This episode freaked me out as a kid. The way the zombies were designed made me so scared especially considering they seemed to be intelligent. The part where he tries to "cure" Robin and Batgirl especially stuck with me. I never saw the ending of the episode when I was young so it stuck in my head as to what happened to all the characters.

Same for me but with the vs. Dracula film. Seeing the citizens being attacked by vampires, the vampire Joker attacking that blood bank, the presure of knowing if Bruce doesn't do something fast, all Gotham will be a vampire nest... that scene with a citizen hearing a little girl cryin in the middle of the street at dusk, only to see it was a trap and she was a vampire?
Literal chills from thinking about that movie

The Batman is such an underrated show. Having recently rewatched it I love it even more than I did when I watched it as a kid.
My only gripe with this episode is that this whole scheme seems more in line with something Scarecrow would do, not Strange. But I guess Scarecrow doing it would've made too obvious
Blame the bat-embargo
They couldn’t use scarecrow so they used strange
honestly while it does feel like a scarecrow plot, i think the bat embargo forcing them to use someone else did a lot to aid this episode! Like you said, Scarecrow would of given the twist away the moment they revealed it was Scarecrow to begin with!
So using Hugo Strange actually lets the twist be well, a twist! : D

@@sunnyd6519 I don't like this take, it's like they just put Strange in because the similarity to Scarecrow is uhh.. brain stuff I guess? It's like if they wrote this episode and the culprit was Joker because "him and Scarecrow use gasses" or whatever.. it is 100% a Scarecrow plot and if they couldn't use him, they should have wrote a different plot
this was my favorite series of batman because all the villains had their own way to fight! loved the jokers manic fighting style and how riddler even fights too
This is by far my favorite episode. I love Hugo Strange and also seeing Batman embrace his detective side.
This show was my childhood, im glad people are talking about it WAAAAAY more, its to underrated man.
I remember watching this episode when it aired. This was my batman when I was a kid. Other great episodes were the clayface episode and when Batman fights off an alien episode and even the villains steps out to protect their city
Spoilers: Upon rewatching the episode, you understand WHY Robin and Batgirl cowered away at the "antidote". It isn't the antidote, it's the real virus. So Robin and Batgirl were scared of what Batman was REALLY going to do to them if they got too close. Scary stuff huh?

this is kinda what i wanted from dceased or dc vs vampires
DCeased was made better by not being a Batman centric story imo. I'm just so tired of DC stories putting him center stage.
Hugo hit Bruce and Dick with that premium Za. In all seriousness this, fw with this episode just wish they was allowed to use Scarecrow but it is what it is
a note of interest, Hugo was the FIRST villain of batman to use the fear toxin, not scarecrow, so this makes perfect sence.
Mannn I like Hugo Strange but what this was the origin episode for Scarecrow? And at the end you found out the villain's name was Jonathan Crane! Still loved the episode
They weren't allowed to use certain characters in the series in case people was to get confused over which version they are, like for example Robin weren't introduced into the series until Teen titans was over. Scarecrow wasn't allowed to be used for this same reason because this came out around the time of Batman Begins.
Also another character weren't in this show, Two Face but what they did instead was have Clayface as a surrogate for him.
Same similar thing is even happening now with modern DC in multimedia unless their explicitly elseworld stuff, everything from next year's Superman movie is gonna be in the same continuity
This show was the one I grew up with but didnt remember this episode, great video by the way

AAAAA!! This episode was my FAVORITE when I was younger! I always rewatched it on Netflix. I was always into Zombies and horror as a kid so this was a treat.
I’ve never been a big fan of this show. It always valued action over character. Regardless, I like hearing why others enjoy it, and this was a great review.
I've always been sad that The Batman has been so forgotten overtime. Trapped under the decades-long shadow of the DCAU no doubt. But this show has always had some of my all time favorite designs for the characters- So angular and sharp, and heavily stylized- Perfection. Loved the video, here's a free sub.

Yeah definitely agree that with most batman villains because they're so well known at this point it can be difficult to set up a proper mystery and have the reveal be surprising but this episode did a great job

Best Batman Show
This was the first episode of any batman cartoon I'd seen as a kid
The best part of this episode is that the reveal is hinted at through tropes and contrivences common in zombie and super hero stories
Such as why were the zombies so capable how do supposedly brainwashed or mindless heros use their gadgets perfectly how come the zombies can even talk in the first place even if it is simple words and no sentences how did capable fighters lime batgirl gordon and the gcpd get infected instantly like that
All these little questions you never think to ask end up being how batman solves the mystery
So pretty much just got fear gassed
People who say "Batman should just Kill the criminals" need to think about this. Just warp Batman's perspective and he has the potential skills and resources to "Kill Criminals" by the millions, who were actually innocent bystanders.

The Batman is one of the greatest batman shows.
Another episode that I keenly remember having to work around the Bat Embargo for what was clearly a different character's schtick is the one with the toys made by Krankco.
This show was amazing. It was very fun and was different as Bruce wasn’t as dark and lonesome as every other adaptation of him. It was definitely still Bruce but a lot less dark as a person

Twist twist ending, Batman is now zombified and in that state he sees everyone and everyone as “ok” and “normal” again

Leave it to The Batman to have a zombie episode as well as a vampire episode and an alien invasion episode. The series definitely liked to focus on the more out there plots, showing just how much Batman was in over his head, which makes the introduction of the Justice League in the final season makes sense. Too bad this didn't lead into a new Justice League series.
This should’ve been a Scarecrow episode but still I loved this as a kid
This was one of the best twists I ever scene. This version of Batman is one of my favorites. The only complaint I have is that they changed Mr. Freezes backstory to a simple jewel thief and that it.
Technically that was his orginal portrayal until animated changed it but yeah i agree atleast he has cool (laugh) desgin

Two episodes before this one that shows how messed up strange is a fistfull of felt where the Ventriloquist is cured and given a nicer puppet to replace Scarface gives him back Scarface and it’s very tragic. Both him and the new puppet are destroyed and he’s crying over saying that he was the best friend he ever had Batman only hopes he’s talking about the nice puppet and then there’s Gotham greatest criminal mind. Which strains creates an artificial intelligence based on the greatest criminals in Gotham, let it escape, and it causes a lot of chaos it the AI figure out who Batman is and it’s only defeated because he didn’t know it was an AI. Also strange put his own obsession with the Batman in it the question is, does the Batman strange know who Batman is and the way the AI figured out Batman is basically the same way strange dead in Arkhamcity

It's a great episode too bad there are a lot of deleted scenes or cut content in this episode. Like how Hugo Strange figures out that Bruce Wayne is Batman or when Batman and Robin meet Jim Gordon at the Batsingal before they get infected. Yep, just all cut.

At the end of the episode, bat girl said that strange got moved upstairs at maximum security. And when batman was done talking to him there, he sent guards to get him. But the guards were wearing normal clothes? They cant be normal people because its arkham asylum. And they cant be prisoners because they are wearing casual clothes. So who are they?

I'd argue the awesome heights of The Batman are counterbalanced by the stupid. The moment that sticks out in my head being Scarface/the Ventriloquist designing and building a functional mecha.
Yeah, some of the really bad episodes of the show (especially seasons 1, 3, and 5) tend to be overlooked a bit.

That episode was like probably the final dark episode the Batman had. I feel like the series gave up the gothic vibe and just went to be more do a series made to sell toys makes sense.
