Im not a cop and i dont know shit but my thought was why is there one guy thinking for the whole team? One lead makes sense on any team but some autonomy of the team could have really helped here. Like why was nobody else thinking to provide cover and get civilian out of harms way? Why was nobody else thinking to put down a spike trap or to bring more cruisers in to block him in?

@@mr44magit's not that complex, if you hit any one of many major arteries or organs the fight ends in a minute or two at most and within seconds at best. Most cops in urban settings only shoot well enough to occasionally qualify. They aren't like the ones here in the country who carry submachine guns and spend all their free time at the range. Theres a big difference between a shooter who can single hole at 25 with a pistol while freestanding and someone who only runs a few mags per year.
Must be so hard for the officers to be nice to the guy while pulling him out after he almost ran over half the department.
Before body cams and a zillion cameras everywhere, i have no doubt they would at least beat on him some if not just smoked him when he didn’t immediately comply.
* I grew up in Houston where we had like three different police shootings where a throw down gun was used in a couple years. It reached the point where the joke in the city was, “ Do you know why HPD carries chihuahuas in their police cars? They are throw down dogs for the K9 team” These are the same cops that threw an illegal immigrant off a bridge over Buffalo Bayou after the jail wouldn’t take him since they’d beat him and the jail said take him to the hospital for care. So instead they threw him off the bridge and told him, “ swim wetback”. Trouble was these brilliant specimens forgot to take off their handcuffs and the poor bastard drowned. Yeah, Houston Cops in the late 70s and early 80s were really, really bad.

from watching dashcam channels might be because unless someone got injured or city property was damaged its a problem for insurance and not the police (at least in some states)
Their workload is through the roof because the crime rate is rocketing and they got funding cuts. Unless somebody was maimed or city property was damaged that wasn't the road surface, they won't do anything. They are also bureaucrats, so they are always inclined to do nothing in the first place

Seriously, he was stopped for driving without a license, trespassing at private airport, and some random traffic violation earlier that day? How many people's lives were nearly lost or severely messed up because they kept handing out warnings to the dude!
What makes less sense to me is that he was cited for driving with a suspended license. Then later in the day he was stopped for a traffic violation (presumably still driving), and they let him off with only a warning?

Generally speaking those other offenses wouldn’t show up because he hasn’t been convicted of anything hence nothing entered into the “system” there might be notes associated with his name but that requires a deeper search than what they do on a traffic stop. Basically they are checking to make sure the driver is licensed and no warrants and they are checking the car tags to make sure it’s insured, registered, and not wanted as far as active investigations go. However as with the human it might take a while for the info to hit they system

Got one of his vehicles impounded, so he decided to steal a plane, got stopped by police before the plane he wanted spawned in, so he took his second vehicle out for a spin and then decided, "F it, I'm gunna steal a vehicle and go on a crime spree and see how long I can last".

Modern cars are pretty tough. People bitch because the front end and plastic work and sheet metal will disintegrate like a KitKat bar and cost thousands of dollars to repair, but the passenger cabins are amazingly tough. There is a reason that modern cars feel like you are looking out of a bunker, huge thick pillars and small glass areas, high waistlines, etc. And he didn't really hit anyone that hard, they are designed to take freeway speed impacts (not that they will always survive but they do better than they did fifty years ago). In this case he probably never got over 35, and the impact wasn't direct, it rode over the patrol car and most of the impact went into the front suspension. I am more impressed but the fact that it _was_ still driving, and he was able to steer it out of the first location between two more cop cars.

I retired out of LE after 20 years, and the thing that always gets me about LAPD is there is always one officer barking orders at others right in the middle of the active situation causing people to loose focus of their AOR's. I couldn't work like that. Dude telling people to move their cars, look over here etc...meanwhile bad guy is neither contained nor neutralized yet.
Unless they're utterly stupid orders .*cough* Uvalde *cough*. they take alot of the responsibility off the officer and puts it in them. And it gets 10 officers acting like a team on one path instead 10 individuals with their own really cool plan.
