That Grim Reaper fight was intense
Me watching his strategy to beat Death, thinking I can replicate it. Then me playing it. A sickle instead of appearing in the far right, spawns right on top of my head, kills ever one of my attempts.

GG's for this one Mike. With regards to the no sound on stage one, I get that too only if I allow the title screen to go into the preview gaming. Then there is no music until the boss fight with the bat.

I've been playing NES alot lately finally picked up a couple crt's
The knight takes 9 hits. 9 FUCKING HITS! You can't even concentrate on attacking them because you're too busy dodging Medusa's, but you can't dodge the medusa's because you're too busy dodging the axes, but you can't dodge the axes because you're trying to hit the knight, but you can't hit the knight because the game's driving you fucking crazy! It's like a test. A test to the SHIT!

Did you ever do the leather whip only? That’s like the greatest thing I’ve ever seen attempted for the nes to me. My mind is blown away by how fine of a game this is just like when it came out!

I am stuck at the Grim Reaper :( That hallway before him is BRUTAL and I never get to him without some health down already. Mike makes it look pretty simple but I know that's from a lot of practice & hard work. This time was something special though, that was awesome! I am gonna have to try that! Nothing to do but keep plugging away...I am gonna beat this shit one day!

Get the holy water for that hallway.
I always use the "Boomerang" but even then I don't utilize it properly. I know my weakness is not being efficient with the secondary weapons. I'd say I do things 95% whip only most of the time, which I gotta move past as it's not getting me beyond the reaper.
Holy Water is good on the Knights and you can spam holy water on Death in the middle of the room for a quick kill.
@@mikematei So true on the Holy Water comment. Oh Mike. Did you every get a chance to read. "The life and times of Scrooge McDuck"? It was a 12 part mini series of scrooge going from a kid until he got his money bin. Done by Don Rosa. It came out in the late 90s as I was lucky enough to read them as my pops was a huge fan. They have the set in a hard copy book like the ones you showed us on the bionic comando stream last week. It even won some awards. I remember it was top notch back then.
The knights also have a really specific pattern. They throw 2 axes high, and 1 low. Once you get a handle on their pattern, they're way easier to handle.
You can also push them back by just advancing and when you reach Grimmy's platform they just disappear

if you just want to do sprite swap hacks, the hardest part is usually just drawing the sprites. for most of the most popular games there are tools that will let you easily swap out graphics, and there are some generalized tools like YY-CHR that work for alot of games.
anyone who recommended blue is a casual musha player. orange bro. level 3 causes collateral spread damage and level 4 creates little black holes that suck enemies in.
"The complete life and times of scrooge McDuck" by Don Rosa. Have your read that one mike? It from when scrooge McDuck was a kid to where he gets his money bin. Was a 12 part mini series done in the late 90s. They have hardbound books of it like the ones you showed im your bionic commando play through last week. Great mini series. I see it got some awards as well. I was lucky enough to read them as they were coking out due to my Pops getting them as he was a big fan of them as well.
As a young lad I traded Excite Bike for Castlevania. My friend never got his game back.

Mike congrats, I love watching your Castlevania streams.
These are my 13 (exactly, 13) suggestions for new possible challenges:
1. items (or just crosses) only (you can/cannot farm hearts with the whip before bosses). If crosses: don't lose them or reset.
2. if you get hit, don't hit enemies until the end of the room (except for bosses). Maybe force yourself to a limited number of continues?
3. avoid killing a certain type of enemies (I don't know, all the flying ones? Or those on the ground? Or the undead ones?), you can only jump/dodge them. If you hit them by mistake, do not reset, just die and carry on.
4. you can only jump/avoid all the enemies, except for bosses (you choose how to beat them). Die and carry on if you make a mistake.
5. do not crouch down to dodge/hit enemies
6. no jumps at all, except when strictly necessary to beat the level
7. no hits taken from bosses
8. do not fall OR do not die if enemies hit you
9. no deaths at all OR no hits at all (might be almost impossible)
10. no whip/items while on stairs
11. no pork chops
12. survive in the boss rooms for 30 sec or one minute before start killing the boss
13. you can only hit enemies in rooms with odd or even numbers (except for bosses)

You should do this challenge with a few other games in the series. 3, 4, and Sotn would be good too!

I actually didnt know that tip - if you will hit enemies 10 times with sub weapon the next random drop candle will drop double shot power up. Same goes if you already have one - first random drop candle will drop III shot power up. With this the game is much much easier.
So Ive been trying something... "fun": Beating Adventure of Link without dying. Ive done a lot of self imposed challenges in video games. This is, by far, the most difficult of them. Ive gotten really good at it. but 99% of the time now I die in the path leading to the final palace.

Watching this reminds me of when i was a kid trying to beat the Grim Reaper with just the whip and the boomerang when i could get it. Shit frustrated me so much i ended up calling Konami to ask how to beat him and thats when they told me about the fire bomb trick.
Great job on the whip only challenge! Castlevania is my second top NES game after Zelda. Followed by DuckTales and Musha, awesome stream.

He should definitely do Super Castlevania IV whip only. Then Bloodlines afterwards.
Just my 2 pennies, but the challenge of this is not using the subweapons to one's advantage. Therefore it should be allowed to waste the subweapons throwing them at nothing so you can't accidentally use them on enemies.

Castlevania as a series has the best music. I mean, what else is there? Zelda has pretty good music as does megaman, but I think good old CV has them both beat. Obviously there are newer games with great soundtracks, but I am talking a long running series that started with beeps and boops.
