  • Alberta Premium is made by Alberta Distillers Ltd. located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This is a 100% rye whisky bottled at cask strength of an astounding 65.1% ABV. Declared by Jim Murray, in his Whisky Bible to be the best whisky of the year. Let's see if it actually is.

    I never bought any Whisky Bible publication. I went out and bought two bottles of this whisky as soon as it was available, and made a video about it like I always do when I open a bottle for the first time, so as to give my first impression. But I did that because I'm an Alberta Premium fan, and have been waiting a long time for older and stronger Alberta Premium. When I first opened the bottle, I liked it but knew that it was missing something, that there was more potential in it than what I was tasting. It needed a few weeks to really open up, and now that it's three or four months later the whisky is just about at its peak. This is very good whisky whatever Jim Murray says or doesn't say. I kinda wish he didn't choose this whisky because now I won't be able to get more when my backup bottle goes dry...

    Well done! I would go further. By not visiting the distillery you are more well equipped to evaluate a spirit in that you are unbiased by any experiential charm or salesmanship. I like this channel. Hope you keep it going.

    I never read Jim Murray’s “Bible” because I’d see other sources report his picks and I’d say, “Really?” I recently learned about the controversy you referenced, and his specific language has had me asking, “Why?” It’s supposed to be a book about whisky, not Jim’s sex life. But coming from show business, I’ve definitely had to evolve. As a music journalist, as an event promoter, some of the ways I talked to and about women are embarrassing in retrospect. Hell, I objectified men if I thought my audience would take the bait. But yes, in order to evolve, we have to acknowledge the need to do so, and Jim’s just going on the defensive. Been there, done that, regretted it!
    I’d probably enjoy this whisky if I could find it! I used to enjoy Alberta Rye Dark Batch (Dark Horse in Canada), but that’s disappeared.
    I agree that Scotch whisky is overrun with snobbery and that whisky should be inclusive. After all, drinking is one thing which still brings people together.

    This sounds intense :) We were lucky that a Canadian subscriber send us a bottle of the original, which we cannot get here in Denmark. This sounds better.
    The whisky bible is weirdly influential. We recently saw a danish distillery get a whisky scored very high. The next day everything was sold out. Strange.

      Jim Murray, up to this point, has been a huge influencer of sales of a whisky he gives high marks to. It will be interesting to see if that remains the case going forward.

    Do you think it’s the same product as an uncut standard AP? Or did they do something special for this release? The standard release at 40% is only $20 so, a cask strength version should only cost $30 to $35......

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  3 года назад

      They did do something far above the standard Alberta Premium. This is a good whisky that is heads and shoulders above a great many Canadian whiskies. It is a tour de force of rye. Definitely worth $62 I paid.

    I need to find this one. Last time he declared A Crown Royal (Some Harvest etc) the #1 in the world, there were line ups for it and the funny thing is it was nothing special. Then again I don't know as much about whiskies other than drinking and feeling good. 😜

      Ya, agree. Northern Harvest Rye was average at best. That was a shocking and undeserved accolade. I think other ones he’s been much more on point with. The question I have is, is he taking price into comparison when he chooses for this category? Most of his picks have been affordable.

    I’ve never actually bought Murray’s books, but for many years used to look forward to seeing what he would select as his whisky of the year. That all came to an end with his selection of Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye which was an easy sipper, widely available in my area, and priced at less than $20, but hugely disappointing. I don’t particularly like rye whiskies so probably won’t buy the Alberta Premium Rye even though I have liked some of their other releases like the Dark Horse.

    The beginning was a bit disconcerting and the feeling runs through the whole review. I don’t think taking a moral high ground on some offensive language nitpicked out of a book by feminists was a good move. They did it to punish him for his opinions. This is moral authoritarianism whether what he said was agreeable or not.
    Regardless of all that, i like your review style and find your reviews interesting and useful, thanks.

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  3 года назад

      I guess I disagree.
      Likening women to whisky in the vulgar way Jim Murray can't be accpepted in written whisky appreciation without comment for fear of being a part of 'cancel culture' or a pawn of the left. I think some things in this world are wrong and need to be called out.

    • @kalon_9071
      @kalon_9071 3 года назад +1

      I don’t mean to align you with the far left, but i do think they have a lot to do with it.
      Personally, I’ve said offensive things in my life, so I wouldn’t look down on anyone else who has, in principle regardless of the context. Anything else would be hypocritical and without merit in my view. Although you might make allowances for offence given with intent to harm, which I don’t think his was. I don’t think scolding someone without looking at the person as a whole or looking at ourselves for reference is legitimate. The chances are he’s at some point in his life, just like most people, done some good, and i don’t think his detractors take that into account. In fact, I don’t think they would want to.

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  3 года назад

      @@kalon_9071 We all say offensive stuff maybe in jest or in anger, but with this guy, he puts it in writing. It’s locker room talk, not what belongs in a book though I would defend his right to publish such a book.
      I guess I wish things were more civilized when men were gentlemen and knew better than write in such a poor manner.

      @@JasonDebly We can certainly agree on that. Your videos are much closer to the ideal.
      And by the way, i look forward to trying some of your recommendations, you’ve gotten me to understand why it’s actually worth while spending good money on a bottle, or rather, an experience. That is, being someone who’s never really considered whiskey, or cognac for that matter in that way.
      To begin with, I think a bottle of Talisker 10 is on the horizon.
