I have to brag: I got to see this live when I was a teen. We got tickets late, so I had to sit alone in row 4. This was my first ever Gilbert & Sullivan exposure, and I was ELECTRIFIED. Subsequently I became a G&S addict. :) What a fantastic production! And this is my favorite song of the entire show, too.
Jealous. I have been watching this since having a VHS copy off an A&E airing from the mid-80's. Must've watched 100 times.
+kijugently I saw this production when I was a teen also ! Love it so much. My favorite G & S show. Check out the Eric Idle version. Soooooo funny
My 5th grade pageant we did the Mikado, no joke, we did an abridged version of the show, tung twisters and all
When I was a teen, I got to perform with Erik Donkin (Koko) onstage in A Christmas Carol….such a genuinely kind man and a great performer
Lucky!!
I actually ran into Richard McMillan today! What a lovely man!
This is the best performance of the Mikado ever. I sat through this entire VHS video when I was just 6! If only the actors could know how much joy this has brought over the years!
I have seen many versions of the The Mikado but this one beats them all with Cast, Costumes, Canadian Content and Characterizations.
Mcmillan as Poo-Bah is hilarious!
OMG, Allen Stewart Coates (Pish Tush) is MY dad.
Imagine writing musicals where all the songs are tongue twisters
Gilbert and Sullivan’s says “hold my beer”
The brilliance of Sulivan's melodic inspiration allied to Gilbert;s witty word-play never palls. What
better definition of theatrical immortality.
I had the privelledge of playing Ko-Ko. It's such a great role. Probably one of the best male roles written for stage.
Stunning performance. To maintain that clarity and diction at that pace... Something all performers should aspire too.
Wonderful!
I fell madly in love with Richard McMillan when I discovered this last Summer!
Yes, I know ... tragically, too late ... not to mention wildly inappropriate in the very first place!
But still, ... there you have it!
They are all splendid, of course, and I love them all!
💘
It's just so good. I don't think I could ever get sick of watching this.
Love G&S and have to agree this is the best ever. It is, or at least was available on DVD. I had the good fortune of seeing the Stratford performance live in Detroit back in the 80's. I have seen other G&S performed by Stratford as well but none had the genius of this one.
This is bonkers! I love it!
Too incredible. No words to describe the greatness of this piece of music. And these singers carried it off so wonderfully. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
I was lucky enough to get front row tickets for this twice at Stratford. It was beyond brilliant. The joy and exhilaration you would feel !!
I watched this when I was very young but I remembered it and it is honestly the best version I've ever seen. So well done.
One of the best Pooh-Bah's since Kenneth Sandford of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Co. I have this vid and it is wonderful...
I saw this at Stratford the summer of 1982. The senior choir performed this as their senior showcase in Nov. 1982. My parents saw The Mikado at The Lyric Opera House (Chicago) spring of 1983. My mother declared my high school performance the best of the three. I wasn't in the high school production, so there wasn't a bias. I love this production of The Mikado. Sadly, I don't really remember the senior production. I do remember watching the Stratford production at the Avon Theatre.
The "tall fella" is Richard McMillan, one of Canada's best character actors IMO. Although most of his work is on stage (ie. he was Scar in Toronto's premier production of THE LION KING, and he played Saruman in the stage musical version of LORD OF THE RINGS, he has appeared on television and films as well.
Wait, there's a Lord of the Rings MUSICAL?!!
@@archibaldwhitwerr1918 There was. There is a cast album with some terrific music.
RIP, Richard McMillan. Left us too soon.
Personally, I think it's funny how the guy who played Scar also played a character whose name sounds like a toddler trying to say Pumbaa.
The best version I have ever heared!
The Best Mikado ever!
Loved this since I was little....ah, such good memories!
Perfection! PERFECTION!!
So good
We saw them bring this performance to NYC in the 80's. Just brilliant, and FUNNY!
this is one of my favorites. ever.
The best I have ever heard!
Thank you SOOO much for posting this!! I have searched everywhere for this version, and I finally got in on Amazon. Thanks for putting it on here, I think this is the best version.
This is amazing
@gamgee87
I don't know. No disrespect to Eric Idle (God knows I love him) but this production overall has been the best I've watched. Saks and McMillan are incredible.
This was a wonderful rendition. They added Canadian content. It's too bad that we can't get our dear Justin on a big black block.
fantastic
I got to see this is in, I think, July of 1983 at the Avon in Stratford. 10 years old. I'd already seen the production that previous Christmas on CBC TV. I was so excited and was not disappointed. They modular scenery was very clever, the art direction inspired....and the cast were amazing.
Every time Pooh-Bah came on stage, the audience sat forward with a frisson of anticipation. Richard McMillan made the role for me....an all-time great performance for any G&S role. Bravo!
I wish they could have taken the Poo-Bah and Pish-Tush from this version and paired them with the KoKo from the 1966 film. If only 16 years didn't separate these great performances!
Rest in peace, Richard Macmillan, I just learned he has passed away.
Best performance I've seen.
RIP Richard McMillan. :(
Oh no really I never know :'(
I must say, this interpretation of Pooh-Bah is pretty unique - it's not often you seem him portrayed by a tall, skinny guy; I'm used to seeing him more portly, like Kenneth Sandford's portrayal, for example. He also kind of sounds like a character from _Cats_ (the West End musical, not the crappy 2019 film), which is definitely something different.
Saw this on TV with Groucho Marx when I was a kid! On the Bell Telephone Hour in 1960, I was 8!
Had this on video brilliant my favourite of all gand s
This version of The Mikado is by far the best version ever.
All other versions on RUclips are EPIC FAILURES.
This is the only one worth watching.
The best little soliloquy Gilbert ever wrote. I include in my reckoning the Policeman song.
i was actually at this performance, Allen Stewart-Coates is my Father!
He was as surprised as i was that these videos are on RUclips!
Thanks to those responsible for posting these!
Now, where can we get the entire show???
The full Mikado is on here!
Act 1: ruclips.net/video/jbpUzCFCy_8/видео.html
Act 2: ruclips.net/video/MK6y6n98O00/видео.html
I hope you somehow still receive word of these.
@@kbye2321 I do! And it's great, thank you!
Am I the only one to find that Pooh-Bah looks a lot like Pierre Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada at that time?
Pooh-Bah is a lot better than Trudeau. And he sings a lot better.
Performing "To sit in solemn silence" at speed with proper diction and intonation is a party trick I pull out to this day just because I can. Still working on Modern Major General, though.
@Minoushe15 Forget best Poo-bah, they actually have a Pish-tush!
I wish "I've got a little list" was posted as well!
It is!
It's like Christopher Lee and Tim Curry had a baby.
This is brilliant the tall fella is magnificent who is ha ?
Paw Dugan should totally do this version, if he ever gets around to this show.
The best Poo bah.
Good rendition..and the clothes are right for Japan, too!
@chrisstewart42 OMG RICHARD MCMILLAN IS MY DAD
Richard was an amazing talent, may he Rest In Peace.
@gamgee87 whoa dere that's my dad you're talking about
Cool.
ah yes, rehearsal vocal warmups
Nu pas ontdekt😔Blij mee, MamaNakku
Oh, and if so, was someone or something called Oberlin involved?
What do you mean, did you see one where they didn't???
STILL. NOT. FAST. ENOUGH.
It really doesn't matter.
@@jamesbrice3267 This particularly rapid unintelliglble patter
Isn't generally heard, and if it is, it doesn't matter! And that’s the point. Still not fast enough.
Thumbs up if the tall guy kinda scares you
I agree it was a great production, but I stil prefer the D'Oyly Carte.
