My husband was in the Argylls and he says they have always had a military band as well as a pipe band. The racist comments sicken me. They are fine looking soldiers every one. We didn't fight WW2 so that we could have racially 'pure' regiments like the SS.

You might like to know that many militant Muslims hate the Gurkhas and call them 'traitors'. Recommendation indeed. I am all for black and brown people joining the British Army. All of whom, I'm sure, are proud to be British and defend British values with their lives. It proves that they don't have a huge 'professional victim' chip on their shoulder, like the above, and are prepared to muck in like everybody else, and help save this country from sick Islamic tyranny.

We never fought WW2 to destroy our culture and our proud heritage. To see these blacks walking about dresssed in what is almost the Scotland National costume is absurd and an afront.Perhaps you don't have a heritage or a national costume where you come from. Get real ya moron.

I am American and I am ashamed to read of these sickening racist and bigoted remarks about these brave soldiers, regardless of their color. They donned that uniform to fight for the standards by which the British have stood proudly in defense of for centuries. Shame and disgrace to any that would besmirch them. Thank God for these brave man and women in uniform that fight around the world to keep us safe!

+crashrandy Good on you ! Back in the day, British Regiments did 10 year postings. India, China, Canada. In the last century, after 10 years in Southern Ireland most of the Argyll recruits were Irish. Black soldiers and sailors have fought alongside Brits long before Trafalgar and Waterloo. Never properly chronicled. Saw the statue to the Buffalo Soldier at Fort Leavenworth. UK should do the same. Can't help noticing all the supporting comments from real soldiers. If you didn't serve you don't understand. So message for the idiots; shut up. Read your Burns; A man's a man for aw that !

To those who seem puzzled by soldiers of different races in the Army, it has been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years. There were quite a few Saxon soldiers in the Byzantine Army who migrated there after the Norman invasion of Britain. The history of the British Empire is full of soldiers and sailors from all parts of the world. Check out the history of VC holders and you will see quite a few who are not Anglo Saxons or Celts.

My grandfather joined the Argylls in his native Ireland and became a CSM before being killed 100 years ago. He never returned to his native village from which was ostracised for joining the British Army. His father came to live with my grandmother's family. My uncle visited the village in the 1950s and asked for access to the parish records. The parish priest said, "My son, if I were you I'd leave well alone."

To the people puzzled and/or offended by the presence of black soldiers in the Scottish regiments - recruiting non-Scottish members into Scottish Regiments to make up numbers is a practice that has been going on for hundreds of years (at one point in the Napoleonic Wars, about 13% of the Black Watch were English, Welsh or Irish).
The relatively recent influx of black soldiers into the Scottish regiments (as well as Asian recruits, and white recruits from the Commonwealth which no one seems to complain about) was a measure taken because said regiments and battalions were critically undermanned (and they still are). The campaign to "Save the Scottish regiments!" was actually a moderate success; the amalgamations hit the English and Welsh units even harder (ie, just look at the complicated lineage of The Rifles or The Royal Welsh Regiment) , and currently Scottish battalions make up 14% of the infantry despite Scotland only making up 8% of the UK's population.
In short, if you are lamenting the amalgamation of the Scottish regiments and consider it a "betrayal" or a question of budget cuts, but complain about the presence of black soldiers in a Highland Regiment because it's not traditional, you're an idiot. The foreign recruits being funneled into the Scottish regiments are the only thing keeping them from being amalgamated further, and serving in a Scottish regiment (especially on operations) makes them more of a Scotsman than some grungy old dinosaur who hasn't. Either learn to accept your Fijians, or consider campaigning for further amalgamations or disbanding instead.

Sir Pants well said!! If it were not for troops from the commonwealth the RRS would be even more undermanned than it is just now. And it’s not just black commonwealth soldiers, there are plenty of white South Africans, New Zealander’s, Aussies, and as you say, English. Me being one of them. Funny how folk moan but won’t sign on the dotted line themselves.

As a Scot, I find some comments here very strange regarding the colour of some members of the Scottish regiments, if they fought in the regiment then they are Scots, irrespective of colour or where they were born. As we say, we are all Jock Thampsons bairns.

+Andy Galloway Cheers Andy, mind you I know some old school lads in the Scots Guards that might beg to differ. I am Australian. I met the Duke of Argyll quite by accident in the grounds of Government House, New South Wales, Sydney, circa 1990. I was a young uniformed Special Constable NSW Police Force, charged with securing premises such as Government House, the Sydney Police Center and so on. I had my new rotation on Government House, at 5AM. Walking the perimeter in the early dawn I spot this fellow walking up and down, I was not briefed on who might be in residence and as I did not recognize him as part of Air Chief Marshall Sir James Rowland's family (who I knew quite well visually) I immediately challenged him. The fellow turned, hands behind his back and said "why, I am the Duke of Argyll" in a perfect English accent. I said "I beg your pardon your Grace" and snapped an old school British Army salute. He nodded and strolled off, hands behind his back. True story. Cheers mate.

I know it's been a wee bit but before the UK government decided to bring in other countries into our Scottish regiments they first had to change the name to move forward. A government paper many years before this talked about the low numbers joining up and knew that bringing in other nationals would be difficult so they change the Regiments names.
      Ex Argyll

Ime learning, but I have an education... on my mothers side we r Wards, that's her middle name, l count it back to scotland, also. There's a book, "when scotland was jewish" written by a Taylor and another famous name. They trace it back to the 1400's, say it's DNA research I was taught by my rabbi that when Israel was leaving Egypt some of us builded boats and went west and ended up on the Emerald isles, which calls to mind: us gaels.🎉😮

I have seen some nasty comments of racial vilification here and I have to say that I am appalled and disgusted with what I have seen. When I see a military parade or a single serviceman in uniform, I don't see the colour of his skin, I see the uniform first, then I see the face, and I see the pride of that person wearing that uniform. I know, I am an ex serviceman and I wore my RAAF uniform with pride. For those who have made negative comments, if that serviceman of a different colour was born, say in this case Scotland, does that not make him a Scot? I am of Scottish heritage, but I am an Aussie. One final thing for the vilifiers. You take on one, you take on all, black, white, yellow, red, purple with pink polka dots, it doesn't matter, a brother in arms is family.

+Mac McLean Very, very well said.
And to all the fools out there - a Scotsman or Scotswoman is known by their hearts, not the color of their skin, nor how distant from Scotland they may have been born. It's in the blood, not the pigment. You want to know who is a true Scot? Watch their faces when the pipes begin to play; you'll see us there and the tears will fall with Scotland the Brave. I stand by what I have said. In this case I don't see a black man wearing a kilt or playing the pipes. I see a soldier of an Scottish Regiment. My Scots blood roars with pride. I don't need to resort to useless naming calling and insults to get my point across. Oh, and just another wee point. Scots were originally known as Picts and they came from Scandinavian countries. Here's to the men of the Highland Division
From the time the world began.
And here's to the Pipes and Drums as they march
Each man to serve his Clan.
Remember the Seaforths, the Camerons, the Argylls,
The Black Watch, the Gordons with their cocky wee smiles,
The Cameronians, The Royal Scots and the KOSB,
The HLI, the Greys and the Bold Fusilier with a glint in his eee'.
Think of their honours, in battles they have won,
Think of the fathers, the brothers, the sons,
Think of the scars that we cannot see,
And the lands far away, that they have set free.
Now Honour these men from the present to the past,
With great pride in your heart and thoughts that will last.

Regardless of race, religion, creed and gender, if you can't stand behind your troops, perhaps you would like to stand in front of them while their rifles are aimed at you. The Scottish regiments were dispersed all over the world for over 300 years at the service of the British empire. These regiments in turn enlisted the local population to serve within their ranks. Is that not written in Scottish history books?

+Vinny Valante They were decommissioned in, I believe it was, 2006, and merged into the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Someone can confirm the year but they are no more as Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. :'(

Or wait-was this the regimental silver stolen by the estranged wife of Lord Grantham's valet that he took the blame for? I'm sure that it was easy to fence regimental silver! Today, you could put it on eBay and US collectors would snatch it up.

As I have said before, I thought the comments box was for saying what you thought about the content and not all this political rubbish. For a couple of years I was not able to comment, and now I can again, I'm not particularly bothered. And my last point is the music and the film were both good. I suppose nobody will agree with these comments.

For someone who demonstrates such patriotic interests, its a pity you choose to besmirch the name of a patriot as an "idiot" whose family have actually served with the Argyles. I am no lover of the Argyles as their ancestral regiment was founded in Hanoverianism as opposed to my own which originates in Jacobite Clans but yes indeed - a Yes vote in the referendum will result in re-instatement of the Argyles - probably as airborne forces. Lets not forget, only 7 years ago we had a whole Division.

Could you join them if you are from another country? our country is full of shit and I'm tired of this stupid news saying another one got killed here and there. Joining the army in our country will take your lives into risk of dying so I wanna join armies around the world instead.
