At the black rodeo, family means more than competition | USA TODAY

  • Black rodeos are bucking perceptions of what cowboys and cowgirls should look like.
Sitting on top of an enormous bucking bull, Ky-Manee Hardy says he has "all of the power in the world." The only thing preventing him from soaring through the air is his right-handed grip on a bull rope and his knees straddling the animal's torso.
A gate swings open and the bull thrashes into the dirt-covered arena, kicking his legs wildly. Thousands of spectators roar, admiring the duel - the first of eight in this bull riding competition at the 35th annual Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo.
In many ways, this rodeo is no different than any other. It's a weekend of bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback horse riding and other rodeo sports. Cowboy hats, Wrangler jeans and western boots are the standard attire. Vendors serve up heapings of fried comfort food from smoke-filled concession stands. The only difference is that every competitor and most of the fans are black.

Clarify.... You stated your are going to ""BE SOMEONE ONE DAY"" .. the thing is... You """ARE"" someone now, plus your a good person. That isn't only from the ppl your around but who you already chose to be.

Growing up black! I was always embarrassed about liking bull riding or rodeos cause I was not white.
Idk why but society portrayed it that way, I’m so happy to see this.

We were at a World Champion Barrel Race and there was a black trainer there with a mixed group of kids. That man was our hero - he encouraged my daughter, as if she was his own student. Not common for anyone in that dog eat dog world.
She went home with a Champion Buckle...if I had only gotten his number to thank him...profusely.

Black people need this, they know discrimination and I know that I would be welcome there even though I look different.

Always been a fan of Charles Sampson, PRCA bullriding champion. I'm sure it wasn't easy getting his 50 in those days.

I love the video because I love this love style. I have one question what if there was an all white rodeo video on RUclips? Would it be considered racist? Just a thought.

Smmfh there are all white rodeos ,just because it doesn't say it ,they're are all white drag racing ,just because it doesn't say it .if it says black it's 100%certain they weren't welcome or felt they weren't welcome .Guarantee if a white person wanted to compete there would be no problem ,just like there are white students at HBCs

Well for a long time they didn't let black people, into their rodeos. So we had to start our own. They would just deny you entry or be extremely mean & hostile against you. & nowadays, just because they let us in their activities & tolerate us does not mean. That they like it, & they will let you know that they don't want you there. So we have to have our own. Many people act like racism just up & disappeared.

@@kobewade8709 straight up,my ex bosses used to race cars ,and when they went to the track they made sure to seek out the officials and make sure all there I's where dotted and Ts crossed ,they knew they didn't really want them there but they wanted to compete so they weren't gonna let them get them on technicalities (this was in south in the 90s)
