When time comes you listen to more Big L and Lord Finesse solo projects you will notice the Finesse influence on Big L style and delivery .

    Rip big L. I strongly believe he would have gone mainstream and gone down as an all time great if he wasn’t murdered. His last album, the big picture, you could see he was poised to transition to more radio friendly songs while maintaining his high level of skill and charisma. His untimely death hurt so deep especially since we had already lost pac and big a few years prior. I was in high school when I heard about big L’s death. I was depressed for months from the news.

    • @ABoomerReacts
      @ABoomerReacts  2 года назад

      Is it your understanding that he was shot for payback concerning something his brother had done?

    • @staytus
      @staytus 2 года назад

      @@ABoomerReacts yea good question. So over the years I’ve heard different accounts. Sadly, and you may already know this, his murder was never solved so we never got the true explanation.
      From what I’ve learned, Big L and the people he surrounded himself with in his youth were not exactly law abiding citizens. Him, his brother, fellow rapper and fellow children of the corn member mcgruff (this was another group big l was affiliated with) were all rumored to be involved in drug trafficking.
      Apparently big l was trying to get away from that lifestyle and focus his energy on making music. But allegedly his brother never stopped. From what I remember, his brother goes to prison while big l continues on his music career. But prior to his brother going to prison, something went wrong in a drug deal between him and Dominican drug traffickers. And whatever that issue was, they were the ones who killed big l in retaliation.
      But then years later, another story started to make its rounds where Big L’s brother order the assassination of some dude. But that dude found out about it (not sure if he survived an attack or if he just caught word of it). He believed Big L was involved and so he murdered Big L.
      No clue if either story is the truth. There’s not much concrete proof one way or the other but those were the 2 stories I heard or read about over the years. And so as a very long answer to your question, yes it is my understanding his murder was related to something involving his brother who was in prison at the time.
      Edit: also just saw your Ebonics reaction. Great stuff!

    There were a lot of album releases that were delayed in the 90's. New groups or collaborations in the 80's and 90's often had 'proof of concept' singles to sell labels on the potential success of the album. If the single does well the artists will get funding to finish recording the rest of the project.
    Also, with artists doing solo projects as well, it's often the separate schedules and availability that delays the completion of a project (along with separate labels, contracts and managers that can delay the business of releasing an album).

    DITC are one of those prototypical crews that are virtually unknown by the larger public while being hugely influential in NYC hip hop.
    I don't think that was a promo single for the album..the way I remember it they released it as a 12'' and it just ended up on the album cause it had done well and was popular.
    You may have noticed that most NYC content you're reacting to features MCs from Brooklyn. DITC are mostly from the Bronx so they had a slightly different style.
    I actually kinda feel the same way about them as your reaction. They were always solid and very consistent but they rarely grabbed my attention the way other MCs did. There are still a couple of classic records waiting in their back catalog though if you ever choose to revisit them.
