Making a prybar and a lockpick would be a good idea. Also don't forget to unload batteries from devices.
Fighting zombies that cross windows is a great way to get a few free hits as it takes them a long while to cross.

Unless I'm mistaken your character will eventually stop feeling bad about killing zombie children if you kill enough of them.

Not all puddles have same water - some are salt water, some are normal etc.

I used to watch another RUclipsr play DDA a few years ago. It's always humorous seeing the same issues pop up, like dropping your backpack before a fight... then forgetting it. Or bumping into a moose... and avoiding it. There were a few others, like being cautious with encountering basement spiders or bumping into a Mi-Go. I recall one tactic was to set fire to an isolated house near the edge of town away from where you wanted to search and allowing the noise from the fire to attract all the nearby zombies... who burn themselves to death entering the house. Unless that has changed, I think you should try it.
With regards to the Washing Kit, I have to agree with your last statement. The kit might require actually be holding water in your inventory. Just locate a random liquid container, empty it, then fill the container with water from the toilet. Maybe then it will allow you to wash the backpack. This is only a suggestion, as I recall you used to be able to wash clothes by standing adjacent to a water source.
