Such a unique song. After all these years I’ve never got the same vibe from another song. OC should be proud to still be performing this song 30 years later. 🙌🏽
I remember O.C. mentioning in an interview that one of his all time favorite records is “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick” so I’m not surprised that he put that “there time is limited hard rocks too” snippet from “Hey Young World” in there.
Thanks for pointing that out, Ashley! I never would have picked up on that otherwise.
I’ve always liked this song. Nice choice 😊✌️
"Fudge Pudge" is a Classic🏆
🔥
Organized Confusion
Thanks, Damon! It's def on my list. I haven't reacted to OK yet. Maybe this song will be my first.
My favorite O.C. track - My World 🙌🏽
Another great selection, Brian.
That song is popular enough (on my list) to be the next OC reaction.
Underrated 🐐💯
FINALLY
Just for you! 😁
I’m so glad you did this! One of the greatest songs of all time!
OC is one of my favorite underground emcees from the 90s. SUCH a great era for what some folks refer to as "backpack" rap. OC, Monche, RassKass, all the Rawkus cats, Last Emp, Canibus, Boot Camp... all favorites among us college kids.
Why is it called "backpack rap"? Because students like it?
@@ABoomerReacts I never quite understood the term, myself, though knew which rap it usually referred to: The good kind. Lol! I think it was a way for some to distinguish between the stuff "real ni&&as" listened to and what we, the book reading "cornballs," dug.
I think it has more to do with “backpackers” who were music obsessed hip hop heads who would dig through crates in music stores and carry vinyl in their backpacks. Alternatively it was also associated with graffiti writers who’d carry aerosol cas in backpacks. Somewhere along the way it became a mildly pejorative term for nerdy/underground rap. Not sure why the negative connotation tbh
@@palespectre4835 Ah, okay. All this makes perfect sense. Gracias.
Watching you even on my honeymoon BIG 💥 BOOM 💥. Good song 🎵 👌
Thanks! And congrats on the wedding. Don't make your wife hate me for taking up your time. 😜
Born 2 Live is another great single from the 1st album and My World produced by Premier on the 2nd album
Thanks, William! Both of those songs are on my list.
A 94 classic, a time when people realized this rap thing could go in the wrong direction shortly. Unfortunately, the bs ended up taking over despite warnings like this and Jeru's 'One Day' etc.
One the hardest diss records aimed at fake studio gangsters next to Jeru the Damaja’s “Come Clean”. I randomly met O.C. in my old neighbourhood in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in the late 90s. Very down to earth.
That's so cool! I like hearing that stuff about celebs.
O.C.‘s debut album is a classic. The title track “Word…Life” is one of the best tracks from the album.
Thanks! I'll add it to my list.
👍👍👍👍
"Gems along the way..."
^^ great encapsulation of what some rappers were trying to do. A genuine effort to provide a balance to the more violent and overly sexual stuff that we also liked as well (some people confuse criticism as hatred, but so be it). 🤷🏿♂️
this is a perfect example of great rhyming. just a good beat and dope lyrics, very sharp and focused lyrics. and the Slick Rick hook with scratching makes this an official boom bap Hip Hop record.
OC says it took him a year to write the lyrics for it. That's crazy! I've been hearing about the Slick Rick sample because viewers know that I like him so much. But I'm not good at picking samples yet.
yes, I'd heard about him taking a year to write it. We were really hype about this song when it came out. it was during the West coast rise and we, as NY's were very eager to hear some good NY shit. plus his use of language was refreshing, hip hop during that time were using a larger vocabulary, a lot more scientifical or "big" words were being used a lot. His first album was good but no major radio hits, but a decent album. @@ABoomerReacts
@@ABoomerReacts The scratch was from Slick Rick's " Hey young World" off his first album.
O.C. is underrated
Another banger from this album is 'Step into the O Zone', or 'Everydae' from the Starchild album featuring Pharoahe Monch on the hook. Great video mate!
Thank you! Everydae is already on my list and I'll add Step into the O Zone. My World seems to be a popular request.
@@ABoomerReacts dangerous with Big L, Win the G with Bumpy Knuckles etc etc etc etc!
Well since you asked, Time's Up does have a nice remix :)
The original is the famous version though so no worries. Definitely one of the more unique beats of the mid 90's, up to par with the likes of Come Clean or Tried By 12.
Fabian, don't scare me with that remix talk! 😂😂
This song is in my top 5 favorite hip-hop songs of all time list. Everything about it is perfect, My favorite Buckwild beats of all time as well. Glad you liked the track.
You're making up for lost time, indeed! I think you'd like a song called Tennessee by Arrested Development (a group way before the tv series). It's a lot different than the songs I've seen you react to so far and I think you'd dig it. Another enjoyable reaction on this solid track.
Thanks, Tom! Believe it or not, Tennessee is on my list. Your request made it much more likely for it to get a reaction.
Hey Brian, did you catch the Slick Rick sample? "They're time's limited, hard rocks too," is from "Hey Young World," which I think you reacted to a while back, yes?
I did react to it but I didn't catch the sample. I'm not too good at picking those out.
I always thought this was a DJ Premier beat - in fact I still do 😂 Even though I know he didn’t produce it
Do you think Prestige is lying about it? Or Buckwild?
This is an underground anthem and he was right at the end of the day about the state of music then. Also I didn't know you used to be into hip hop,I thought this channel was your introduction to rap.
I listened to rap in the 80's when it was fun and dance-y. I stopped in 1989.
@@ABoomerReacts I see good to know
Jadakiss ft natedogg "times up" is a must
Thanks! That song is def on my list. Is it the same song?
That's Slick Rick "Hey Young World on the hook...
More fun facts...
It's believed that 3 Rappers was "BlackBalled" bc of Nas Label
O.C, Mic Geronimo, and Ali Vegas was those rappers...
Oh The Order is from Least to Most....
Interesting! I don't have any Ali Vegas on my list but I have 2 for Mic Geronimo: The Natural and Shit's Real.
@@ABoomerReacts ok Shits Real was Me lol
It was the best 1 hit wonder of the 90s...
The Natural sounded jus like Nas So Columbia Records wouldn't allow that on their big investment over a independent so tried out bad for him. But he found Ja Rule so ig something good happened lol
And Ali Was The Most Lyrical Young Rapper EVER but he stole a Nas tactic and "Son"(Nas is called Son be many Queens Rappers. Never his government name lol) don't like competition 🤷🏾♂️
Btw Nas is my Goat so he can block anyone he want to me 😂😂
Ali Vegas "The Specialist"
17 year old sound not rap like that lol
O.C.’s debut may not be on Illmatic’s level, but it’s pretty close. Kinda crazy that Serch had a hand in both projects. Fudge Pudge is a great introduction to O.C. and Organized Konfusion.
It's def on my list.
I think he was criticizing the over-saturation of fake thug personas in the industry at the time moreso than just “gangsta rap” in general
I agree.
