Great video, great advice! I would though also put Huawei in the higher classes as well. Their Katanas can go up to 1000$ and they are great. I consider myself lucky to own a custom Huawei in the just below 500$ range and it is a beautifuk blade with excellent fitings, Unfortuately it is alsmost impossible to get in contact with them. I would love to purchase another Katana from them.

Thanks, I would have but since they've been so hard to get ahold of and offer anything to buy higher end lately I chose not to at the time of posting the video. Yes I remember when they first came out the were very sought after by almost everyone on SBG Forum. It's sad to see they've had trouble following through with orders as of late.

Hey Dave, this is Jester from SBG. My opinion on the production market is that there's basically no option for customisation. I'd really like to see forges offering more choice for parts and fittings, like Regenyei does for their longsword range. Katanas are well covered by Longquan forges in that field (although their quality control in general tends to be quite poor) but same can't be said about Chinese jians for example. I'd also like to start see production katanas with more attention to details, especially for the tsuka: they tend to be quite beefy most of the times (Hanwei is a good example of overly fat tsukas). It would be great to see Hanwei, Cold Steel, Skyjiro and Dynasty Forge to offer products with a little level of customisation like the Ryujin line.

Yes I think that would be interesting too. And maybe if the customizations are offered by more reputable manufacturers they will be more consistent in fit and finish. An interesting idea for sure and definitely worth a Discussion Topic! Thing is with Chinese Swords I just don't see enough popularity and sales of them to warrant a customization option for them. Maybe I'm just out of focus on Chinese Sword sales and there is a market for it?

@@DynamoSwordChannel Jians are definitely not as popular as other swords but they are virtually impossible to customise. While for a katana you can find spare parts everywhere, for a jian you either don't find anything or you find a single option that will never fit as the size difference will be too big.

That's too bad but I could see that with how intricate their hilts are. Maybe have some pre set blades and a handful of different guards or pommels to choose from that have the same dimensions?

I used to think price was a mitigating factor in the quality of swords both western European style and Japanese styles (Other styles are not as prominent and therefore not really comparible to anything offered today), but it is not. Today prices are all over and one can find a well made piece for less than most would expect. I'm also speaking about the Japanese sword market as the western European swords are still somewhat priced for what you get though many manufacturers claim a price for their construction that is far too high for what they offer. Dark sword armory, cold steel and swords of Northshire are notorious for crazy mark ups for what is offered.
I own both expensive and cheap swords and have found more luck with cheaper ones than the expensive ones. The expensive ones just seem to have the price but not the construction. Nice talk.
After almost a decade of collecting and comparison I have dwindled my collection down to three swords: two katana and one European longsword.
One custom katana vault queen. Blade by Alex Zheng with semi general brass fittings but everything else done by me.
A Siwode katana bought on Amazon! For under 150$!!!! Distal taper on the blade, well done tsuka, full wrap ray skin, tapered saya, sharp out the box, I mean I was blown away!! Really a company to check out and won't feel bad spending a ton of money!!
And lastly an Angus Trim xvlll.b.7 fat bastard. It's amazing.
I do own a Honshu broadsword for fun. It's an excellent example of low end European swords and where it compares to a historically accurate sword.

Yea the market has a lot of options but it really depends on who you buy from to get the most value for your money. I think because the Japanese production market is so much larger you have more options but most of those options are the same Longquan forged swords being sold by various vendors who claim individuality on the face value of their sale page. This is why you'll find for example a RyanSword for $200 but the same sword on Northshire for $400. The European market is less saturated so its easier to tell who made what and where it came from. But at least with the European Market you know where the swords are coming from and have a good scale of what their worth even if some manufacturer/vendors are overpriced. With the Japanese production market it can be much more hit and miss and less honest on the front.
Nice collection, I'll have to check out that katana brand and see what I think. Of course Atrims are excellent swords especially the old Fat Bastard which has been getting praise for 20 years as a amazingly handling and cutting sword. Yea the Honshu are decent for the price if you like the tactical design of them. Their European style swords are much more historical looking than their Asian style swords.
