I am enjoying your Karmann Ghia videos. That was the first car I learned to drive at 10 years old. My dad bought a 1957 model in Germany when he was stationed there. Just after the war. The German owner had put a Porsche 356 engine in it. Porsche 356 seats. In the place they normally have a clock, he put the Tachometer. The car had an emergency tank that you activated with a little lever under the dash to get you home. So it was really a Porsche 356 in Ghia clothes. We brought it back to the USA from Germany to El Paso. Unfortunately, my Dad sold it in 1968. Wish I had it now. It was really neat.
my sister had a black ghia (66) she got it as high school graduation gift in about 68. i converted the stock motor to a 1600 cc. and restored it as a daily driver for her husband. very cool segment. thanks Mustie1 its a Mustie1 all rite.
My 71' Bug had a mouse nest in the rear seat that was repeatedly removed and put back during a 2 month long rebuild much like your project. It wasn't until the final victory ride after a full engine rebuild and replacing about everything you are replacing, did I find them when one of my girlfriends stepped on one during the test drive. But that was 1975. Great memories brought back by your videos! Thanks Mustie1!
I was sitting at home feeling sorry for myself recovering from surgery and up pops a Mustie 1 video. That is sooo much better than what the Dr ordered! Thanks yet again Mustie
What a great project this is, really enjoying this over here in the UK. When you asked, "Shall we start her up?..." can just imagine everyone nodding and saying , "Hell yes!" Keep up the good work fella!
Mustie, I enjoy 99% of your mechano-adventures, but I'm especially happy to see you get onto a project that's gonna require some work but will turn into a neat little runabout that you'll certainly enjoy about 5000 times better than some dirtbag lawnmower. Thanks for taking us along!
Okay ads are getting silly first ad that popped up was the entire 22 minute first episode of Miracle Workers.... What we got show-mercials now. Just crazy, great stuff as always Mustie!
Just to let you know, The next time you park a car or anything else just put some dryer sheets in them. Don,t know why but mice wont go anywhere near it. I parked 2 cars and my boat in my pole barn, put a couple of sheets in each one. Not one mouse or anything else for that matter even went in the barn! Learned this from the fella next door.
Mustie ! that Ghia is a sweetheart , if your counting votes PLEASE keep the whitewalls ---those and the white roof and that gorgeous red body really make that car !
I have to say that Mustie 1 is an amazing engineer. This channel is "ALWAYS" brilliant. I have never watched a video I did not like. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us Mustie. :D
Nice work with the mouse! Good sound of the engine in that car. Remember me of my first car a VW back in 1968. It was a 1960 model with 34 hp engine. It has a sunroof and was very nice.
That brings back memories when I used to have my Volkswagen and used to get Squirrely and I blow a belt looks familiar have a good day enjoy watching the vlogs
Just wanted to say hey, but I just noticed something, Mustie1 has 244,000 subscribers, that is nearly one quarter million. I get a lot of encouragement from watching Darren do his magic. So far I have revived three chainsaws and two weedwackers as he calls them. And I'm a big VW fan as I used to own a VW shop. Anyone that's taken drops of oil in the eye from adjusting valves or changing oil will enjoy Mustie's channel. Check out this very video, published on Feb 6 and today here is 11 a.m. and it has 75,000 views plus. I see I am not alone. Parts of this video were disgusting, yes, mask and glove up and get it gone. Bye bye headliner, no saving that. And I never knew mice could travel up the air channels that support the roof. Painting to help seal the surfaces, makes great sense. I learn stuff every video. How many of you have had the thought, "I am Mustie?" Ha ha, I've actually said it to a few family members. Cheers, today we are vacuuming and mopping floors. But I'm really thinking about that 70's Poulan in the garage and UPS delivered the carb kit, woohoo. It's gonna be fun.
thanks again for the help with my windshield. Evicting mice is my least favorite part of old cars. great job Sir. HUGE THUMBS UP. The 2387cc was a lot of fun
Man oh man, I swear I could smell that interior through the video! Had thoughts that maybe you could wash that headliner at 1st, but the more you got into it I could see it was a 'trash' item. Good job on that tightening up of the E-brake linkage, and the painting of the interior as well. Really good how that little motor you resuscitated for that Ghia is now running quite well. Had doubts when I seen that substance "formerly known as oil" inside it, but a testament to those bug motors how well it came back with some love.
Here is where I am with my truck. Got lichens (the ones that grow on trees) growing above me on my headliner. Also only my gas and speedo work.....lol. It looks like you got that mouse problem doctored up! Cleaning up nice! 👍🏻
The Mice Hotel Royal they have been naughty very naughty Mustie!!!; ) Nice work for sure!!!, Thanks for helping Brian with the Windshield Nice!!, Brian layed rubber down huh!!!
I used to make head liners for cars back in my upholstery days. You need to save the old pieces CAREFULLY to make a pattern. Too many guys just RIP the old ones out then expect us to magically fart a new head liner that fits. If you want a good fitting restored head liner, leave the thing in and let the guy who is restoring it take it out. Most of the head liners I worked with were falling down from tobacco smoke. It causes the glue to crystalize and fall off. Convertable tops were much harder but after a while I figured it out. Sewing the rear window panel in was always a treat. Lots of fun times! I do remember the rodent ridden cars. Usually the wiring was chewed up if it had a dome light. Rear decks were ALWAYS full of nests. Wouldnt white paint make the interior brighter than black paint?
I’ve found that watching Mustie for a loooong time, he can and will fix whatever is necessary. I call him Teach and that he is.. Long live Devon the teach AKA Mustie 1
We always used alfalfa bales to absorb odor. We would used the method in vehicles that would be future projects. Worked well for us. Learned the method from an old timer that restored cars.
I had a mouse chew a small hole through the HP fuel line on my 911. Fuel line was $197, $3,800 in labor to drop the entire front end to replace said line. Asked the folks what they recommend and dad said to cut up a dish sponge in 1 inch squares, soak in peppermint oil and zip tie them in various places (including around the engine compartment and under the car).
Absolutely LOVE your vids - really enjoy watching you work and listening to you share your process & the knowledge you impart to us!! Keep 'em comin' please!! Cheers!!
The heating system on these is a big weakness. Had a vw westfalia camper that the tubes rusted out and you’d get exhaust fumes inside the cabin. Finally just pulled them out and carried blankets for my self and passengers! But I loved that old camper and a had lot of fun back in the day with it!
I'm from Poland, I love your videos (especially with engines). I really enjoy watching someone repairing cars and other things :) Last year I have repaired bodywork of my Seat Toledo (it's based on VW Rabbit/Jetta MK2 and MK3, but it's liftback ;) ) and probably this summer I'll start repairing VW Scirocco MK1 (sitting about 15-20 years in shed) or Lada 2103 (it spent about 12 years outdoors). One problem with this cars is (except they are old, rusted, not started long time) that they aren't registered. Even if I fix them, I probably can't get license plates for them on normal way, but there is something as "historic vehicle". If car has more than 25 years and it isn't produced for more than 15 years and most of parts are original (car left factory with that type of part, f.e. engine) it can have special license plates, but it becomes "monument" and cannot be modified. Should I start fixing one of the cars or should I leave them as they are because it will be waste of money and time?
One thing I would check is for mouse colonies up in the dash especially any tubing. If the smell still persists, get hold of an industrial ozone generator and put that in the car for a few hours. That will sort it out.
Rubbered in windows are great since you can remove and reinstall them without any special sealers. To remove easier use a product called releaseall or something that actually contains an oil. WD 40 doesnt work. to install clean rubber really well with real thinners, sometimes marked as Lacquer thinners. Pretty much if a white rag comes off black its not clean yet. Clean window glass with Windex, no subs to that product. Install by wetting rubber down with windex to act as lubricant. leave dry clean off window after. Wont leak. You add any sealants to a rubbered in window and guaranteed it will leak every single time! Mustie1 Fantastic works just as well for neutralizing mouse smell. Spray scrub and your done. Keep old headliner if possible for bar locations. Most upholstery shops can make up a cheap headliner for you as long as they have the old one, and some measurements for a pattern. Might want to wash it down with some old solvent though so it dont smell as bad.
I've always liked ghias. This one keeps getting better and better. That 200hp bug engine would be epic in this ghia, but for drivebility, maybe 150 or 175 might be enough. lol. That is a really nice car, I love it. The red, with the white roof, It just needs those big white walls and stock hubcaps. It does it for me. It just works.
Ahhhh, it is such a pleasure starting my morning with a new video from Mustie1. I have learned so much from your channel. Thank you! You should have a million subs!
After the source of the smell is cleaned up. You could use an air purifier / ozone generator inside the vehicle. Just air the ozone out of it before entering the vehicle afterwards. Ive used one in my garage, and other parts of the house. Works great. Just be sure its an unoccupied space.
i agree...i bought a motorcycle once that had a slight mouse smell to it and after i sold it twenty years later when i sold it i could still smell it when it started
@@philtripe as long as as the absorbant parts are tossed and the rest is sealed it should be ok but yeah sometimes it's hard to get on every nook and cranny.
Glad you got the Ghia clean!! Love what you have done with it. Hey here is a great video idea for the spring/summer...How about building a front engine bug? That would be awesome!!
I had a '68 bug that had the same headliner issues. That "padding" from the liner was carpet padding used as noise damping. Worked great as insulation in the Colorado winters, too.
Arm & Hammer Mountain Rain Carpet Oder Eliminator It's a powder. Get it at the grocery store. Sprinkle it on, wait, vacuum. I use it on everything. Great stuff
I had a 67 VW that was cold as hell. At one time J C Whitney used to sell a gas burner that would toast you right out of the car. Dangerous as hell but it kept you warm.. In Maine it was almost a must have when I was living up there.
Every Ghia was hand built, just like a 356 Porsche. If you can find it, there is a VW brochure that is committed to Ghia, and how they are built. Take special note to the hammer hanging from every workers belt.
if you are having a lucky day you can lube that window seal with silicone and slide it in from the end. if it is clean and the seal is not crusty should be a quick job. it does not always work on old crusty stuff but its worth a try. loving the ghia series
An ozone generator shut up in the car for a while will get rid of most smells and I think it kills bacteria too. One of the benefits of using an ozone generator is that it reaches areas you couldn't normally reach.
Thanks for another great video. I've been binge watching your old bike builds. You have one of the best channels on youtube. Any Q&A / shop update videos coming up?
Sorry you guys but a VW bug with good heater boxes and all standard parts working provides plenty of heat. My wife can confirm that I once melted a set of gum sole shoes on the driver side floor heat vent! True! Lived in Mass at the time and the defrost could take a while to work well, buy it did in many water cooled cars also. A good BUG MAN can get you good heat - you have to pay to replace rusted out bits however.
Quick tip - got a stench you really don't want to smell like mouse pee or the bath and body or candle store ?? Apply a dab of vicks-vapo-rub under your nose. Used it a lot as a medic and while Christmas shopping...
Yuck, HATE mouse mess with a passion! Glad there was not too much damage from the urine, as it is horribly corrosive stuff. I am one who is glad there is not Smell-O-Vision.
Good job. Don't forget to take measurements of the old headliner so it can be duplicated where the rods go. I would also paint the rest of the floor up front.
I believe he said he is not fixing the headliner. There was a mention of putting something on there, but the true upholstery will be left to the next guy.
Looks like the next addition to the Mustie stable is a grey 63 sun roof, the same color and year I had. Fabulous little car, one of VW's best IMO. The accordion sunroof should have never been changed.
Good stuff Bud!! Nothing worse than looking at a beautifully restored Classic on a hot Summer day and smell mouse piss reeking outta it eh!!☺

Good job. Don't forget to take measurements of the old headliner so it can be duplicated where the rods go. I would also paint the rest of the floor up front.
I believe he said he is not fixing the headliner. There was a mention of putting something on there, but the true upholstery will be left to the next guy.
Haha, rat-piss. I bet it does smell a lot better! New/old engine seems reliable! Good score. Love your channel. Thanks!!
Again thank you for bringing up videos more often.
this would make a good scary movie, as mustie reaches in, something grabs his hand and pulls him in
Looks like the next addition to the Mustie stable is a grey 63 sun roof, the same color and year I had. Fabulous little car, one of VW's best IMO. The accordion sunroof should have never been changed.
Crikey almost a mouse commune in there bro. Great video and loved the sound of the carbs on the black 67. ATB
Man i cant help but have the "I smell poop" look the whole time you pull that head liner apart. Those seats seem to be in really good shape though 🐭
paint the floorpans too
cool cool...cleaning it inside and out!
Keep em coming!
I'm thankful I don't have the bandwidth to get the smell. lol
Hey Mustie you and your new car have matching tops! ;)
5 mins in and car already has "New Car Smell" lol cant waite to see you tackle that rear quarter panel.
Im still waiting on you van/boom truck. Going to be neat what you do to it. Keep up the video's buddy
