- In this Fall Line Ridge video, we continue our series on remodeling our living room (this is part 3). We'll put in insulation, take you through the process of using a Wood Mizer LT15 sawmill to edge seasoned lumber, plane it with a Grizzly planer, and then start putting up wall boards and window trim. This is part 3 of the series of remodeling the living room of what used to be an off grid cabin and builds upon the work done in previous episodes. Whether you're a DIYer following along with the series or just looking for inspiration for your own remodel, this video is a must-watch.

I love the timber houses that Americans often build for themselves. Here in Australia, new timber houses are nearly unheard of. We do have significant termite problems in most parts of the country but that can be mitigated with proper termite barriers and management. As far as I can see, it's just a preference thing. There was a time when all Queensland houses were made of natural timbers and those houses are often cherished by their owners. Timber houses have a character that brick veneer and plastered houses really lack.
I love the old Queenslanders, now all we see are rows and rows of massive concrete blocks. with virtually no land for garden.
Do you think that's because our native trees are not as suitable for milling into lumber as theirs? All the species common with woodworking grow naturally over there.
@@wirrawaywonderer6011 Not at all. We have some of the best timbers in the world growing as natives in Australia. We have ironbark, box, spotted gum, red river gum, sydney blue gum, cypress pine, blackbutt, brushbox, jarrah and a bunch of others that are used in frames, floors and walls. We also have plantations of North American radiata pine which grows fast and is exactly the same timber being used in this video.
The costs of the native timbers has risen over time and the understandable desire to preserve natural stands of these species has limited the supply of lumber. However, this hasn't stopped their use in house features such as flooring and outdoor decking. Modern framing is almost always radiata pine or similar species and is generally hidden behind brick veneer, rendering and Gyprock.
Even when not using brick veneers, we've mostly avoided exterior timber cladding and interior timber lining, opting instead for exterior cement sheeting and we use Gyprock, bamboo composite flooring and decorative veneered plywood inside instead of timber alternatives.
@@janhorton5197 I could not agree more, Jan. I have my eye on an old Queenslander out bush a couple of hours from where I live and if I can get the funding, I'm going to buy it. If not, I'll be looking at similar ones in the future.
You can still buy removal houses from a few companies just north of Brisbane. The best ones sell for about $150,000 delivered within 100km but there are much cheaper ones if you don't mind some restoration work.
Well, he is working with 2nd and 3rd growth of the smaller species of trees in the US.
The big species all grow on the west coast. Sitka spruce, both varieties of redwood, Western red cedar, and Douglas Fir are just a few examples. The second growth examples of these trees are almost all larger and more durable than were the old growth of the eastern relatives.
There's always sawdust and glue to close up gaps
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼………………………………That wall looks good!
Nice job. Live and learn is my go to saying. I'm 75 and still learn new things all the time. Living life is a great teacher. God Bless
thank you for sharing your son with us!
There comes a time on every job when you have to say "good enough". You're doing a great job best of luck to you. Oh if you want to get all the foam out of the cans you're supposed to hold them upside down. I used to work where they made that stuff.
Yep, sometimes good enough really is good enough.
❤️👍👍👍good filming.
The wall really looks good
Thank God for trees and the knowledge he gave man to cut wood for building. great video and great work. Thank You.
Good job 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Take care of yourself, be safe, and healthy 🇨🇦
Hey buddy, I just got done watching your video and yeah don’t ever beat yourself up about it the way I see it it’s perfect. You can’t get any better than that. I watch Shawn James as well. He’s an awesome guy. Very humble. Keep on doing what you’re doing God bless you and your family.
👍 Outstanding Job...way stronger than sheet rock thats for sure 💯✌
Oh yeah, not a fan of sheet rock. I can hang anything I want, of any weight, any where on these walls and it'll hold just fine.
You're doing a fine job; I get tired just watching you work.
Good evening Wes. Great job, looks very nice. Thanks for sharing.
That remodel looks good... It.80% to 90% finished. I love those wooden house. I have log house in the future.
The wall is close! But there's a ceiling, floor, and 3 more walls to go!
Edging makes some nice tomato stakes too! I can't believe it has been two years since you took those trees down on your neighbors land. Wow!
I know, time gets away from us.
Great job
Hey Mr. Green Jeans. You can do anything !!! The wall looks really good, it came out nicely. And a brief appearance by the Junior Supervisor YAY Little Levi !!
You really are doing a great job, Wes - impressive remodel - still the patience of Job!! 😍 God bless you and your family. Thanks for sharing this with us!! 🙏😍👍
Another good video (not perfect...HA!) I'm glad you got your helper in there ,love the interaction between you and your son, thanks for sharing!
The window alone is extremely impressive. I hope Mrs. Fall Line Ridge is happy! Amazing start to finish.
I like your knotty pine interior walls. Nice and bright-looking.
That is a fine job and I bet it makes that room a lot warmer.
Not much yet, we've got an opening into the laundry room that needs a door. We lose tons of heat to that opening.
Wow that board fit GOOD
Good job! There is nothing like your wood on the walls of your home!
@14:30..... That is the best dust extraction system ever! Keep up the great work, Wes!👍💪
Nice job, you work so hard for your family.
I’ve started using those ‘No-Mortice’ door hinges. Boy are they great
Man...wish I had known about that before I hacked out that door frame.
Hello Wes. Great job! You did not say, or if you did, I did not hear you, if you were going to stain or paint the wood. If painting, Elmers makes a great wood putty that is paintable. It comes in a squeeze bottle. I guess you knew that one day you would need that pile of lumber you had worked for.
Have good days!
Great job, Wes !!
I don't remember you saying anything about it, but might be a good idea to think about lap joint or tongue and Grove for the wall boards. They will shrink and expand depending on the season and humidity. If there is a lap joint or shiplap joint you wouldn't see through to the insulation when a gap is visible. One other thing I saw some individuals make a few shallow kurf cuts down the length of the back of the board to keep the boards from cupping. Good luck with your project 👍.
Excellent video. Excellent work! But, your walking/talking little Man of a Thought Process Machine was my favorite! 😉 The wall, the windows, the door all look amazing, Wes! Thank you for your efforts, and that of your Li'l Man! 😉
I know the satisfaction of working on one's own house, but to mill the lumber multiplies exponentially that feeling. Great video and nice work Wes well done. My grandfather was a carpenter back in the '40's and he had a great saying, "You can't see it from a galloping horse".
"Looks good from my house."
Nice job man!
I built several cabins by putting my rough lumber horizontal inside. If you will use black tar roofing paper stapled over the insulation...if the boards do draw up a little all you will have is a black line and want be able to see the studs. Just a FYI. You done a great video! Hats off to ya.
My mom actually gave me that advice (as she had similar issues on her house) and I totally forgot about it...I think going forward I'll probably invest in some tar paper.
Mate I reckon you've done a bloody awesome job. Well done.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
I like the idea of using sawed lumber for the walls and trim, I think that it will look good with a light stain. Well done and look forward to many more videos from you....
Reminds me of my uncle's house. Every bit hand built by him with scavenged lumber, I guess now days it's called 'reclaimed'. I remember that place fondly. It's gone now and a POA'd subdivision was built in it's place 30 or so years ago. Good vid, Thanks for taking me along.
Sad to see old places with so much character destroyed like that. Thanks for watching!
It looks really good to me.
Good job on the wall
Really enjoyed this video.
Good looking job, my friend. It must give you great satisfaction that you cut the trees, milled the lumber, dried the lumber, and planned the lumber and now you are making a beautiful remodel with the lumber.
Everything looks real nice Wes 😊 Good to see Lil Man helping 😉 It all will look real nice in the end ..... Good Bless and take care ...... :)
You do a great job. I wish I had the carpenter skill you have.
I'm no pro, made lots of mistakes just to learn what little I know.
Nice job brother 👍👍👍😊
My wife and I built a small vacation house on the site of my grandparents home. Your video brought back many great memories of us doing that build. We did our walls with Blue Stained Pine that my father had cut and sawed for his house but didn’t use. All the lumber came from our family land. The “Little House” has great memories and sentimental value to me. I appreciate this video and the great memories it brought up.
Great story, James. Old houses are a treasure trove of history.
What a great story !! ❤
One man's good is another man's perfect. Looks great to me. Love the rustic look and feel of your home. Well done Wes...well done.
Wow it turned out so nice. You really need to do a before and after picture.
Mate, your son is absolutely gorgeous. You n your wife are doing a great job raising him. 👏 I look forward to your videos cos I love watching sawmilling videos. Plus I like to watch people building things. Have a great day mate. 👍
Beautiful !
You seem to know what you're doing. Looks good!
Wes considering you dont consider yourself a carpenter you have done a great job 👍👍
Well done.
Lookin good!
Great job buddy!
Looks really good. You should be proud of what you have accomplished.
A trick that I learned on the foam. If you have part of a can left, use an aerosol can of carb cleaner or brake cleaner and spray out the straw and the port on the can as soon as you are done foaming. This will clean all of the foam out and you can use the can again. If you let the foam sit up, you will have to discard the rest of the can.
There is a low expanding foam to use around windows. It isn't as likely to expand and push the window out of square.
Looks good. I think you are doing great.
Thx for sharing
It looks great.
It is looking great! How satisfying to remodel your home with lumber you milled. God Bless, Daryl
It looks very good!!
Looking good Wes!!!!!!! Wish I had a talent for carpentry - I always cut on the wrong side of the line - LOL. Nice work!!!
Ha! I make plenty of mistakes too.
Looks great!
Nice job!!!
Well done sir. I appreciate your attention to detail, but also your awareness that perfectionism is not our friend. It’s also wonderful how your kindness to helping your friend, supplied you with lumber for your home in the long run. God is good!
Looking good, project is coming along well. I noticed the highway 80 sign on the shop. I lie about a mile off of Highway 80 down here on my end
Looking good
Looks great.
Nutriosopa,,love that green planer, I have a 12” new one, hope it as great as yours,
VERY GOOD, here in Brazil it's still masonry, but the work in wood is too good 👏👏👏🤠
Good stuff! Termite proof!
It's really looking good. I love the wood siding.
Looking good..
It looks good.
Looks great ❤
Great job!! I enjoy your videos
Awesome video! Wall looks great. Love the closing shot!! Drones are AWESOME. God Bless!
Looks good and a great improvement. Nice to have neighbors and a mill to custom make your own lumber for remodeling.
Holy Jehoshaphat. All that milling has once again that hobby of yours is really paying off. It is just beautiful. Congrats!
Looks good
Trick for ya instead of breaking the Pc off after reaching the saws max cut, just lift the side closest too you up a inch and it it finish the cut for ya !
Try it once
Looks good to me .
Polyurethane yellows over time. Use satin lacquer instead. A rabbiting bit on a simple router makes easy shiplap but then again a little imperfection gives it a little attitude. Nice looking wall.
Looks really good!! Cant wait for the next step!
Looks great. It did turn out great. Love the rustic look.
I did insulation all around my 60' x 34" main shop room. THis had to go all the way up to the top of the walls - 12". What remains is around 15 sheets of OSB - but I'm gonna use 1/4" on the upper course (which is all that is left) as all it has to do is hold the inslulation in (which is already stapled to the joists...).. THis stuff looks fun in comparison - annnd it's like 20 degrees in that shop - tho now I have a floor heater with 200,000 btu and a 100 lb tank, so that's takin' the chill out.. Eventually I'll do a wall heater ... propane probably. - but it only takes around 20 mins to take the chill outta the room.
I am currently remodeling our living room and have a stack of blue pine I am doing the walls with. I have tossed back and forth with whether to butt them or shiplap them and finally relented to dado for shiplap ... just in case.
I often edge a stack of planks the same way and getting them compressed perfectly is a PITA, but so much easier. Lol.
Yours looks great. Really nice to see it all come together!
Brilliant Wes! Top job with the insulation and the boards. Stay safe & well.
Your videos and channel are a positive inspiration for all to behold. Keep them coming!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching.
Awesome video Great work !
Thanks for the visit!
Nicely done, what a difference. Amazing what you can accomplish with a sawmill and planer. Looking forward to when it’s done.
Me too!
Nice work mate, you did a really good job. I bet the family is really happy with the end results.
I always strive for perfection, but never achieve it. So what I end up with is close to perfection, which is a step up from average.
Youve done a lot of great work there. Those boards will shrink and gap over time. That's why half laps are normally used in this application. I'm a little surprised you just butted them up.
Great work !!!
I love working with wood. I'm glad you are making videos like this. Thank you.
Your remodel is coming along nicely, and I like those new windows. They look like they are high quality , and will be easy to clean.
They seem to be put together pretty good, just standard Home Depot windows. We're happy with them.
the remodeling really looks good. thanks for all the videos and work that you share with us. hope you and yours have a great week end and a good week.
Looks good,well done 👍
👍! Thanks for sharing! 👌
Thanks for watching!
Love it
Awesome job bud. Keep at it! Love the look of your rustic home!!
