I love Howard! That type of singing (heavy vibrato) is not typically seen in new metal, but it's all over classic metal (ex. Iron Maiden).

Harsh vocals have to come from within with real passion, his harsh vocals were better in Blood Has Been shed but as soon as he joined kse added some fake screamo to his vocals. He's a lot better in light the torch because less unnecessary screamo and more wonderful singing

The lead singer's voice in my opinion is great, he has a strong voice, which fits well with the strong tone of the band, it give KSE another element vocally instead of just screaming.
I love how uncomfortable George looks during the screaming parts. 😂

Howard Jones is the man. Who else in Metal has ever sounded like that??? If you would have watched him live with KSE, you would understand the one of a kind monster of a vocalist he is. Absolutely mind blowing. Often as good if not better live. The deepest, most powerful, guttural vocal rips with a perfect transition into the manliest vocal melodies imaginable. Dude has been basically untouchable within his spectrum talentwise for the past 15 years. Crazy thing is that he looks back at recordings like that, and knows that he can do so much better today with the skills he has learned. Only thing that doesn't match is your expectation of what you assume a genre should sound like.
Entertaining, smart, well spoken, enthusiastic, open minded ... well done fellas. Subbed!

Did you guys realise that the lead singer at the time of the release of this song was a black man? Not that matters at all but I was just curious, I just think if more people would realise things like that and see that there isn't as much of a divide between all races we can push the boundaries of Racism completely out of sight and start being Human together. Is he still the singer? I was listening to KSE when they first came out. I began to listen to them less once this Howard guy became their singer.
Howard left a couple of years ago due to health reasons. Jesse became the singer again after Howard's departure.
Howard is now lead singer for Devil You Know.

I like how Ryan(the guy in the cap) is just vibing so hard as if he went back to his early days! I got the same feeling with a lot of Nu Metal bands and also this exact KSE song
I like Howard's voice, but mainly because of the time that this album came out, he didn't sound like any other singer for any other band that was part of that new wave of American Heavy Metal in 2000-2005.
Opeth “Ghost of Perdition” would be an awesome reaction from the best progressive death metal band!

lotuscorpse Yeah Howard wrote about his past breakups and Jesse is suicide, substance abuse, breaking the law, death, new technology, letting go, being a better person the list goes on and on.
Howard is the better vocalist and my favorite of all time but I think Jesse's voice fits better with their musical style.
I don't dislike Howard as a vocalist, or the Howard era albums, but neither scratched the itch for more AoJB. Jesse isn't as technically accomplished, but his lyrical stylings were a lot more introspective and his delivery was raw and filled with heart and passion. The Howard era stuff seemed to be trying to take My Last Serenade and stretch that formula over a couple of albums. Some good stuff in there but not a whole lot of variety.
Alive or Just Breathing will forever be the jewel in KSE's crown... that album is just rock solid quality beginning to end. Seeing Jesse come back into the fold was exciting, not because Howard was leaving, but because I always felt he was an integral part of what made that first album so damn good.
This is One of my favorite bands right now

I've been watching these guys for a while and just happened on this vid from back in the day. It is just awesome to see George's transformation when it comes to metal/rock songs. Going from hardly standing the likes of Killswitch all the way to really appreciating and genuinely enjoying even some of the lesser known artists. Lots of love guys. Goodness, you guys are too much! I love it, this is one of my favorite songs, I think someone in the comments said that this lead singer is black, which is true, it use to be a white guy. I like them both, but I think their song, "Serenaded" would be more your style. Anyway love it, please don't change on us.

Howard (black guy) was the lead singer while Jessie (white guy) was gone (started off as the lead singer).. Jessie is now back as the lead singer.. I would check out their first album Alive or Just Breathing with My Last Serenade and Just Barely Breathing as my favorites

I think the album with "My Last Serenade" is one of their best and that had the original vocalist on it. I love Howard but Jessie was fucking great.

LOL! Howard is the shiznit! Vocally his range is stellar....he's singing to this genre. Personally, and IMO...feel the "Radio Edit" of "My Curse" really shows what he's really about...that tune strips the scream and allows him to use his real voice.

Although Jesse started KSE with the rest of the band, I MUCH PREFER Howard(who is black but has nothing to do with it) I really believe he made Killswitch as big as it was... Jesse over the years has gotten better at the singing portion but Howard was great at both singing and screaming.. total package man I wish he was back with them..
David Brunell Alive or Just Breathing is what made KSE big, The End of Heartache made them more mainstream (being the song on Resident Evil), but don't forget that Jesse had written a lot of that music and lyrics already.
Yeah, I understand, but bands can be made or broken by their vocalists.. Howard overall had a better quality of voice.. Jesse has gotten a lot better in the time he left and came back though.

I 100% disagree with you, but I completely understand, haha. Everybody has their different tastes in music. That is why there is so many different forms of music. For me, Howard Jones (the singer) was the reason Killswitch Engage became one of my top favorite metal bands. I loved how he could transition back and forth between opera-ish singing and growls, and that his voice sounds so powerful. At that time, his voice along with metal music was unique compared to the other metal songs I was listening to, which drew me to it.

Onitake - Howard's voice/Killswitch's sound is exactly what drew me to the band. The fact that it is SOOOOOOOO different than the majority of classic /thrash/speed/death/black /nu-metal.

Howard was good for 2 albums. The second self titled album was their worst after their first self titled. I love the changes that happened once Jesse came back. You can just tell the band needed a refresh.

I used to work with Howard Jones brother he was cook at the restaurant I bartender at and one night we both working late it was bug spray night so all the soda guns, beer taps and booze hand sinks had to be covered or put away! Anyway my manager was cool( this was my bad old days;me, the Head Chef, Couple Sous Chefs split a 8-ball oF W-Gurl And I played this CD over our restaurant speakers and Andre was like that’s my brother! They are 1 year apart and Andre was into hip-hip etc and his brother was famous Metal singer and I was like how did that happen and he said there Uncle was into Metallica and Slayer and influential on Howard and I got to meet him and Killswitch because of Andre!

I'm way more of a Jesse (KsE 1st vocalist) fanboy for the his aggressive and even, at times, blues'ish style.
But I'll NEVER deny Howard's vocals prowess and range nor what he brought to the band in making it to the big stages.
After all he was the current singer when I first discovered the band.

For a change (coming from a long time metal fan) I know a funk jazz band you guys might love. It has groove like crazy and the skill level is beyond comprehension. The band is called Snarky Puppy and the song I mean is Lingus. It's also interesting for you to watch because you see the actual recording is the video (;

Ah, oldschool Killswitch. I respect Howard's vocal power, but I find the metal ballard thing that Killswitch more or less embodied for a good while, was so fucking cheesy that it undermined everything they did.
