The Vera Placemat - Free Crochet Pattern

Hello! My name is Kim and a warm welcome to my corner of happiness!!
This placemat gets it's texture from a half double crochet that is worked into the front loop and back loop on repeat. I have divided 4 rows of this unique texture with a row of single crochets. These elements make for a versatile, quick, and easy design that is suitable for every home. It's as easy as picking your favorite color or a color that coordinates with the themes of your home!

If you begin and end each row with a single crochet (or half double crochet) going through BOTH loops, your sides will be straight and you’ll not need to crochet a border. Great pattern, thanks for sharing.

I don't quite understand the first row. You said to SC into the 3rd loop of the chain, but then you said the 2nd chain from the hook. Does the loop on the hook count?
