I'm literally 15 and my grandparents use this fucking app, it gave me more stress after they downloaded app, when I try to vent or talk with my friends, my grandparents always block my phone in random times. And for example, if you have android, on the lock screen there is only one icon for 'contacts' when I try to call my parents this mf comes up: "time for a break, your parents have locked this device" like what if you're in an CAR accident? How are you able to call your parents? I know my opinion might sucks but ok..

It only works up to age 13, if I remember correctly. There are other apps, though.

As someone who has been controlled by family until the age of 13, I hated every single second. I was restricted so much. And remember - the stricter the parents, the sneaker the kids. I managed to watch RUclips, search questionable stuff, and even start a RUclips channel.
If I ever have kids, I will rather talk to them and talk about their screen time than trust an app that damaged me.
Trust me, 100%, your kids won't listen to your "talks" about screen time. It's not entirely their fault: the internet aggressively attempts to get eyeballs on screens and kids aren't equipped to navigate that alone. The internet is also a cesspool and most parents are just trying to protect you from the stuff you should not be viewing, and to help you set healthy life-long screen/technology habits.
If you interpret that as controlling and causing damage, that's a real shame. But please give your parents the benefit of considering that they are trying to do the right thing in a very new and wild age of technology.
Personally I'm a child of the 80s and my parents really only had to intervene about television - there were no computers at home and certainly no internet. There was limited ability for me to be exposed to things that were completely inappropriate for my age. Of course I wasn't completely naive, I saw nude magazines and such, but on a scale absolutely dwarfed by what is readily available on the internet now.

When I was just a little kid controlled by it, I didn't learn how to manage healthy screentime without it feeling like a chore, so the second I no longer was monitored by family link, my screen time immediately skyrocketed and I was spending hours upon hours a day just to "compensate "
Yo my phone locked at night, and in the morning my mom tried unlocking it and it wouldnt work. My location told my mom that I was two towns over. Messed up app. Hate it, sorry but until they fix it, I will hate it.

My parents set up family link so I can have a Gmail account and they just signed in on my phone when they gave it to me. Now I can’t download text now and WhatsApp to talk to my friends
I feel bad, kids like RUclips and Play Games. They shouldn’t get RUclips kids and no Play games. I would choose Apple instead of Google. They just limit it like they think kids shouldn’t play games or watch RUclips and have locked apps. Then, WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE PHONE?! See, there is no point.

I bought Kaspersky year ago after investigating Family Link and I see that nothing has changed. What a disappointment from Google.
if you have a computer, you can just use ADB to remove the app time limit should be gone afaik
you can also enter recovery mode on boot and just wipe everything and start anew. it varies between manufacturers, but usually it's a power key and a volume key held at the same time

Just before watching this, I saw an ad for Rope Spider Swinger or something, featuring Spiderman but yellow. Google can't be arsed to take blatant copyright infringement off their store, or ads for it off their platform. They also let games get away with breaking the law by not offering refunds if you refuse to agree to their illegal ToS.

I'm honestly sick and tired of Google. They try to come off as socially responsible when, in fact, they are among the worst companies out there. There attitude towards customers, creators etc is absolutely indefensible. Just yesterday I tried to contact them over an ongoing issue where subscribers don't seem to be seeing my videos (I have fewer than 1% or views coming from subs), but all I got was a generic, automated response that literally had nothing to do with my question.
If someone could come up with a viable alternative to RUclips, I'd jump ship in a heartbeat.
@@JoeChip Yep. They're immoral and astounding cheap and lazy for one of the most powerful companies in the world. People see illegal and objectively false ads all the time. There's not even a token nod to customer support. I dearly hope the inevitable end of all corporations claims them soon when their sloth allows someone else to do it better (and provides an opportunity for more competition for others in their rise).
I agree. I would honestly like to see the end of Google. They are so bad I’m even considering a return to Apple for my next phone and that was something I never thought I’d say.

Completly absolutly horrid. Horrendous. I’ve never been so aggravated… I have 4 children and it was so unhelpful, basically days of hell dealing with all the BS… they couldn’t do anything….I spent hours trying to get them games, media, apps etc… a billion codes, passwords…. Unusable. Now both the kids laptops that they also do schoolwork on are locked out….. after I deleted family link… still asking for a parental control code on the main screen so I’m locked out of both laptops… don’t have the codes anymore… there is a help box… I click it and it’s a blank screen with no words…. Can’t even contact google on them cause can’t get off that screen… worst thing I could of ever done…. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

The biggest problem I had was that I couldn't get in touch with then to get it sorted out and the help forum hadn't had an answer from Google in years. Terrible customer service.

I hate family link, the worst part is that when u turn 13 ur parents either force u to click Keep Supervision OR make ur age younger than 13 every single time it's so horrible, and btw have dealt with a family link it was terrible I always have to get my parents permission from apps even tho the apps r for my age, like if the apps r like 1% chatting or 1% multiplayer he will not accept it

In Greece it works until 15 and I am 14,5 and I have it it's soo annoying I can't disable it until I'm 15 and I'm turning 15 at October. I have a day limit 2 hours, bedtime from 9pm to 10am that is the most annoying part and when I go to the play store I can't download anything because it says that I need to ask a parent, so I only have 2 games on my phone and each of them 5 minutes app limit. An other annoying thing is as you said we don't have Google play, so I can't save my progress. Also we don't have freedom and privacy if we must ask our parent for everything, and if our parents can see our location. Also when I go to a friend and I take my phone there I feel really embarrassed when my phone locks because I'm a teenager and my friends don't have this trash so I feel uncomfortable when my phone locks. Family link sucks and I hope it will be banned.

Truth. We fully agree... two years later.
The main issue is that the software is shit, i.e. it has limited functionality and it's a real dog's breakfast trying to police what is or is not allowed across your Google ecosystem. For example the Chrome controls work well for internet browsing, but it's a complete shitstorm trying to manage any content on a Google Hub - the device simply ignores my kids, or isn't smart enough to do things like blocking youtube videos whilst still allowing youtube music.
Underneath all this, as noted in the video, Google sets universal policies that will simply never meet the complicated needs of varied families. It's often difficult to figure out what these policies are. It either needs to be highly flexible, or you just delete the whole thing.

My friend has this app and i can feel the pain, like all the apps are blocked even google drive, gmail and whatsapp, and she cant have contact with people on the phone's calling app because she cannot pay the fee, and also the google drive and gmail apps are for her projects and she cant use them while they are blocked, imagine there is an emergency situation and you need to communicate with someone but you cannot because of family link, that could cause deaths, right? Also people say family link saves lives but she showed the location feature and it was not even the right location, it didn't show the location of her house, just an random location of somewhere nearby, so the location can be innaccurate many times, that makes the argument of the app saving lives complicated.

Made the family link for my brother, thought it would help, he can't log in in his tablet anymore, can't play brawl stars using his account even on another devices, I can't remove him from family link, can't change his age, this thing is garbage to the core
I think they updated it now where you can change the account. If it still doesn't work for you try and change the birthday to make it over 13 yrs old.

Is this video out of date? We’ve just set up family link and my daughter can access loads of games and apps, she just has to send a quick permission request to us. It serves its purpose in keeping kids safe online perfectly well so far as I can tell
Glad it's working for you. Unfortunately it's very hit and miss. I know people who've had no real issues, while others have run into all sorts of trouble. Sometimes both scenarios occur in the same family. That's why it's so annoying. You can't really know whether it's going to work or not and Google are less than helpful.

to all kids who suffer under family link: you can get rid of it without parent password and it doesn’t notify them! Its called a hard reset, you can look it up. ONLY DO IT IF YOU ARE OK WITH LOSING ALL YOUR DATA!!

When I got a $10 gift card for Google play, I had to verificate some things and when I got login, it didn't work. That's why family link Can be garbage

still no solution in 2023... I am above 13 on my account birthday and in real life and yet it doesnt let me delete the account from family link so i think im stuck with this... unless i want to delete my whole email which i dont... i have been using an alt email for probably 3 years now....
Not only is it crap and useless but it's almost impossible to completely scrub it from devices. I thought I had deleted it from everything. But my kids Chromebook was still restricting her. Had to factory reset. But we're still having problems with our accounts in RUclips music.🤬

familylink keeps requiring me to double authenticate even though ticked the box saying she can log in. so sometimes she cant do her homework unless i drop everything an come log her in. its infuriating. i dont have any of this trouble with apple.
If anybody wants to take it off try to uninstall it. Then it will say app cannot be unistalled. Press that then it will take you to a place that Says stop permission. Press that so you can take it off. But in return you can't use your phone for 24 hours. After 24 hours u got ur phone back.

I think the same way too. Literally I was playing Roblox shinobi storm when my dad said im gonna lock ur phone cuz of ur eyes and stuff. After that I found his password so my phone got unlocked. He changed his password and then bocked Roblox. Also I feel like Google developers are brainless like they cant even responde to someone question. I wish I could become a hacker and hack this app. Also this dosent even have to do with links. Also the location is wrong. 1 person said that he/she was at school and his/her dad was asking him/her why was she/he at a train station

Don’t we all. I took it off my kid’s phone completely as it gave control to Google not to me. I’m pretty liberal with my lad and he’s pretty sensible, so it has all worked pretty well, so far.
when i had family link i couldn't download a harmless strategy game but then i tried to DOWNLOAD A HOROR GAME THAT COULD LITERARY GIVE A YOUNG KID NIGHTMARES AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!

Not only can't make you download any apps, you also have to ask your parents if you want to make your account. At first before my dad set this garbage on my phone, I looked at the reviews and wondering why it was rated 1 star. And after got set up, now I know why teens rate it 1 star and I agree with these 1 star review.
