Interesting that you mention retirement. Barry actually retired on a miscommunication with the coach. The coach called Barry up really late because there had been rumors swirling about Barry retiring. Barry was barely awake and mumbling a little. He told the coach he was tired. The coach misunderstood what Barry said and thought he said retired. Next season the coach is fired. Barry had an escape clause in his contract stating that if the coach was fired that Barry had the option to become an unrestricted free agent. Barry found out and had decided to come out of retirement and exercise the escape clause. He signed all of the paperwork, and had actually became a dolphin. I have said for years…if Barry could have played for Dallas, there would be no debate whatsoever who the goat is. He would have been the Michael Jordan of football…and probably was anyway.
This, the futility of being a legend and the only good player on the Lion's roster for many years, compiled with aging at a young man's position, and they were wearing the poor man out using him to run 15k yards and rumble through a trainwreck for a yard or two....I can see why Barry Sanders stepped back and called it quits not too long after this. He was a joy to watch run though, one of the greatest backs ever.
Ive never cared or bought into the argument that Barry never had a great O line, because to me it always more about him never having a string enough pass attack to take the pressure off him. But man. This video shows more than anything how much he needed a great O line lmao. He's not just dealing with Ray, he's got 3 Ravens picking him up in the backfield every play! Edit: LMAO, I mean look at the D line, normally you see 4 or 5 lined up, theyre doing 6 or 7 on every play because they know its its gonna be a run play and the pass is no threat 😂😂😂😂
This is why football is the ultimate team game. No matter how great a player is, QB, RB, WR, LB, DB they all need a great line in front to block or take on blocks. The Ravens always had massive and good dlinemen to allow the rest of the d to. Lewis and the rest were getting to Sanders in the backfield unblocked. Even Jim Brown and Walter Payton would have been crushed behind that Lions oline.
That years ravens team was the foundation for their 2000 superbowl. Hard hitting and High football IQ defense, probably won't see anything like that again with the way the current game is going.
They had Barry running behind my daughters 3rd grade class. Detroit SHOULD have been ashamed of themselves for this. That's why he's my greatest RB. All the running and no one to block for him.
I was at this game! He had 1500 yards and then lost 9 yards on several carries alter. The last person to ever tackle Barry Sanders was Michael McCrary. I would end up working for him and his dad at their company in 2006-2007. LOL!
Both were among the greatest of their position. Imagine if Ray Lewis faced the run&shoot offence? He would have been in the backfield more than any of the Lions players!
Ray Lewis was great, of course, but he also was the king of piling on late when someone else actually made the tackle, and then jumping up to celebrate as if it was all him. No one celebrated other guy's tackles more than Ray Lewis.
Ok, now you're talking some full retard. I'm a steelers fan, and I know better than that. Ray Lewis was NOT the king of celebrating other guys tackles. He was the teams hype machine for most of the time, and had an instinctive magnet for the ball. He'd almost always be near the play, not always first. But he absolutely blew up play after play, riding the coat tales of no freaking body. No. Body. Whether it was his tackle, a team tackle, someone else leading that he was there helping...whatever. Too many tackles by HIM to talk about trying to steal credit. He didn't need to. And popping Bettis and putting him down in his tracks...that's legit HIM. He bruised more than one back out of a game. But it was more about being where the ball was heading. He did that.
Uh...I think you might have misspelled LT or Dick Butkus in your post, my friend! I'd say Ray is #3 after LT and Butkus, which I think many would agree with. LT is unquestionably the #1 linebacker of all time. He changed the NFL's freakin offensive schemes for God sakes. Butkus, while a product of a different time, was the meanest by far, and one of the hardest hitting linebackers ever. Ray was amazing too but I feel just an ounce short of being the best ever.

All he had to do is play 1 more season. But with a good offensive line, he would have shattered it
If if if.
I have said for years…if Barry could have played for Dallas, there would be no debate whatsoever who the goat is. He would have been the Michael Jordan of football…and probably was anyway.
I can’t believe I’m just realizing I witnessed live Barry’s last game I was in the building in Baltimore that day ……
This, the futility of being a legend and the only good player on the Lion's roster for many years, compiled with aging at a young man's position, and they were wearing the poor man out using him to run 15k yards and rumble through a trainwreck for a yard or two....I can see why Barry Sanders stepped back and called it quits not too long after this. He was a joy to watch run though, one of the greatest backs ever.
2 absolute legends right here
Ive never cared or bought into the argument that Barry never had a great O line, because to me it always more about him never having a string enough pass attack to take the pressure off him.
Goose cleaning Ray Lewis's helmet was dope💯
This is why football is the ultimate team game. No matter how great a player is, QB, RB, WR, LB, DB they all need a great line in front to block or take on blocks. The Ravens always had massive and good dlinemen to allow the rest of the d to. Lewis and the rest were getting to Sanders in the backfield unblocked. Even Jim Brown and Walter Payton would have been crushed behind that Lions oline.
Bears oline sucked in the beginning of Payton's career but he still racked up stats
Payton had a worse o-line than Sanders. Still sanders couldn’t garner the rushing record.
Had Barry had the current Lions O-line he’d go off for 2500.
The Ravens are all in the box and a Raven is coming unblocked every play. Barry Sanders really was a workhorse on sub par Detroit teams
The last game he ever played, when he ran off the field a feeling came over me.
Its tough to run when you get hit as soon as you touch the ball. I see why he retired after this year.
You had to be a supreme tackler back then. Shows how good the whole NFL was versus today
Did the commentators say people thought Ray Lewis was too small to play in the nfl? 6-1. 240 linebacker
They played 8 in the box majority the time against Lions and the man still bust 1500yds😮
Imagine if he had been in the backfield of SF or DAL in the 90's?
He could of played five more years at least. Dude took a pounding tho. Glad to see him out healthy. H ya e goat
They was on him before he even got a chance to get going. No other running back could have done what he done with those weak offensive line's he had.
Now that we’ve come… to the end of the road…
And STILL the best RB of all time.
Nah. Not even top 3.
That years ravens team was the foundation for their 2000 superbowl. Hard hitting and High football IQ defense, probably won't see anything like that again with the way the current game is going.
This is more about how bad that offensive line is
1500+ rushing yards 5 years in a row is crazy.
They had Barry running behind my daughters 3rd grade class. Detroit SHOULD have been ashamed of themselves for this. That's why he's my greatest RB. All the running and no one to block for him.
Don't disrespect your daughter's 3rd grade class like that...Im sure they were way better than the lions o-line that year 😂
He had fourteen hundred yards
"A dissappointing 1,491 yards season"... that's how GREAT he was!
If Barry was on the current Lions, with their OL and play calling, he’d have 2,000 yards easy.
Ravens need to bring back those helmets every now and then
I was at this game! He had 1500 yards and then lost 9 yards on several carries alter. The last person to ever tackle Barry Sanders was Michael McCrary. I would end up working for him and his dad at their company in 2006-2007. LOL!
Imagine if Barry had a couple of years with an O-line like Dallas had in that era. Imagine.
He had a line like in Washington and Dallas during that era, he might have had a couple 2k years
I was at this game, and the whalloping the ravens got from the vikings. Wow lol. Havent been back since
Both were among the greatest of their position. Imagine if Ray Lewis faced the run&shoot offence? He would have been in the backfield more than any of the Lions players!
imagine if this guy had a DECENT blocking crew. My lord.
It's sad he finished his career with 99 rush tds. The Lions failed him and Megatron!
This was Barry’s last game, I’ll never forget
2 legends! Plus Rod woodson and Jonathan Ogden
Bears fan here. Couldn't stand him at the time but he is the best back ever in NFL and college.
Ray is the best defensive player ever hands down point blank period
Uh...I think you might have misspelled LT or Dick Butkus in your post, my friend!
I'd say Ray is #3 after LT and Butkus, which I think many would agree with. LT is unquestionably the #1 linebacker of all time. He changed the NFL's freakin offensive schemes for God sakes. Butkus, while a product of a different time, was the meanest by far, and one of the hardest hitting linebackers ever. Ray was amazing too but I feel just an ounce short of being the best ever.
@daveb5992 L.T. was a defensive end not a linebacker Carr was the linebacker on the Giants team and as far as dick butkus um the best running back ever hands down ran all over him nine time rushing leader jim brown
Lewis was dominant in this game. Incredible stuff.
@ICDUMPEPL shut up fat loser
Watching this after the Lions win the Division is some sweet redemption!
Nope. They had the greatest RB in history and did nothing to support him. Unforgivable. Irredeemable.
Crazy that he got 1500. But then lost yards and finished under it. Man, this brought back nightmares. How could Detroit be so bad with this guy.
