Why is there chocolate sauce in the Range Rover gearbox? - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 19

- The day has finally come, our 1986 Range Rover is finally going to get clean. But will it make a difference, will we be able to tell at all with all that rust and peeling paint? Will the car still be carbon neutral if we wash off all the vegetation? Will it fall apart if we remove all the cobwebs? Will it simply dissolve when the water hits it? Well, we're about to find out. Surely, now it runs and it's clean, it will be ready for its MoT test. Or will we find something else that needs to be fixed first?...
Edd China's Workshop Diaries 19: Wash day for the Range Rover (Flushing out the Range Rover gearbox, should the transmission fluid really look like chocolate sauce?)

Dave's idea to use the jack was clever, Edd giving him credit for it was pure class.
Dave is this episode's MVP!
Dave's close-ups are also second to none. Credit where credit's due!

This is quickly becoming the very best of wheeler dealers. I've learned so much from watching Edd over the years, it's great to be in school again.
And therein lies the trouble and the rumble between the "grease monkey", Edd, and the slick, high speed jacket wearing, car salesman. FR
Two different shows, enjoy them both. I'd rather have more car shows than less in this day and age.
Good to see Ed running into problems such as stripped bolts like the rest of us and how he deals with it!
@@taxidude And Ed crediting the solution was also a good thing, a lot of " TV Mechanics" would not have done that and it is something to bear in mind when dealing with a mashed set of bolts
@@taxidude A tool that should be in everyone's box is the Spring Loaded Impact that you strike with a hammer. When you hit it, it jars and twists the fastener loose.
Edd was the best part of wheeler dealers and I’m glad to see him still doing what he is so skilled at. Thanks Edd! New subscriber!
I cringed every time the other guy was on, I just wanted to kick the screen in because he ruined that show.
while i agree, Edd and Mike were and always will be wheeler dealers to me, I won't discredit Ant as he is an excellent craftsman.
Same! Great to see you doing awesomely well!!!
Towards the end, Mike Brewer was really annoying, especially when he pretended to be hands on. Edd made the show
Mick and Edd where a good time, lol
Ed not being disturbed by Mike or TV format is pure gold. Thanks for coming back
Edd is becoming, and his show along with him, very zen.
Yes I agree, I really like the pace and his gentle laughter here and there which shows he's really relaxed which makes for enjoyable viewing.

@@ianmangham4570 it’s certainly not ‘zen’😂
Zen, leave off.
Love how you go into detail, and show the work involved. It's not all about showing the "money shots" and et voila it's done. Save that for the America audience...Us Brits like the nitty gritty details, keeping it real...
And we swedes too!!
Hate to break this to you, but most of the American audience also wants detail and explanation. Just because lazy producers decided to take the easy route doesn't mean the audience wanted that. I've been waiting years for Edd to return with his level of detail. That he now gets to do it his way, without being weighed down by the (apparently still) butthurt Mr. Brewer, makes it even better.
We Yanks love the details too! It’s only the networks that dumb things down!
You obviously underestimate the American audience, @Area 67, but do go on about "keeping it real".
I'd say it's more the network that want the programme to appeal to more viewers not people who are really into cars. I'm not American but it's not the American fans fault.
As an old-school mechanic I really appreciate Edd's practical approach to problems instead of just throwing silly money at everything. Not everyone has $100K+ and immaculate workshops to throw at "barn finds" like some Yanks do on YT.
Corrosion and busted screws always challenge, but pressure and torque win in the end.
Wonderful to see this truly remarkably talented professional doing what he doe so well. Thank you Edd for the countless hours of entertainment you have given us all these years.
I don't want these episodes to end. I could watch this all night!
Yeah I agree JJ, I could easily have watched the next instalment back to back too.
The production quality of 'the wash' was exceptional.
😂
WD Edd should've done the underside with WD - WD40.
I used a pressure washer on my car once... went straight through the wheel arch.
Made light (er) work for you rhen !
It did go on a bit too long though. There is only so much slow motion jet wash actin I can handle.
Always good to see your work and presentation. Thanks Mr.China
I’m a mechanic for 40 years But this guy come with some Ideas that I never saw before! I’m glad I found this guy in RUclips after he left Wheel dealer
The camera work, editing and production (and the presenting, of course...) is really professional - as good as, if not better than, much of what I watch on TV.
true
TBH, I was pretty sure Edd's long history with the British public and TV folks would raise a crew of "awesome help". The folks that "let Edd go" might well sharpen their pencils and open a fresh page in their notebooks- Edd is going to teach this lesson his way, after all! FR
There aren't many YT channels with this quality of production. These episodes are extremely well mixed
Have you checked the radiator for transmission fluid
Agree, Nick. Dave and the crew are doing a great job with the cinematography.
Can't see why people are getting the arse over the mini stuff. It's an interesting project and as worthy of Edd's time as any other. He said at the start that this channel won't be focusing purely on one thing be it cars, bikes, boats, tractors or what have you. No reason for people to start complaining because they aren't interested in one particular project.
Well said. I agree with you completely.
People asked for me in depth videos then complained when they got them. I don't understand it at all
Totally agree, I had no interest in Minis but do now.
Too many You Tube Experts really want control of content- although I have thrown down my YT E card, I insist only on stating my opinion, freely and for free. I even admit I have been wrong once, maybe, possibly, could have been twice, but to go on; Edd is no "newbie" so I expect he will sort the chaff from the wheat and do as he thinks best, while trying to keep the nay sayers from realizing he has a perfectly constructed "shelf" to keep them on. FR
@@richardporter6201 I prefer classic Minis to BMW minis any day.
This is why i like Edd, he gave credit to the camera man for the idea about using the jack to get better purchase on the bolt. What a nice guy he is, i love watching this guy fixing and repairing older vehicles. I would never purchase a range rover cos they are a bit crap but I do like seeing them being worked on . Thank you so much :)
I miss you so much on tv my dear Edd. You were the best of the show without any doubt. I want to send you a very big hug from Spain, hopping you are ok, and wishing you all the best for 2023. Thanks for being here mate.
Whoever came up with the bit and filmed it in such a brilliant way of Edd lifting the vehicle deserves an award.
This is gold, I really like Edd, it's great to see him worming again and now he is in control of the content it's better.

Yeah, the fake chemistry always got me.
Even when brewer nipped off to his 'mate' who just happened to own a shop which just happened to specialise in repairing the most obscure object.
That said, I picked up the odd bit of info from the English shows.
A mate has a moggy traveller with the infamous rotten woodwork and I remembered Mike getting a full kit from a place in wales.

That's one of the reasons I don't watch TV anymore. As the drama quotient increased I watched less and less, until it finally hit every genre I watched. Now I watch RUclips and I learn a lot more as a bonus.
The TV and movie industry shot themselves in the foot.
Very inspiring to service own car! Thank You Edd China!
Just discovered Ed’s channel ………….. multi pack of crisps, 12 bottles of beer locked an loaded for binge watch here I come!!
Was anyone else expecting that crossmember to not go back in place so Edd then breaks out a massive hydraulic ram to separate the chassis a teensy bit… (trick up his sleeve)
Another top quality episode Edd, thankyou!
When he was taking it off I thought the 2nd nut was falling in his brew
If you look closely you can actually see the carlift directly on those chassis beams basically pushing them outwards horizontally a bit with the weight of the car resting on it. So I sorta already knew when he said it that sliding the crossmember back in wouldn't be a problem.
Having done the same job myself, I can assure that you can hammer-slide a bit forward the cross member in order to remove the pan, it doesn't have to be dropped off the chassis.
I was actually planning to, it was almost a bit disappointing when it cooperated…
Back in the days of Wheeler Dealers I loved the workshop bits where you were always explaining almost everything you would do.
Of course each episode of wheeler dealers was 45 minutes in total, but 40 minutes of only wrenching on cars and a bit Q&A inbetween is all i ever wanted.
Thanks Edd
A genuine pleasure watch and listen to Edd in action again. I love that you also showcase the damaged / stuck bolts --which are far too often a dreadful time sucking nightmare.
I spent many hours battling with bolts and nuts when the manual said "unbolt and remove"
WTF???.
im not even into fixing crs but i just love Edds style and presentation ,his segments were always the highlight of wheeler dealers
Brilliant episode Edd & team - I really enjoyed this one. Those mashed torx bolts are just the kind of thing us home-mechanics face every weekend, turning 30 minute jobs into 3 hour jobs. Nifty solution suggested by Dave too - which definitely deserved a brew & biscuit... 👍
Too much effort IMHO. I would have "ghetto flushed" it by pulling trans cooler line off and letting engine pump the fluid out for me, no lift required.
@@godblesshamas Where's the fun in that?
Just feels right to be watching Edd playing with cars again. Happy days.
Hi, Edd, my name is Sergey, I am 34 years old, I live in Russia, and the only thing I watch on TV is the Wheeler Dealers program, where you repair cars, you do it divinely, explain everything in an accessible and understandable way with the help of your videos, I learned how to fix most of the breakdowns in the car, and now I have found your channel on You Tube, I subscribed to your channel and look forward to every new video with pleasure and impatience!!!
As an ex aircraft engineer , there are a few products in our industry that might be useful , ie jointing compounds for dissimilar metals that you may not be aware of, you just used standard grease when you were re assembling the mini rear end whilst discussing the potential reaction between steel /aluminum and copper as I recall, in aviation we always use specific compounds to minimise the reactions between dissimilar metals.
Also , another aviation trick when dealing with possible structure structure movement as you mentioned when dropping the transmission oil on the old Range Rover , we use a thing called a jury strut , much like builders use when installing a Lintel to prevent any movement. I think they call them floor or accrow props, but the same idea , rig something up under a little tension to prevent movement.
You are way more experienced than me, but thought these might be worth mentioning to viewers , PS love the show !!
You always have me at “welcome to the workshop” 🤣. Loving all you do Edd, fantastic!
Worst bit of the video is when Edd says “but that is for another day” 😄

Good to see that Mike Brewer still gets a mention from time to time, "this is where the little dipstick goes"
😂😂

@@ArrghhMatey Why am I still on about what?

@@ArrghhMatey oh god, better get you a freezer incase you melt
This is why I like Edd and old Wheeler Dealers. Simple DIY fixes like using the trolley jack to create extra pressure, things that any home mechanic has access to it. Credit to Dave the camera man too!
Watching fabricators at work has it's appeal of course, and you can admire their skill, but at the same time it's a far cry from the sort of thing most of us can do over a weekend.
For rounded torx, philips, pozidrive etc my favourite tool is the manual impact driver. The old school type you hit with a hammer and its cammed so it rotates slightly.
Kind of the same idea as the jack trick which also worked a treat.
Will hopefully remember this for a time i dont have an impact available.
For rounded internal hex screws (unbrako/allen) its often possible to hammer in a slightly bigger torx bit. Usually works better than dedicated extractor bits. Although for external hex bolts and tall cylindrical allen screw heads the extractor sockets are great.
Anyway those are just some tips which might come in handy for anyone unfamiliar with them. But nothing new to a lot of hobbyists and pros out there including, i'm sure Edd as well.
Excellent videos Edd and the rest of the crew. Just stumbled over this after not having watched wheeler dealers for years now, and i really like the production and presentation of this new show as a whole. Thanks a lot and wish you all the best!
There's a couple of additional friction enhancing tips: one is to take a torx tip and grind the end square (like a pin punch) or even slightly hollow (like a wobble broach) so the sharp corners broach into the fillet radii at the bottom of the female recess when the axial force is applied generously,
and the other is to put some tungsten carbide grit in the recess. If you put this together with what Edd did (and didn't) try:
1) Some heat and penetrating oil (or better still, beeswax in conjunction with heat) *before* beginning (and before the recess gets further damaged)
2) Inexorable axial force (thanks, Dave!) _ideally with an overlay of axial vibration, but it's important that this is not at the expense of maintaining a high axial force even at the lowest point in each cycle of vibration, and this would take some arranging._
_The old school impact driver (as Hamring suggests) has a lot of merit if you can lay your hands on one - you'll need to source a 1/4" hex impact socket for it if you need use any torx or other specialised bit in it_
3) Sharp ended driver bit (if torx)
4) Tungsten carbide grit
you're giving yourself the best chance of success
There is one more step if dealing with potential galling, eg stainless steel male/female thread pairing: Whenever a tiny rotation is made in the loosening direction, reverse the turning force and retighten before seeking a further tiny movement . This cannot be hurried, and in this case, use cooling, not heat.
The time to take action against galling is before it starts.
If all else fails, TIG (if it's available) is a better bet than MIG.
@@Gottenhimfella Brilliantly detailed supplement! 😄 Broachifying the bit i will definitely try out next time!
Edd, thx for the video. You teaching is quite valuable
Way back in 1983 my old beauty did a huge 8mpg but would tow anything and carry any load I threw into her. She never got stuck, never broke down and was a gem in the snow!
