Heard these guys in Oslo at the same tour. Warming up was David Sanborn Band. What a blast! I will never forget!! It snowed cows and horses and the band bus snowed down. The promotor, Blue Johnson (RIP) sent me Pictures of it.
Al Jarreaus Band: Al Jarreau - voc Alex Acuna - drums Sobby Lyle - keyb Malando Gassame - percussion George Hawkins - bass Charles Johnson - g James Studer - synthesizer Michael Paulo - saxophon, flute Michael Steward - trumpet
I saw this Rockpalast concert in 1985 on television. I was looking because Prince, the main act was playing after Al Jarreau. After seen Al, the concert of Prince was far less " swinging" ( how much i do like Prince, that night Al Jarreau was the better concert) I record all on cassette tape, since I have no player anymore, I am very pleased to see the whole concert now on RUclips :)
Prince was broadcast live via satellite from Syracuse. There were serious technical problems and most of it was broadcast in mono at the time. Still a brilliant concert too. Widely available on youtube etc. Great 20 min rendition of Purple Rain. Before Al Jarreau was Paul Young who was not bad at all, but not in the league of Al Jarreau nor Prince IMHO. RIP Al Jarreau. I hope you live up to your "I will be there for you" in music heaven.
So did I - but when I moved the cassette was left somewhere ... ;) Anyway great to see all this here on RUclips so thanks a lot to MrMartinfg for posting this.
I watched this back in 85 with some friends........and a lot of beers. David Sanborns bassplayer blew our minds. Two days later, I bought my first bass. Thanks for posting this. I`m on a trip down " Memory Lane " right now.
@@pierofrancescomarzani7749 No dude..........it AIN`T Marcus Miller playing here........I don`t remember his name , but it ain`t Marcus........he looks nothing like him.....apart from being black......

Al & Dave toured together because they were both on Warner Brothers. Caught them together at the Garden State Arts Center. Not only was Boby Lyle on keys, Nathan East was on bass. An unforgettable night.
I met Mike Stern at a little club (Horsefeathers) in Portland, ME in the early 80’s when he played with Tiger Okoshi’s band “Tiger’s Baku” with Gerry Etkins, Tim Landers, and Robbie Gonzales … great times!
Gotta love this, sooo eighties, brings back memories of Miami Vice, Miles Davis dressing like Michael Jackson, Yamaha DX7, Roland drum pads etc. Living in the Netherlands being able to watch the Rockpalast series was a real treat. A wide variety of music was featured at the time. Another one of those was the Steve Miller Band. Definitely not Mike Stern on guitar but some other stars like Alex Acuna (Koinonia!) on drums. Personnel listed in comments below.
Rockpalast was Ai´s second gig that night... before he played in Düsseldorf and I had the privilege to listen to.. what a great band... what a raw model of a r&b singer...
I wholeheartedly agree💖💞💕 with Denis! And I've played together with wonderful Malando Gassama (percussion, drums; deceased). All of this, such an undescribeble joy and heartlift!💖💞💕
Me too ;) Ricky Lawson also played the concert in London on the same tour, which was recorded for the live record "Al Jarreau live in London". This one is also on RUclips.
So it's: Al Jarreau - extreme singing Charles Icarus Johnson - guitar Michael Paulo - flute, saxophone Bobby Lyle - keyboard Alex Acuna - drums Malando Gassama - percussion Jim Studer - keyboards
Does anyone know the story with Charles "Icarus" Johnson? As you can see here, he is one hell of a guitarist and was a first choice for George Duke which should tell you something, I read that he just stopped playing? Why would someone so talented do that unless there was a physical/medical reason? I saw Al in London during his prime with a similar band but Hiram Bullock (RIP) on guitar who is one of the greatest guitarists too, sadly not with us due to bad health. RIP Al, truly one of the great voices, so many great songs and collaborations with Jay Graydon , Tom Canning and Larry Williams.
@@arctictfan3470 Thanks for the info, I think he'd be a lot more content playing music and staying away from politics.
