As a BA I cringe at the thought of him calling himself a BA. He gives all true BAs a bad name. We are actually intelligent, hard working, research and data driven, value-adding, drivers of change, & we are an absolute necessity for the health & well-being of the organization we work for. Dave is none of those things while also being an absolute fool who brings no value to the industry he supposedly analyzes & “reports” on.

@Myrridan19 I am sure he has picked up a bit of knowledge. Considering he has wrote more about it than I would imagine any reporter on any sport in history. He has a weekly newsletter that is what 20000 to 30000 words going back 40 years.

Meanwhile, he routinely grants 5+ stars to random television matches that have zero psychology nor storytelling and are forgotten about the very next week. This tells me that Dave doesn't understand pro wrestling. Any great matches he actually has rated highly was only a coincidence. He only looks at workrate but has zero understanding of context. To Dave, that doesn't matter. But in pro wrestling, it is how the sauce is made.

Leaving aside if you like The Observer or not and being duped by bad sources, but tweeting about the death of anyone before it's been announced by the family or officially, is absolutely appalling. People around Dave really need to get a hold of him and set him straight.

Problem I've always had with wrestling "journalists" is they have no way to verify things. In sports reporting you constantly get scoops from agents. You then call GM, Asst GM, coaches, scouts, clubhouse moles etc to try and confirm. In wrestling whether its K Sullivan or R Flair or whomever in 80s or 90s or the guys now you have no way of verifying your scoops. So Meltzer was smart enough to just run with it and pre internet no one could dispute it because they just ignored him. Wrestlers are notorious liars who spread gossip about guys they hate
The wrestling bubble is too small for this to matter, because if this was a CNN or Fox News report they would've resigned in disgrace within 24 hours.

I was a fan for years, hearing the name Meltzer around, but i never cared for dirt sheets/spoilers, so I wasn't accutley aware of his body of work.
Then, one day, after the Brock/Taker cell match (the second one), I read an article from him talking about Vince's reaction to the blood, as if he were backstage and witnessed it himself.
"Wow" I thought, "They aren't ever letting this guy backstage again."
Then I saw another article a little while later and he was again commenting as if he were in the know.
"Oh.... this guy is a journalist as a gimmick, he is just making things up and working people."
It took two articles for me to deduce that.
Meltzer is a gossip columnist. Wrestling is a work. He is no different than any tabloid out there.

I see both sides of it. Giving Meltzer the benefit of the doubt... not that he deserves it, but the wrestling news now is so much worse than it ever was before the internet as a provider of news because life happens 24/7, and so does the internet. The desire to be "first" with something has always been a big thing for news media in general, but now that social media is a thing, if you want to be first with something, you either have to have incredible sources close to the story, or you have to keep laser-focused on any sort of social media almost literally 24/7 if you want to be first or one of the first. It can't be easy to be in that position, and I would imagine it's the easiest thing in the world to slip up and be wrong under those conditions.
That being said, when your desire to be first supersedes your responsibility of doing your due diligence as a member of the media... this is what happens, and that's exactly what it is. It's irresponsible... and certainly with this particular situation, it's incredibly disrespectful. It would've been very easy to start DMing members of the family or using whatever contacts or connections he's got to get ahold of one of them to simply float out the following to them: "Hey, I've been hearing that Afa just passed away. If you don't want to talk about this with me, then please don't feel like you have to. I respect your privacy. If however you're interested in having those rumors dispelled, I'd be happy to use my platform and my reach to make a statement denying the rumors that Afa has passed away."
That's all. I think anybody with any self-respect and respect for their profession, their reach, and their responsibility to the industry that they're covering should've done that... but here we are, and it's a shame. I think people will respect you more for being right than for being first.
