    The writers gave Powers some of the best lines I've ever heard; whether as himself or as Blight.
    "It's better to be feared than loved." -While selling the idea of villainy to Walter Shreeve; and this is after calmly no-selling Shreeve admitting he's in the office to kill Powers! He never takes the guy with a suit capable of easily killing him seriously!
    "And behold: I shall be a blight upon the land; and everything I touch shall wither and die." -This is Derek Powers in a nutshell even before the radiation. While some moguls in fiction are unscrupulous or amoral; Powers ruins everything and everyone he comes in contact with. Wayne Enterprises may've been more profitable as Wayne-Powers; but look at the kind of stuff Powers got the company involved in. Look at Shriek, Mr. Freeze; hell, look at the man's own family! His son is a less competent chip off the old block!
    "Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?" -I'm convinced that the split second between Terry saying that Blight killed his dad and him responding to it was him actually trying to think of someone he'd killed/had someone else kill, realizing how huge that list was, and giving up!

    I think the fact that Batman/Terry never once considered that Paxton would want to kill Derek is pretty in-character for him and is a good juxtaposition for the 2 father-son duos. Like Paxton and Derek, Terry and his father rarely got along, and like Paxton, Terry felt like he was a disappointment to his father. However unlike Paxton, Terry could never once imagine ever wanting to hurt his father, no matter how bad their relationship got. So when Paxton says that he’ll only drain enough power from Blight to incapacitate him, of course Terry would believe him. He couldn’t imagine a son actually wanting to see his father dead. If anything, the biggest doubt he might have is Paxton actually following through with his end.

How many people was Derek Powers killing per day that even with all that info he had no clue who Batman might be?

  • @FirstLast-cg2nk

    I think my favorite villains from Batman Beyond were Willie Watt, Terminal, and Big Time. Why? because they feel like genuinely real people. How many of us have met a CEO or scientist? Meanwhile, we've all met the small and weak bookworm who gets relentlessly bullied, the kid who despite excellent academic performance is emotionally abused by parents pushing them to unrealistic standards, or the small-time bully who thinks he'll make it big.
    More importantly, however, we've all seen people like these three end up suffering similar fates to these characters. While Willie Watt getting a gigantic construction robot to attack the prom is unrealistic, how often do we hear about the quiet, bullied kid finally having enough and pulling out a pistol and gunning down his bullies? While Terminal becoming a psychotic gang leader is unrealistic, how often do we hear about the kid who had a stellar academic performance but had an awful home life and turned to drugs or crime as an outlet? While Big Time getting turned into a hideous mutant is unrealistic, how often do we see some small time criminal with delusions of making it big wind up either arrested or killed while committing small-time crimes?
    Batman's rogues gallery is more memorable, but Batman Beyond's rogues gallery feels more genuine.

    On one hand I agree Derek Powers/Blight was such a underused character it's blasphemous. The fact he used Bruce Wayne's company and assets to create a bioweapon to sell to dictators or/and terrorists, and had Warren McGinnis murdered to cover it up made him an enemy of both Batman generations. Also add his powers as a walking nuclear reactor and you have a formidable supervillain for sure. On the other hand, I can kinda understand why he was dropped in season 2. The simple fact it was lethal to just be anywhere near Blight can be seen as him being overpowered. Now one could make the argument Bruce could've upgraded Terry's Batsuit to provide better protection from radiation, but they clearly stated Blight's radiation became more severe as the season continued.

    Today I like it from a perspective where the stories can return to villian of the week and the crimes are lower stakes (the show was good at making these feel exciting).
    I feel like since this is Terrys early years, there could’ve plenty of time for Terry to find a nemesis and establish a rivalry. I also like that after Blight is taken out, there’s something like 20-30 years worth of low level crooks and gangs to deal with (his time to grind /train before the next Boss)

    Id say villains like Powers and Luthor are less criticism of capitalism itself, moreso the subset of capitalism known as corportism. Capitalism itself isnt evil, but it along with other forms of economics can easily be corrupted by those who are greedy and want power both politically and economically. In its own sense corporatism is the least capitalist form of capitalism as at its peak ends up resembling authoritarian state operated economies such as communism and fascism with monopolies that control every aspect of a persons life, because it ends up becoming the state controlled economy by becoming the government.

  • @DFuxaPlays

    I'm not really sure Batman Beyond needed to have stand out villain, at least initially. Blight was certainly the big bad evil guy that was in the background, but really when it came to Terry's villains they were more about demonstrating who the new Batman was. Even looking at Return of the Joker, you get to hear that loud and clear as Terry 'talk's' to Joker in their fight.
    They likely could have continued with the theme too - making Terry join the Justice League, demonstrating where he fits in, and so forth. Eventually they would likely have to go have a main villain to deal with for him perhaps in the long run, but as this is a new IP they really could just stick with world building for quite a bit.

    • @SerumLake
      @SerumLake  Год назад

      Yes, that’s very true and that’s part of why the Beyond villains don’t feel as fleshed out at the BTAS villains. We all knew who Bruce Wayne Batman was, so we didn’t need to get to know him in the same way that we did with Terry.

      Bruce Timm has a quote about how difficult it was to create villains for Batman Beyond because it was too easy to fall into the trap of just remaking all of the classic villains as "Future" versions. That at some point they were like "We really can't just give Terry a Joker and a Scarecrow and stuff right? That seems dumb."

  • @hugoalvarez8307
    @hugoalvarez8307 Год назад +3

    I don't believe Powers died at the end of season 1, for a couple of diferent reasons.
    First, and most importantly, Terry says at the end of the episode to Paxton that he just made a big enemy, and shows his excepticisim to Blights death.
    Secondly, this is the DC universe we're talking about. As Nick Fury once said in Ultimate Spider-Man "if there's no body, he isn't dead" (I know Spider-Man is a marvel character, but the quote works in both worlds). How many times have we seen the Joker, for example, "die" )or at leats fall in a place where he should have) yet he came back as if nothing happened?
    Now, I will admit It's a bit weird that he didn't show up again if he survived, but this can be explained by the creators. I once heard that they initially wanted Blight to be the big bad threw all of Batman Beyond, but they changed plans throw development.
    Either way, I personally think he survived and, if the show would have continued, we could have seen him again at some point

    • @SerumLake
      @SerumLake  Год назад +3

      I’m certain they left it open just in case they wanted to bring him back later on, but I prefer his story coming to an end in Ascension. Not only was his death very smarty conveyed through the light under water slowly fading away, but it gave Terry closure.
      I think the line to Paxton was more intended to give Terry some power over Paxton, after Paxton had deceived him. But of course, as you pointed out, we never did see the body (hence those not very good Batman Beyond comics…)
