Idk how anyone could hate this song. It's brilliant. I've been listening to Abbey Road alot more lately and I think it's their best work. Hands down. I used to think Revolver, or Sgt Pepper. But man. Come together, something, Maceell Maxwells silver hammer, Here comes the sun, the Medley. Like Jesus christ. It's gotta be up there no matter what
HIStory In The Mix i luv that song to the point of actually wanting a silver hammer. Literally my dad took me to a hardware store, and we went to the hammer section, and my dad had to pull me and said "no, they dont have silver hammers" i was literally disappointed.
I love Maxwell silver hammer. the entire goffiness of it the lyrics are funny the hammer sound is funny as well. And the vocals are good it's an underrated song
- Alot of their songs were nonsensical meant only it seems to put a smile on your face and possibly make you laugh. They'll always be my favorite band. It's All Too Much, when you think of the tragedies associated with them. I've loved their music since I was 4 or 5.
"Maxwell's..." is definitely not on my Beatles' favorites list, but the stories surrounding it are hilarious. I'm surprised you didn't mention Paul's giggle on "Writing fifty times," when the other Beatles in the sound room flashed their behinds at Paul as he sang, "..so he stays BEHIND...," making him crack up. These guys must've been a blast to be around with in the studio.
I'm a late Beatles fan. I came around in 2010. I listened to all of their albums without learning of much of the negative critical reception. When I heard Maxwell's Silver Hammer for the first time, I freakin loved it. I thought it was one of those Beatles songs that's beloved for it's wacky storytelling, cheekiness, and overall darkly whimsical vibe. After hearing songs like Yellow Submarine, Octopus's Garden, Piggies, When I'm 64, and Rocky Raccoon, people would be a lot more open minded to a song like this. I was wrong. This song gets a lot of undeserved hate.
I love this song so much. No idea why people hate it, like… it has everything: upbeat arrangement, insane lyrics, the actual sound of a hammer (which kinda sounds cartoony too), Paul giggling, funny backing vocals, and a real fun bass line. I legit do not understand why it’s not more loved among Beatles’ fans. Also I loved your American Psycho intro there lol
Did you actually listen to the lyrics? "Back in school again, Maxwell plays the fool again, teacher gets annoyed" He wasn't sitting there with a bloody hammer which annoyed the teacher, (WTF?) He was PLAYING THE FOOL, causing a disturbance, and therefore annoying the teacher. :) LOL.
*"A cheerful little ditty about a serial killer.'* Yes. To me, that's what makes it so absurdly great. Heavy darkness turned light. What can be darker than a song about a charming serial killer, sung in a bouncy singalong way? 'MSH' is not your grandpa's 'Tom Dooley' that's for sure.
Michele & Water Falls: I've always been surprised at how many people didn't "Get" it :) Both of you analogies are perfect!! (a year late, but there ya go!!) :)
Mack the Knife is a serious song that clearly makes Mack the bad guy. "Slice slice Macky's silver switchblade Came down upon her throat Slice slice Macky's silver switchblade Made sure that she was croaked." Wouldn't that be offensive?
It's like an allegory for communism. Despite how it kills everyone who gets involved with it, there are some people bat shit crazy enough to keep thinking its a good idea.
They split when they realised they could never achieve the greatness of The Rutles. Not even in two lunchtimes. McCartney marrying Ziggy Stardust after Bob Dylan ran David Bowie over with Steve McQueen's motorcycle was the final straw. Then Ringo became famous playing Darth Vader in The Nun Who Feel to Earth, although Thomas the Tank Engine wore the costume and Keith Moon provided the voice. George Harrison ended up in a sit com playing an irate Indian hotel owner called Basil.
Paul likes to make stories up about his songs. It's his right to do so. More likely, it was inspired by Allen Klein. Mr. Klein used to hold a hammer as he reigned the Apple offices. And he'd wave it around as he fired people right and left in an environment of fear in the Apple offices. There are more than a few pictures of him and his famous hammer. And Paul being Paul,,likely used that as an inspiration for his cute song. Bang, bang Allen Klein's hammer came down, firing someone else. The Beatles laid low while their friends were unceremoniously let go. They kept quiet until Mr. Klein tried to fire Neil Aspinall who history has shown to be their most loyal team mate.
I'm quite sure MSH was written long before Klein was around. They were actually rehearsing it at Twickenham film studios during the beginning of the Let it Be/ Get Back project (as seen in the film) which was still before Klein . Now You Never Give Me your money is directly about Klein and Apple (and one of Paul's best songs)
Klein was a real piece of work from the sound of it. Lost them a lot of rights and money, from what I heard. There's a story that Linda Eastman's brother was using Klein's bathroom one day and noticed some suppositories on the counter, which he mentioned to the group by saying, "why, Allen, I thought you were already the perfect asshole."
What's with all the hate for this song? It's always been my favorite on the album, and it was the one that really drew me in to Abbey Road honestly. I think it's fucking brilliant.

This song is about a student named Maxwell Edison who commits murders with a hammer, with the lyrics disguised by an upbeat, catchy, and "childlike" sound
The recording of MWSH was the best thing in Let it Be (the movie). I just loved how they had an engineer sitting with his notes holding a hammer waiting near an anvil for his cue and... Bang Bang Maxwell. I wish I could have played the anvil on that track. I think what makes it so impressive is taking a common sound (metal hitting metal) and incorporating it into the song, compare this to "Chain Gang" which has a similar hook. When I got the 24-bit recordings of the 2009 remixes I had a friend that bought the mono album collection who was afraid to open them for value loss, I played MWSH to give him an idea of the recordings. When it bang banged he just got this smile on his face, there are a few places in the remasters with that effect on fans.
I once met Paul when I was programme director of Berlin's No.1 radio station and got the chance to chat with him about this song. in my highschool in Kiel/Germany our English-teacher "analysed" the lyrics with us and found strange interpretations in it. I shared his ideas with Paul, and he laughed out. He remarked, i should forget about that. the story about Maxwell was nothing but nonsense. Man, this was a hammer conversation! I keep loving Paul's sense of humour! ;-)
I always thought the silver hammer somehow represented the influence of a wealthy family preventing a young Reckless and violent man from facing the consequences of his horrible actions. I don't know why but this meaning seemed obvious to me from a very young age. Perhaps the concept of one being born with a silver spoon made me think this. I always thought of the song as a sort of warning to steer clear of such people.
Not only do I LOVE learning more about Beatles' songs in general, but I also really love the way they have clearly inspired your imaginative, innovative approach to the videos you create. Bravo!
Just a nice, upbeat song about a serial killer. It shouldn't work, but somehow it does. The line about "Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery" makes me think about what happened a few year later at the Manson trial; I picture them with X's cut into their foreheads.
Brilliant. I was listening to that song the other day cleaning my windows. It is very weird, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer came down on her head. Bang bang Maxwell's silver hammer made sure that she was dead." I didn't know what the others had thought about it. It seems a catchy little song, but it's so dark.

The summary of the song feels like someone describing a movie that you fell asleep in the first twenty minutes. I've heard the song so many times and I didn't realize 90% of that happened!
Dude I loved the Beatle bunch skit! You're production and acting is getting better each video and I love what you're doing! I was wondering if you could give any links to those "actual quotes" by the other Beatles. It would be interesting to hear where the quotes came from. Thanks and keep up the good work!

I subscribed as soon as i saw the "Being for the benefit of Mr.Kite" poster that inspired him to write that very song. I love the American psycho reference also, i love your Beatles and H3 videos. Keep it up dude
I’ve always liked this song. I think I really offended someone when I played it to them once. Love the mix of the jolly tune with the sinister story. Great video love the sketches
When I was 7 my dad let me bring in the pictures of The Beatles from his copy of the White Album to school. So I could use them for show and tell (I was a massive Beatles fan). My teacher was very impressed and said I could choose a song by The Beatles, and at the end of the day she would play it from the big screen. I was so excited and couldn't decide which song, I eventually chose Maxwell's Silver Hammer because I liked it a lot. She obviously didn't know it, because when it had finished playing, she was not very happy... 🤣🤣 ✌and ❤
Nice reference to American psycho Edit: btw I don't know why people hate the song I love it, the lycris are really good ,and the vocals are really good and the hammer part so perfect
This video is great! This song was also really fun to play on "The Beatles: Rock Band"; our nieces got a kick out of it because it's so bat-shit crazy. My wife also never realized until then that it's about a serial killer, since on the surface it seems like just another bouncy Paul song. Blew her mind. LOL
"I just take it as a laugh" Basically I think that's all it is suppose to be. However I think it could also be a Monty Pythonish sketch featuring the Fab Four metaphorically cast. Maxwell Edison(ME) is Paul, who gets away with "murder" making the others rehearse MSH to death, ("Again fellas from the top!") and it's killing them to do it. Joan/John is brilliant date/rival in science studies/songwriting partner. Annoyed teacher/George is grump who doles out character building punishment. Judge/Ringo is wise, fair, but doesn't see whats coming! Complete with P.C.31 (police guards) and court gallery scruffs (fans). Showbiz jargon, "kill the people", or "killed it" are metaphors which means "win over big" or "great success" which are clues that "serial killer" MSH's "killing spree" is a song about the Fab Four and of their overwhelming success during Beatlemania craziness. At least that's my take on it.
MSH is not near as sick and twisted as the Life of Brian, but comparing it to Monty Python is on the right track. I can't believe this! Why are you people defending a song about a psycopathic murderer?
Having a knowledge of keyboards and not a direct fan of Paul, however it is a well constructed song, it has a lot of elements, solid piano lilt and rhythm - it is like a school report for adult life. It's a story, of hope and revenge.
Yes! As soon as I find a graveyard/ church (without being disrespectful) they'll allow to me to film in absolutely. At this point I want to give as much to each song and some I have in mind are going to take a lot more planning that others. But that songs top on my list.
Never knew that about the song, always able to get the good stuff in your videos, great job! I honestly didn't know what to think about the song and most of Abbey road until I was older
I remember the video for this on The Old Grey Whistle Test ( BBC rock music prog', way back) always liked the song along with Yellow Submarine and Octopuses Garden, these tunes are clever little pieces .
I grew up from 74 listening to THE Beatles ALL the time. And I must of been in my 30's when I realised as you say ''How bat shit crazy'' the lyrics were. I never even delved into the lyrics as the song was so damn 'Jolly' I guess is the word I am looking for. I love your Videos. And thanks for this.
I have been a beatles fan for most my life - say 15 years or so. For all this time i just enjoyed the music, not much deeper thinking. I must say, ever since I watched your first video I could Not stop. Plus, I have noticed ive been listening and enjoying The Beatles even nore now. You really give these lyrics a fresh point of view. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU SO MUCH
I used to hate that song. The most corny thing they did, but the production makes up for it, it's just so crisp and fresh sounding, nice guitar solo, and kind of a break from the heavier stuff, still not my favorite Beatles's song, but definitely contributes to the uniqueness of Abbey Road.
Normally I prefer it when you just talk down the barrel of the camera but that last segment was really well done. I can understand the internal criticism of the song considering Maxwell's is something very reminiscent of Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt Pepper's. The Beatles were way past that type of music at that point so I'm not surprised by the negative comments. It's also worth mentioning there was a lot of negativity between them at that time so those comments are kind of par for the course
you're sooo right on! i used to listen to this crazy song all the time when i was a kid and it never struck just how whacked out totally INSANE it is...I mean a dude named Maxwell running round bashing people's heads in!!!???
If you don't like Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Blue Jay Way and Glass Onion then you're not really a proper Beatles fan in my opinion. Even Harrison said he quite liked Maxwell's - he said it had a 'fruity' sound. That might be partly due to the jaunty, Yellow Submarine-like beat but also McCartney's lusciously pronounced vocals e.g. on 'down', 'writing', 'so oh oh oh'. It's a great perkily sinister kind of introduction to the following McCartney -penned song 'Oh! Darling' ( you can imagine it being Maxwell pretending 'I'll never do you no harm') which was Lennonesque in its plaintive rawness (Lennon thought he should have sang Oh! Darling so he clearly liked it .
This is the first of your videos I've seen. very enjoyable. You put a lot of effort in and there's some genuinely funny moments. May favorite part, though, is the comment section where everyone is saying "I'm the only person in the world who likes this song." :-) Give 'em the hammer....
Ok, so I know I am very bias as I have had this wonderful fellow on my podcast (#plug), but seriously I did not expect this fantastic American Psycho tribute, awesome stuff Mr HollyHobs, you have really outdone yourself good sir! I know you read these, drop me a message!
Dude, you are over thinking it. I LOVE Maxwell Silver Hammer! I admit, at first I didn't like or get it, and thought it was too "oh, oh, oh"--ver the top goofy. But by the second or third listen, something about it just clicked and I found that I liked it...A lot. The catchy melody. The absolute bizarre theme, the plot of the story, like a 3 act play. Bouncy drawn out rhymes that echo (Oh-oh-oh, Joa-oa-oa-on, sce-e-e-ene, so-o-o-o). The protagonist of the song is: The "Baddest of the Bad-Asses", murders his brilliant date (because she's smart...or too smart by half?) his teacher (who punishes him Bart Simpson style) and the presiding judge, who's about to pronounce sentence but doesn't see what's coming! Somehow those three characters remind me of 3 others...guess who! Maxwell Edison (ME) is Paul who gets away with "murder" making the others rehearse MSH to death ("Again fellas, from the top!") and it's "killing" them to do it. Joan/John is equally smart date/rival in science studies/songwriting partner. Annoyed Teacher/George is grump who doles out character building punishment. Presiding Judge/Ringo is wise and fair but doesn't see what's coming right at him. P.C.31/Police guards and Court Gallery Scruffs/Fans. Showbiz jargon "Killed" is a metaphor for "great success". All these were clues that "serial killer", MSH's killing spree, is a story about the Fab Four, of their overwhelming success and craziness of Beatlemania. Paul wins as the one who prevails over adversity and adversaries (the objections of the other 3 however much they complained they hated the song, none of them vetoed it making it onto the album). Now that's pure GENIUS. Anyway I love the song and now it's considered a Beatles classic by so many...loved and hated but never forgotten!). LOL!

Dude I loved the Beatle bunch skit! You're production and acting is getting better each video and I love what you're doing! I was wondering if you could give any links to those "actual quotes" by the other Beatles. It would be interesting to hear where the quotes came from. Thanks and keep up the good work!
If you're looking for interesting quotes, Beatles Bible is a great place to start. www.beatlesbible.com/songs/maxwells-silver-hammer/
When your acting career takes off, remember us, ok?
The intro to this is absolutely genius. And the whole video is awesome! Thank you for bringing light to such a notable piece of Beatles lore :)
Maxwell's Silver Hammer is a fantastic song and I really can't say I'm surprised with how they feel about the song though.
Good work Hobs.
I started clapping when you said and they still didn’t take away his hammer haha fucking genius you rock man you really know your shit
About how Max got his hammer on the court, he somehow managed to take the evidence (hammer) swiftly and killed the judge
I thought I knew my Beatles but you really do your research for these. Great job
Maxwell was their HI5 Handler who constantly warned them to keep their mouth's shut.
That point at 1:00 is absolutely perfect, and the dance too :)
OMG I have that same record player! (Victrola 6 in 1)Every one online hates on it and says it's bad, but I love mine, plays my Beatles vinyls great! You guys having it makes me like it even more.
I subscribed as soon as i saw the "Being for the benefit of Mr.Kite" poster that inspired him to write that very song. I love the American psycho reference also, i love your Beatles and H3 videos. Keep it up dude
Nothing wrong with Maxwell's Silver Hammer! Just a great and enjoyable underrated song among some of the greatest songs ever written like Something.
I sincerely hope Mary Harron sees that opening bit. Marvelous!!!
I’ve always liked this song. I think I really offended someone when I played it to them once. Love the mix of the jolly tune with the sinister story. Great video love the sketches
True fact, A movie was made where John Played Maxwell and he actually yelled HERE'S JOHNNY when the Door was opened. It was called: "the shining"
🤣🤣 ✌and ❤
Nice reference to American psycho
Edit: btw I don't know why people hate the song I love it, the lycris are really good ,and the vocals are really good and the hammer part so perfect
LOL
love this funny song it is like a Monty Python sketch, but it doesn't compare to all the other songs, I just take it as a laugh
"I just take it as a laugh"
Basically I think that's all it is suppose to be.
George Penton I don’t think anyone likes it because it’s about a murderer. We all like it because it’s a fine work of art.
I love the song. It sounds like you can gather around a fire and have a group singalong just like with yellow submarine
Many people miss that it's a singalong song very cleverly done.
Having a knowledge of keyboards and not a direct fan of Paul, however it is a well constructed song, it has a lot of elements, solid piano lilt and rhythm - it is like a school report for adult life. It's a story, of hope and revenge.
Great video. I especially enjoyed the "Beatle Bunch"-section!
I like Maxwell Silver Hammer. You can also hear Paul kinda laugh while singing the line “writing 50 times I must not be so, o, o, o”
Great video! Could you please do a video on Eleanore Rigby?
Yes! As soon as I find a graveyard/ church (without being disrespectful) they'll allow to me to film in absolutely. At this point I want to give as much to each song and some I have in mind are going to take a lot more planning that others. But that songs top on my list.
The HollyHobs hell yeah! One of my favs!
I finally fell in love with this song. That upbeat music with darker lyrics. Man. They were way ahead of their time.
It's still one of my favorite tracks on that album
YES ANOTHER UPLOAD THANK YOU
edit: noticed that paul magically turned right-handed hahah
Hilarious opening! Lol
From the bottom of my heart,
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I was listening to the part when he says, “ i must not be so,” and you can hear paul giggling a litte bit.
I used to hate that song. The most corny thing they did, but the production makes up for it, it's just so crisp and fresh sounding, nice guitar solo, and kind of a break from the heavier stuff, still not my favorite Beatles's song, but definitely contributes to the uniqueness of Abbey Road.
I love the way you're expanding your style with each new video. I'm completely entertained by your creativity and knowledge. Keep up the great work!
I love the intro. Great job man!
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
These acting scenes are really great!
Great song and great video! I love the tempo of the song.
American Psycho I feel was so fitting for Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, which add a taste of uniqueness and metal in the man’s head
my friend's mom used to sing this to him as a lullaby...
I play this song a lot and my two little sisters LOOOVE to sing along to the chorus hahahaha such a fun song.
would continue watching this but I have to return some video tapes
That's been done to death already. lol
you're sooo right on! i used to listen to this crazy song all the time when i was a kid and it never struck just how whacked out totally INSANE it is...I mean a dude named Maxwell running round bashing people's heads in!!!???

Love your videos. Always watch them as soon as I get the notification.
Thanks for doing my suggestion haha, great video!
Thanks SAM!
LOL!
I always assumed the silver hammer was referencing the hammer on a hand gun?
Same here! Or something more metaphorical.
hammers can kill people... Is that not common knowledge? guns are banned in the UK bro
Back in school again, Maxwell plays the fool again!
Loved it, again.
Max says, "I'm crazy!"
You can't just have your characters say how they feel! THAT MAKES ME FEEL ANGRY!!!
A+ intro
Maxwell's Silver Hammer might actually be my favourite Beatles song.
