300 Winchester Magnum 12 brake comparison

  • This test has 8 of my Beast series brakes compared to 4 from my top competition. My Super Beast brake wasn't designed with a 300 Win mag in mind but it's still a good comparison. Taking a gun with over 54" of free recoil travel and reducing it to about 16" really shows how well the best brakes do at reducing recoil.

    Finally a REAL brake test. This imo is way better than what people have been doing with putting them on a swing.

      I'm prototype testing tomorrow as well as some new test with more of my competitors brakes. I changed my sled a bunch to lighten the weight so it will be interesting to see how things shake out with the new sled.

    I will do a lot more testing next spring when things aren't frozen. I have numerous calibers I will add like a 6.5PRC, 7 Rem mag, 300wsm, 300PRC, 30 Nosler, 300RUM, 375 Cheytac Imp. I might do a 28 Nosler and 338 Edge as well. There is very little actual difference between many of these caliber when it comes to muzzle brake performance. As the powder capacity goes up for a given caliber the larger brakes with more ports work better. The reason why larger diameter brakes work better, when designed for the caliber, is the baffle wall is larger. That allows gases a larger surface area to counter act recoil.
    I do also have a few more brakes to add to the testing and will try to get a few more before spring. I will also do a video with numerous calibers without brakes compared to several calibers with brakes to show the felt recoil of bigger calibers compares to smaller unbroke calibers.

    Nice comparison -- awesome that you're including both the recoil and velocity (haven't seen anyone else do that). Even better ... Bergers are my go to bullet.
    It would be helpful to have a velocity/recoil chart here (or on the website) for a quick reference. At least for me, I'd accept a little higher recoil for less impact to velocity (or ft lbs).
    Saw you're also making a titanium version ... can we assume the results would be similar.

    • @muzzlebrakesandmore3492

      I will do more testing this next spring. One will be a 7 Rem mag along with a 300PRC, 30 Nosler, 300RUM. Basically if the powder volume or charge weights are relatively close then the performance will be the same. For example a 300PRC only has about 1.5grs more case capacity then a 300wm. So while I will test a 300PRC the results will be the same as a 300wm. There is very little difference between a 7-300wm and a 7 Rem mag so I wouldn't expect any performance difference.

    I'm new to rifles
    I'm learning
    Please forgive me if this is a stupid question
    How does a brake affect the shot? In general. Does it hurt long long range accuracy? Like, beyond say 1250yd? Does it hurt energy on impact?
    Does it kick up a lot more dust in the prone position? I'm out here in the Mohave desert. Shooting lanes are typically very dusty.
    I want to learn how to shoot, and I want to learn how to make rapid follow up shots. Why? Well, it's fun with a pistol. It was more fun back in the day when I did it with an M16A2. It's even more fun with a 12G.
    I figure learning to make rapid follow up shots with a big bolt action rifle ought to be a real hoot and a half!
    Also because 🇺🇲Merica🇺🇲
    Any shared knowledge/experience is greatly appreciated

    • @nathanwright6065
      @nathanwright6065 4 года назад +1

      It doesn't effect accuracy if installed correctly nor does it change velocity or energy. The ports are parallel to the ground so it doesn't kick up dust. I understand the questions to learn. Everyone has to start somewhere.

      @muzzlebrakesandmore3492  Год назад +1

      I haven't tested a HuDu but I'd bet a large stack of cash their percentage of recoil reduction claims are pure BS. Drilled hole brakes dont have the surface area a ported brake has no matter how many holes there are. A flat or slightly cupped baffle/port has a large surface area to counter act recoil. Only about 45 degrees of a round hole does any meaningful work at reducing recoil. Probably only about 1/2 that 45 degrees does anywhere near the work of a flat or cupped brake but that surface area is so small on a drilled hole that it would take at least 12 holes to equal 1 baffle. There are 5 baffles per side on my Beast brake in that video. That would mean the brake would need 120 holes or more to come close. Their pictures show 7 holes per side.

    • @muzzlebrakesandmore3492
      @muzzlebrakesandmore3492  3 года назад

      A #3 contour barrel from most manufacturers is only .625 OD at the muzzle. If someone threaded it 5/8x24 then that wasn't very smart. It won't have a shoulder for the brake since the threads are the same diameter as the barrel. If it's a Bartlein then it's like a #4 for everyone else and it's .670" at 26" which is still pretty small for 5/8x24 threads. It barely leaves any shoulder to seat a brake. You won't find a baffled brake that can be turned down that small with 5/8x24 threads. The smallest brake I make in 5/8x24 is .750" OD.
