Sad Subaru Story

  • This is a sad story involving a Subaru and an unfortunate set of circumstances. I got into vehicle repair because I enjoyed helping people. Helping folks in their time of need so to speak. I have to believe most techs share my sentiments however when does helping cross the line and become hosing? Corporate policy can shape the way certain businesses operate but when does the line get blurred and greed impact ones ethical conduct? Ill let you decide. As for me, I sleep well at night.

Hey Tim, good seeing you again! It's been awhile. The dishonesty and cruel people are getting worse I believe. Thankfully there's a few trustworthy folks like yourself left.

I went to a tire shop to get a puncture repaired today. They said that as there is only 3 mm left its illegal to repair and went on to try and sell 4 new tyres. (the front 2 have the starting signs of cracking). The next shop just fixed it...

Pretty hard to defend that. That's completely opposite to my local Subaru dealer. I ask a few questions and they back off completely and deliver quality care. Service writers are experts in detecting weakness, it's a sad story when the encouragement of their boss to up-sell leads to embarrassing advice. Perhaps they were planning to get that approved as an insurance claim for damage to the vehicle?

I love asking service writers questions haha. They usually look at me like I have three heads and try to get me out of the desk area. 95% of them know nothing about cars and rely on their "people skills" aka, "detecting weakness."

Probably has more to do with a particular tech or service writer than anything else. Seems easy enough to find plenty of legitimate problems with Subarus to keep most shops busy. Haha. Thanks for following!

Subaru dealerships are hit or miss. Some are really good, others are your typical BS dealership. That applies to their vehicles as well. A family member of mine custom ordered a Forester with a manual transmission and leather, and the custom order was a lemon from day 1

How some of the service people at these dealerships sleep at night, is beyond me. Thanks for telling us this story. Most people could save themselves hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the course of their vehicle’s lifetimes, by learning some of the basics of car maintenance, or at least how to “eyeball” brake pads and rotors for thickness. Good on you sir for being one of the mechanics we all hope we hook up with at some point. Cheers!

You have to be some special kind of low life to leave someone stranded in the wild during winter conditions!

Used to tell my service manager at the Toyota dealership years ago you might screw a customer once and maybe twice if you're lucky. But once they figure it out they're never coming back. I asked wouldn't you rather have a lifetime customer. But they don't think anyone else can do what they do and keep ripping people off. There's a reason they're called stealerships!!

If your brakes are at 80% the dealer will tell you they are dangerously worn.
