    You (and everyone who watches Utena) really should read Vraikaiser's blog posts about Utena. She really goes in depth into what's going on and the symbolism, which really helped me when I watched it. (Except it's very spoilery, so newbies beware) For example, she exaplains that Dios dies because he cannot physically help every single girl ever be a princess, the weight of this responsibilty becomes toxic to him (a metaphor for the idea of toxic masculinity) and Anthy has to save him. By doing this, Anthy gives up her right to be a princess, making her a witch, which goes back to the virgin/whore dicotomey (let's pretend I spelled that right.). This is why Utena is seen as so weird in this world since her goal is to be a prince, whoch is obviously not a princess or a witch. I love this show so much and I really think everyone who watches the show and is confused should read Vrai's blog.

      Many people think of the movie as Anthy's journey to find Utena. In the movie, Anthy takes a lot more of a powerful role and Dio is nearly powerless. The movie is really more about Anthy helping Utena wake up and get out of Ohtori academy, which does happen, and they ride away with eachother naked and they kiss and it's great. So you could say they do find eachother and have a somewhat happy ending. But, I definetly wouldn't recommend the movie since it's WAY more creepy. I love both to pieces and I'm really glad that you watched it. (And if everyone's worried about the gore, unless I'm remembering wrong, the goriest part of it are the swords.) Honestly I could talk about it for hours, and if anyone wants to do so I'd be happy to help.

    Trying to explain Utena is like trying to see an atom with your bare eyes, you did a great job.
    *spoilers below for the ending*
    Their relationship is just so beautiful and I love the ending with all of my heart. Not the part where Utena disappears obviously but when Anthy becomes free. It's just so amazing she is literally the human embodiment of suffering and surviving abuse and self hatred and so on, a being needed to be saved by a noble prince. In the end it's herself who saves her, although Utena gave her the incentive to realize she is the master of her own fate. Anthy realizes she can love herself and be her own person, take away the identity that was forced upon you. Did you notice she left her glasses behind, being a signal for how she sees the world differently now.
    She was also wearing pink. My theory is in Utena that red symbolises the 'Princess' or Rose Bride, and white the Prince. Her pink dress means she has broken out of this system and is free to choose who she wants to be.
    I fully believe with all my heart that she reunites with Utena.
    As a survivor of abuse this story and character is tremendously important to me and I don't think anything else will ever compare to it.
    Even with all of it's extreme weirdness.

    This is my favorite anime of all time, but as someone a few years older than you that experienced these shows when they were new, I can definitely understand the confusion. I think what makes this show a classic is that it was a risk taker, and essentially made a point to pay tribute to other popular shoujo series while being its own thing.

    • @drekaflugan
      @drekaflugan 8 лет назад +5

      I have watched both and even though they are really different they both have a similar vibe that I haven't really found in anything else, it's hard to explain. I would say NGE is more depressing, maybe deals more with human emotions and sense of self, vs our sense of others, and Utena is more symbolic (even though NGE has a ton of symbolism I think Utena just explodes the scale).
      I think people who are fans of either Utena or NGE will probably 90% like the other one too, except maybe if they don't like the genre of the other show.

      I find it really funny how many people (or Otakus) comprare Revolutionary Girl Utena and Neon Genesis Evangelion. It just like how many people compare Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z together. For what I compare to is Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 and The Rose of Versailles

    You should check out the movie, it's a different perspective, it shows a more romantic relationship between Anthy and Utena and it's basically Anthy's journey to find Utena and how she became the rose bride. Plus Utena and Anthy both look different.

  • @ellesig4708
    @ellesig4708 7 лет назад +1

    He showed her hope, hope springs eternal. Utena is one of those anime's that talks about societal norms. Maybe you should watch it again in 5 or 10 years you'll have new perspective and may not see it as such a silly show. I love Utena, the visuals are amazing and the direction brilliant, there are so many details and creative ways to express ideas, everything means something. Absolute destiny Apocalypse is about the unknowable future. Basically if you watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World you'll get what's happening. The end of the world is the beginning of adulthood, the castle represents marriage. Those are church bells or wedding bells, it's all about the happily ever after idea. The show is open to interpretation, you can think of them as close friends or lovers. The incest thing may lend itself to the idea that royals were often inbred, to me it felt like all of those women who defend social norms that disenfranchise them like religions and traditions that treat them like second class citizens or barely human, more often then not vilify them for their gender, in societies like that women can either be young virginal princesses worthy of love and protection or evil witches that should be punished and loathed. Anthy embraces this because (like many other women) it is all she has known and thinks it's the way things should be in order to get her happily ever after some day. Please don't watch dubbed anime, there are so few that get it right. Those people just read the lines there's hardly any direction or actual acting. Ranma 1/2, part of Sailor Moon and Most of Dragonball are some of the few exceptions.

  • @ColdxFeet
    @ColdxFeet 8 лет назад +1

    Yeah the movie is probably even more confusing than the anime itself. I see the movie as like a half retelling half continuation. because the beginning is really a retelling of like the Student Counsel Arc, and the second half is more like what happens after the ending of the series. But either way it's certainly a Wild Ride.
    honestly, with Utena I think you almost half to go into the series knowing that you're not going to get your questions answered without looking up theories. And to be fair, Ikuhara's other animes (Mawaru Penguindrum and Yurikuma Arashi) are equally as confusing and metaphorical.

  • @luigipony14
    @luigipony14 8 лет назад +10

    Please research Ikuhara who was the director of this show, especially if you plan to watch his other shows(Mawaru and YuriKuma). The themes you were confused by are put in alot of his shows and honestly reading a dissection of this anime before recording this video wouldve helped alot. I know you respect the subjects and themes but calling it the "banksy edgelord of anime" isn't..the best? It comes across you gave a big disregard to what it was trying to do.
    Good luck on this review series

    • @Pixielocks

      Thank you for your input!! My review was honest and I gave what I felt based on watching it without any prior research on it which.. I don't really think watching an anime should require you to do. I still enjoyed it and understand the incredibly intricate metaphors and deeper meaning but it was portrayed with such astounding vagueness that I couldn't help but find it hard to take it seriously sometimes. Thank you for the advice though!!

    • @drekaflugan

      Ikuhara is the biggest edgelord of them all, and edge prince if you will.

    • @strangess13
      @strangess13 7 лет назад

      It's reasonable to expect the work should stand on its own without requiring the viewer to take notes much less research interpretations of it. I think it was in fact very respectful of her to muster the focus on it to persist. To not give up despite the overwhelming level of vagueness and details.
      (Though I get the idea she partially couldn't help but want to find out what was going to happen? Curious what her reasons were if so.)

    Thank you for reviewing this! Btw, if it helps, the "power to gain the world revolution" is essentially the power of God. The one who gets it can have literally anything they desire most, which is why everybody fights so hard to get Anthy.
    Also, Dios is supposed to be God, while Akio is supposed to be like a Satan allegory. Thanks again! :3

      It took me so long to figure that out, and Dios is literally Spanish for "God". How I didn't realize that, considering my first language is Spanish, I will never know.

    • @KitaYsabell
      @KitaYsabell 7 лет назад +1

      It's significantly more complicated than that, and there are multiple theories as to what, exactly, the "power of Dios" is or represents.
      For starters, note the different language used with each of the Duelists to refer to it: with Juri, it's "miracles," with Saionji, it's "something eternal," and for Miki, it's "something shining."
      And what's actually behind the door? Anthy in a coffin. That's it. That's what they were really fighting for. So why did Akio portray it the way he did?
      So far as I know, the foremost fan community is the forum In the Rose Garden, whose founder(s) and top mod go by empty-movement on Tumblr.

    • @mementomori4812
      @mementomori4812 7 лет назад +1

      I have even the theory that Utena is like representing the allegoric figure of Christ, and Anthy is a symbol that represents "humanity", abused by Satan (who is Akio). Finally, Utena sacrifices herself for Anthy, as Christ did for humanity, and even when it seems like a failure, it's the liberation, the revolution and the final victory.

    Interesting review! Utena was a series I honestly didn't know if I liked until after I watched the whole thing and read explanations and theories on it. TBH I enjoy it more for it's soundtrack and aesthetics than the content since it was confusing as all hell. I do have to disagree that it wasn't gay though, since I do believe Utena developed feelings that were more than platonic for Anthy over the course of the series, however I think it was slow and subtle and that perhaps she didn't realize it until the end during the Duel of Revolution. I honestly don't know if Anthy reciprocated them at all, but I do feel like Utena at the very least did have feelings for her. But that's just my interpretation :o
    It is definitely a beautiful series, though it isn't for everyone considering how dense it is on the symbolism and metaphors. I'm glad you gave it a chance though and recognized the artistry of the anime even though you didn't personally like it since the content was kind of creepy and graphic. It definitely did get incredibly uncomfortable at times though with the incest and really dramatic stabbing with Anthy. There's a lot of old anime seems to really like the weird brother complex/incest thing a lot for some reason and it's just like ?????
    I honestly wouldn't recommend the movie if the anime bothered you. It's just about as graphic as the anime during a few parts of it. If you still feel like giving it a chance since you already watched the series, it's very beautifully animated and definitely more obviously gay than the anime ever was which was very nice. It gets kind of uncomfortable to watch sometimes though because there is a couple strangely adult scenes between Anthy and Utena, incest again, and some death mentions/death scenes (I thiiiiink only 1 of those is kind of graphic though?),. The movie is just about as confusing as the series upon first watch, if not even more confusing, however it's still more easily explained than the series is if you look up written explanations for it. It's at least a little easier to digest since theres less going on compared to the series, but there is an huge end scene that is is CONFUSING. The transition from the rest of the movie to the end is pretty jarring and honestly a really Wild Ride. I found it kind of hilarious tbh though LOL
    I personally saw the movie as both a continuation and a retelling of the series, though I'm curious to see what you think of it if you watch it!

    • @strangess13
      @strangess13 7 лет назад

      Though because it's super condensed there's many less details to keep in your head. I wonder if anyone's tried to do an estimate what % of the run time is deeply disturbing compared to the series. o_O
      Would definitely mostly agree that if one is watching it hoping for greater clarity or closure, probably not?
      (The credibility of the ending and absorbing it as a meaningful conclusion is more challenging. It's like watching a movie that started at 8 hours cut down to 1. Just because it ends doesn't mean the story will feel like it made sense.)
      If one just wanted to see a rearrangement of the elements and characters in Utena just to see them used again, it would be more likely to be worthwhile.

    the reason it's confusing is because you're looking at it literally. I would trying reading some reviews about it that look at the symbolic meaning of it and then re-watching it completely. otherwise, yeah, you would make a 25 minute video in which 20 minutes is explaining the anime and reiterating it's all very confusing >_>;;;

    Can I make a suggestion? If you wanna summarize the entire plot, including half the twists, then you do you, boo. It's your channel. But please can you *say* that you're going to be spoiling the series and give people an option to skip that part?
    I've already watched Utena-twice-so I'm not really interested in a twenty-minute recap of it. I just wanted to know what you thought of it. Similarly, there might be some peeps watching because they wanted to hear your opinion before checking out the show, but they unwittingly got most of it spoiled for them and maybe they didn't want that.

    This was really a great thing to watch. For someone speaking with just a bare outline it was coherent, genuine and had deep feeling.
    This is a deeply disturbing work and you have every right to have deep ambivalence about it. If someone doesn't find it disturbing they're either desensitized, has creepy values, or they've got a lot of practice dealing with (but not ignoring or dismissing) disturbing things.
    I'm so glad you're not in any of those categories. You seem to want to make the world around you brighter and better. So I don't see how changing to become one of those three things would be good for you.
    But I am curious: it sounds like this show left some lingering trauma. Do you think you're the sort of person that if you understood why it inflicted the wounds on the viewer which it did, that you'd find some comfort? To know it wasn't just the author being edgy for the sake of being edgy?
    Or do you think that you might appreciate the things you liked about it more if you knew more of what was going on with them?
    Or are you pretty much done with this and Utena's like a splinter in your foot that used to give a jab of pain if you stepped on it (at first) but now it's got a capsule of tough flesh around it and it doesn't hurt too much unless you step just wrong?
    In any event, thank you again. Shine on and may your powers increase.

    Honestly i watched Utena because you said it was even darker then Madoka so i was thinking damn it must be really tragic but when i watched it it was tragic but it wasnt even that dark it was just messed up how he used her to end the rose bride's eternal suffering. I kinda liked the fight song though but it did get very annoying lol

    Utena is very much a coming of age story. I always love to watch and rewatch the show. The movie is okay, but does not give enough as the show :3 Everytime I rewatch I find something new. If I remember correctly it does take a lot from a book.... I gotta look it up again, but honestly its such a beautiful anime :3 I could go on to how its a very strong female based film. :3
    Anyways, i need to stop going on. Theres so much to the show. :3

    To understand Utena it's necessary to understand, at least, the main differences between hindu and buddhist phylosophies, and their main branches, together with some jungian psychoanalysis. It actually makes sense, both the anime and the movie, but without the proper background, it seems nonsensical.
