This song takes me right to the Arrested Development Era 😁.. Tennessee anyone?
I've heard this song tons of times in and since 93 and this is actually the first time I've seen the lyrics. It reads like poetry but when it came came out, nobody knew what the hell they were talking about.
I have favorite songs and I never knew what they were about until I saw lyrics.
If u know about the 5% nation/nation of gods & earths this made alot of sense but alot of people don't understand the lyrics. This song is basically saying how cool they make hip hop.
@@twayz5244 People on here have told me just the basics of the 5% Nation
if you put it together you can kinda guess with the jazzy music and video its like a poetry session
Agreed. I actually like this song but never realized how well put together it was written
They did the video in a jazz lounge setting!
ATCQ, De la Soul, The Roots, etc. are pretty much in the same genre of jazz rap… a lot of college students vibe to this type of music.
It's too bad that the industry pushed gangsta rap over this style
That's what happened after this. The industry decided to push the most violent rap and groups like this were pushed to the side
That is correct. And it pushed me aside, too. I stopped listening.
@@ABoomerReacts An interesting group who this happend to was the black eyed peas. They decided to get a girl and go more commercial and only now are getting back to what they were. I think they were actually under Shug and were not trendy at the time for obvious reasons.
Their second album, Blowout Comb, is sooo sublime
Still one of my favs. 1st album I like, but they can seem like a bit of a novelty act. 2nd one they really pared down their approach, sounds more idk "mature" but not stodgy. "Refined" is a better term.
I always thought the production on the second album was better but not the lyrics
Definitely one of the best Hip-Hop records of All time! Good choice 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Guru's Jazzamataz series is a group of albums made by GURU of Gangstarr and DJ solar. They actually had great jazz artists like Herbie Hancock, Ronny Jordan, Winton Marcellous, Donald Byrd,Chaka Khan, Roy Ayers and others. Excellent, if I must say.
I've heard mention of that. Is it jazz + hip hop?
@@ABoomerReacts yessir
DJ Solar was only involved with the last Jazzmataz album if even at all. The first few installments of the series were way before that bastard solar came into the picture. Actually, his name shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Guru except to vilify him for what he did to Guru. But that's another story.
@@sebastienelkouby9699 That sounds like an interesting story, Sebastien. I hope to hear it one day.
@@ABoomerReacts indeed. It's an interesting but sad story about how manipulation and exploitation can lead to death.
Rebirth Of Slick was a blessing and a curse for them. This song was arguably more popular in mainstream pop culture than in hip hop. So when they won a Grammy they didn't really deserve (against classics like Nuthin But A G Thang), it didn't really help their career in the long-term. By the time their excellent second album came around, nobody in mainstream cultures cared anymore because jazzy hip hop had become less popular and the record lacked a bit hit. On the other side a lot of hip hop heads never gave the album a chance because they weren't taking them seriously.
Sometimes people say they were the blueprint for The Fugees with two rather average male MCs and a show-stealing woman but that's probably a coincidence.
I always love your history lessons, Fabian. Don't ever stop!
Oh, and no this wasn't the early stages of jazzy hip hop but rather its peak (which explains the Grammy).
It wasn't just hip hop either, there was a hugely popular movement called Acid Jazz in the UK that spawned influential groups like The Brand New Heavies, The Young Disciples or later on Jamiroquai.
The year Rebirth Of Slick came out a random jazz-rap from the UK called "Cantaloop" by an unkown group called Us3 somehow reached the top 10 on the US Billboard Top 100. So Digable Planets' sound was perfect for that era.
@@uamini Ah. So they were at the right place at the right time. Do you think that was deliberate? Or accidental?
@@ABoomerReacts Were they deliberately going for crossover success? No, I don't think so.
It was just a very common sound in NYC at the time and jazz records were a gold mine for great samples.
I'm not entirely sure why that song took off the way it did. Yes it was catchy, but they were also giving off a harmless vibe that White America was more willing to consume.
It's pretty ironic that their second album then featured references to political prisoners, Black Panthers and even Marxism...so basically the exact opposite of what gets you into suburban households. :)
@@uamini And that album was not as successful?
CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR ALBUM REACTIONS! A COUPLE OF CLASSIC ALBUM REACTIONS THAT YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IS: A TRIBE CALLED QUEST- "MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS", OUTKAST- "ATLiens", THE ROOTS- "THINGS FALL APART".✌
Thanks, Kaz! Maybe I'll do a poll.
Three musts...
This is my new favorite channel on RUclips. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you! I really appreciate your encouragement.
One of mine too!
One of hiphops best songs. Definitely one of the 90s best tunes. If you play this in a hiphop party or a jazz party it fits in. Prior to this A Tribe Called Quest had made "Jazz Rap" as well as a few others groups coming into the 1990s. Also of Course other hiphop records befire than had sampled from Jazz records in the 80s as well. I'm glad you reacted to this one
Me too. It's definitely a different song than what I'm used to on here.
Their second album Blowout Comb is a gotdang classic.
By the time this came out, jazz had become the go-to source of samples for the new generation of east coast producers, but Disable leaned into the whole jazz aesthetic more than most. Most producers would just take one element of a jazz record (horns, bass, keys) and put it overtop of a more traditional hip-hop beat.
I guess that's a product of working with what he had.
If you ever do an entire album The Low End Theory album is great consistency throughout and as for a concept album De La Soul is Dead is a fun ride. When you do individual songs it’s hard to get an idea of what it’s supposed to be. Pardon the tangent 😁✌️
No worries. I've been thinking of doing some album reactions I'll put The Low End Theory on the list. The other one on the list is Mmm FOOD by DOOM
@@ABoomerReacts yea DOOM is great an acquired taste even for Hiphop heads but if your into flows and eccentric music he’s up there. Either way we’ll be watching lol.
@A Boomer Reacts A COUPLE OF MORE CLASSIC ALBUM REACTIONS THAT YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IS: A TRIBE CALLED QUEST- "MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS", OUTKAST- "ATLiens", THE ROOTS- "THINGS FALL APART".✌
@@justkaz1985 Thanks, Kaz! Maybe I'll do a poll.
Will. I. Am was just with Talib and was saying that The Low End Theory was his favorite! They were talking about the whole Native Tongue collective
Love this song and the video perfectly matches the vibe
I enjoyed the video afterwards as well
Oh yeah! Pressing play immediately!
"9th Wonder" by Digable Planets
Thanks! I'll add it to my list.
Thanks for teleporting me back to my childhood. This one always gets me open. 😊
It's my boomer superpower.
Another dope Jazzy classic: A Tribe Called Quest's "Jazz (We got it)"
Thanks, Peter! That's def on my list. Bonita Applebum next week!
It's so jazzy. It takes me back. I love that song.
Music and memories go hand in hand
I bought the CD for this song and it's the only one I remember
This is the first hip-hop cassette I got when I was 13 back in 93… an amazing year to first fall in love with hip-hop ☝🏼🧡🇨🇦
The Golden Age. I was surprised to hear some viewers say that young hip hop fans now do not know a lot of these songs.
@@ABoomerReacts yeah I don’t know I don’t talk to a lot of people in their late teens or 20s.. my kid who is 11 is more familiar with hip hop from 82 to 2002 including stuff from 🇨🇦 because that’s what he hears at home and thinks the new stuff is Wack lol 😆.. i’ve watched quite a few of your videos and skimmed through the titles there’s still a lot of artist you haven’t checked out i’ll provide a list in chronological order if any of these names interest you get back to me and I will suggest a song title..the list ⬇️
Grand Master flash and the furious five
Run DMC
The Beastie Boys
Jungle Brothers
Ultramagnetic MC’s
Organized confusion
Kool Keith
Del the funky Homosapien
The hieroglyphics
Freestyle Fellowship
aceyalone
Myka9
Jurassic 5
Blackalicious/gift of gab
The rascalz
People under the stairs
Swollen members
Moka only
K-os
They have better songs on the album. I think this was easy to digest for a lot of people in a time when West Coast gangsta rap was on top ATCQ did the Jazz fusion better also Gurus Jazzmatazz series did a great job.
great song!!!
"Seven and a crescent" is another 5%er reference
Ladybug also with "down with the 5 Nat"
A Boomer reacts is (cool like dat)
Finally, someone noticed!
There were a lot of Jazz infused Hip Hop records from artists on the east coase from the mid 80s to early 90s.
Was there any jazzy hip hop from the west coast at all?
@@ABoomerReacts As far as the old school I could only think of The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief. I'm pretty sure there were more but those 2 groups were the most noticeable. West Coast has always been more heavy on the Funk sound.
@@Maleek_Bae Thanks, Maliki!
@@ABoomerReacts Btw there are 2 jazz/blues influenced records that Nas recorded that featured his father Olu Dara Jones who is a Jazz musician. The first one was “Life’s a bitch” featuring AZ which probably has been requested more than once. The second one is “Bridging The Gap” which was dedicated to his father and the genres of Jazz and the Blues.
@@Maleek_Bae Yes, Life's a Bitch is on my list. (That was a bar!)
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I luv me some digable planets and wish they stayed together longer and made more music. I prefer the tracks “time and space” and “escapism” from this album more than this track. They r an acquired taste tho. I like the jazz poetry vibe and their version of it. It just stands out to me so it never gets old. N I can enjoy them as a casual listen when I’m not really focusing on lyrics or on a deeper listen to try to decipher it
I have plenty of songs that work like that for me.
YAS LAWD!!!!!
do nujabes-feather
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll add it to my list.
Future reference whippersnapper could be considered insensitive nowadays.
But DPs are dope
Interesting. Tell me why "whippersnapper" could be considered insensitive.
Wait he said what-able planets, lol. This man can say "dig" just fine, but every time he says digable the 'g'' sounds like a hard 'k' ;)
I think I just created a new word for an acceptable sex partner.
This album is so smooth, I always considered it as a masterpiece. Do you plan to react to others DG songs?
Pacifics (from the soundtrack N-Y is red hot)
Jimmy diggin' cats
It's good to be here
Escapism
Nickel bags
are really good songs, and you should listen to La femme fetal, spoken words (à la Last Poets) that is treating a touchy subject, still relevant today.
OH and 9th Wonder (Blackitolism) is one of my favorite tracks ever.
Thanks, Frederic! I'll add them to my list. (Nickel Bags was already on it)
My homies made fun of me because I actually liked this lol it was at the time of New York thugged out hip hop.
The song is now considered to be a classic so I guess you got the last laugh.
It’s not the same vibe as watching the actual video!😇
I watch all the official videos after I stop filming.
Binary Star- Honest Expressions
Thanks for the suggestion. The only Binary Star song on my list was Reality Check.
You should react to Drake, i dont really like his style or songs but he has some good like ”Headlines” or ”Gods plan”. Also hes one of the, if not the most popular rapper last years
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll add them to my list.
