Some tips beyond slings: You definitely want to use the different fighting styles when it's advantageous to do so! Sometimes this means you can disengage right after the first attack against you (evasive fighting) or avoid damage (defensive fighting). You also want to use your will and story points whenever possible. Will points reset after every battle so make use of them! Positioning is super important. You want to try to pick off enemies alone, back them against walls so that you can force combats when you're surrounding their model (they don't disengage after 3 rounds if they can't back away). Also, make use of higher ground if possible. Jump on crates or whatever to gain counterattack, which makes it so you wound your enemy even when you're not the aggressor. I love seeing these Battle Reports because 5L is a mechanically complex game. Combat has a lot of steps and nuance!
yeaaaah, i think the thing to respect here is that this game is closer to infinity in terms of character fragility and picking fights. it's a lot easier to die than other systems
I think Ash's observation at the end is correct: All the freedom in picking models and setting feels somewhat at odds with the tactical and brutal combat that forces you to play a certain way. It's not an insurmountable problem but it does practically guarantee an initial experience that goes so hilariously wrong it could easily be not fun.
Just a note on the action around 4:15. You can only move 1/2 you move (normally 2") if you are shooting a bow and if you do move you don't get to use you combat bonus when shooting. You need a special quest skill or be a feral to shoot and full move. With a crossbow you are not allowed to move and shoot. At 16:09, you only stun the target on Overcome armor roll if it is equal to the armor. If the roll is lower than the armor rating nothing happens ("attack fails").
Watching us play this game is the gaming equivalent of watching an America's Funniest Home Video montage of a guy getting endlessly hit in the nuts with some kind of sports ball ⚾🥎🏈⚽
Really loving this playthrough series-hope you guys don't get discouraged and keep going! Great showcase of the system as well-this series helped make up my mind to go out and grab it!
You don't appreciate how forgiving the D20 system of Rangers of Shadow Deep is until you play Five Leagues! With the neat three roll system, combat feels a bit more dynamic (it actually reminds me of the Insult Sword Fighting from Monkey Island) but boy is it more punishing!
Oh my. Brutal. Seems you need a party that have been on adventures before you start adventuring - slow, stupid and dead ain't no way to go through life.
Deadly encounter, hunters hunted!

You can hear how Jay can't even keep a straight face when talking about the future prospects of his newest warband member lol
I love how brutal this game has turned out to be.
The worse things get for the adventurers, the better the game is to watch. 😄😄😄

If you're going to call them the Civic Minded Five you must have The Carpeted man

This is brutal. Someone needs to put a warning sign by the entrance to the Five Finger Mountains 😂
Brutal. Absolutely loved this, best video yet.
This is what it looks when a train wrecks by going over a cliff into a dumpster fire...
This was pain but I appreciate you not going easy on yourself. idk if you plan to continue this series but I think its pretty rad
I enjoy watching almost all games you play.
But I am really enjoying this series.
Ah, another trip to Murphy's Mountains, I see.

Have you thought about playing Five Parsecs from Home? This has been so much fun to watch, and I think Five Parsecs would be just as entertaining.
"Road Kobolds!"🤣
Robolds if you will.
I had to stop and post that this has been the most hilarious series. This has to be my favorite even above the English vs Spanish hijinks.
What a great series! I just ordered the 5L book. Cant wait to get into this.

Well, that was a spirit breaker.
Some losses are too tough to bear 😭
This just gets worse and worse. 👍❤️
Your warbands lives
No Penelope!!!
This is brutal, but I'm enjoying it.

Runaway! But bravely! 🤣
I mean i had fun and would like to see more of this but it feels like you two maybe should restart the campaign.
Brutal
@Guerrilla Miniature Games, did you cancel Five leagues from the Borderlands or is there a Possibility for Future parts.
So funny!
Well...
Its just a comedy of errors....you must keep pushing forward! Maybe you'll get a safe escort quest and not be waylaid.
