals.
Lastly, in the ballroom dance, many of the dress designs are based on the dresses of various Disney princesses: Belle, Aurora, Snow White, Mulan, Ariel and Tiana (The Princess and the Frog).

My other two favorite Cinderella's would be "Ever After" that doesn't have any magic involved besides love, and then "The Slipper and the Rose" which not only has a great storyline and cast (there are consequences for staying after midnight), but it also is a musical and has some great singers, including a very young Richard Chamberlain who plays the prince. The year after this film was released, Kenneth Branagh did a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Garrick Theatre in London with Richard Madden and Lily James in the title roles, and Derek Jacobi as an older Mercutio. It was set in a Fellini-esque 1950s Italy and filmed in black and white for cinemas. Really beautifully done and their chemistry is rumoured to be what inspired Branagh to mount the production in the first place. Wish it was available to stream somewhere because it was really lovely to see them all together again.

I love the Cinderella stories where she meets the Prince before the Ball and he knows her by sight, like here and in "Ever After". ❤ The 1955 "The Glass Slipper" had this too - he even knew what her name was and where she lived.
I always thought that the glass slippers retained some of their magic after the ball, and would shrink or grow as necessary, so they would not fit anyone other than Cinderella. It never made sense to me that no other woman in the kingdom shared her shoe size.

  • @enyamoore7929
    @enyamoore7929 Месяц назад +2

30:37 We finally have a reason for why the shoes don’t disappear! Fairy Godmother said “And all will return to what it was” meaning anything that was transformed from already existing materials will turn back at midnight. HOWEVER, the glass slippers were made entirely out of thin air, meaning there’s nothing for them to return to when the clock strikes midnight
Also, Lily James got some flack for wearing a corset, but there are a few things to consider in her decision. 1) Corsets were a norm for. The time, and tight lacing is very uncommon. They were meant to act like an older version of bras. 2) Wearing a corset was meant to emphasize that Cinderella has been malnourished for an extended period of time. 3) Apparently Cinderella’s dress took 3 MILES of fabric to make! All that fabric forms a sort of optical illusion that her waist is much smaller than it really is.

Excellent reaction - Kenneth Branagh should be given a studio to adapt legends and fairy tales for modern audiences - he rose to prominence by popularizing Shakespeare for the 90s; this likely landed him the gig of adapting Thor; think how easily that could have crashed, leaving Iron Man stranded as a successful fluke; it was Thor's success that truly launched the MCU - Branagh was also the one who cast Hemsworth as Thor and Hiddleston as Loki; he's maybe the best director at mining such material - this Cinderella may be the best live-action fairy tale played straight
So, just w Thor and Loki, Branagh w his uncanny casting instinct is bringing out rising new talent to shine - he modeled Thor's drama on Henry IV, and he knows how to invest his pretty leading heroes w substance - I agree about wanting to see him collaborating w Blanchett - the way he positions her in the film, so that her force and complexity aren't just standing up there on the screen, but they're channeled deep into the film's dramatic meaning
The fairy tale has proved very fruitful material for the cinema - from Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast to 1948 Red Shoes to the 1957 Soviet Snow Queen to Svankmayer's Alice - and Disney classics like Snow White, Pinocchio, and Sleeping Beauty - and there's another delightful version of Cinderella starring Leslie Caron - but, aside from the animators and the Surrealists, IMO Branagh's the one w the best track record for this
If Potter and Burton is all you've seen of Helena Bonham Carter, then check out her early work w Merchant Ivory; she was one of the leading ladies of period drama, initially immaculate and precarious, before finding her taste for darkness in Fight Club and Wings of the Dove

@36:26 - Actually! The slipper is real and made of crystal! No CGI. "In the 2015 live-action film, the slippers were made from Swarovski crystal in three separate parts (toe box with the butterfly, vamp & heel) joined together, because costume designer Sandy Powell later found out that glass doesn't sparkle, and they wanted the slippers to sparkle."

Only the slippers used for props were real. Lily never wore them. She wore gray leather high heels that they CGd the crystal slippers on.

I really enjoyed this Cinderella. Especially when I ❤❤ Helena Bonham Carter. My favorite versions are Ever After with Drew Barrymore as Cinderella and Anjelica Huston as the Fairy Godmother.
It’s a lil different from the traditional. Depicting it as the true story of Cinderella had she been a real person. It’s a beautiful take.
Also Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella with Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother. It’s high energy, vibrant, got the best songs and obviously the singing in it is Superb.❤

My nieces love everything having to do with Cinderella, the movies, stage plays, and cosplay. Their parents eventually took them to Disney World during Christmas vacation where they got to interact with one of the staff workers who was dressed as Cinderella. According to my nieces, the girl dressed up as Cinderella was so stunning that their mom (my sister) started mumbling insults upon seeing the girl. One of my nieces asked her mom to chill and her mom responded, "I'm treating Cinderella like she is in the story."

So this is what a cinematic live-action fairy tale movie looks and feels like. It's absolutely amazing. I feel like I just watched a 90s animated musical, which is ironic because this is neither of those three things, but the feeling is there.

Got to what you guys as you watched Cinderella. I love that film and I love the way you guys dialogue and put the movie. just the right touch of an annotation
I agree with everything you guys said about the film. The very, very best live action fairytale ever seen everything about. It was perfect.
However, you guys said that you wished you’ve gotten to see the fairy godmother again, but if you’d watched a little bit longer in the upper left-hand corner of the screen of the sky in the sky was a materialization of the form of the fairy godmother in the clouds, raving her magic wand . And I think she was singing, started, singing the song from the animated godmother song from the animated film and that one and that was followed immediately by lavender blue Dilly Dilly Dilly, the lavender green song that Cinderella was singing so it pays to sometimes the pace to watch the movie to the end to the very end anyway thanks again for a great program great annotation Great conversation. I look forward to seeing you guys again.
