I found this fascinating as I was born in Penryn at Myrtle Cottage at the bottom of Truro Hill, demolished quite a long time ago to improve the road layout/junction in The Praze. The Ope's served a very practical purpose, they prevented the Customs men from entering the yard en masse as the narrow passage forced them to enter in single file, where they were met by a number of the occupies armed with "sticks and stones" which did break their bones.
I enjoyed your walk around Penryn so much. Sat with a smile almost all the time. Penryn is a magical place. When putting the book together , more stories were left out than were included .!
LOL! When putting the video together we left out some - as I expect you noticed. This was done deliberately so that people will still have more to find out! Sarah :)
Hi Sarah and Andrew That was a lovely walk thank you. What a lovely place Penryn is with a very interesting history. I love the cottages with the alleyways that lead into shared areas. My aunt lived in one near to the Admiral Benbow in Penzance. It was a suntrap with some beautiful flowers and plants. Oh! and a line of pure white washing! Bygone days. My son and myself have our lunch with you every Friday and coincidentally, just at the point of you mentioning 'doughnuts' Andrew, we had just finished ours. Mmm! Looking forward to next weeks vid. 💕
Fantastic walk! You bring the history of these ancient Cornish towns to life, and what a beautiful streetscape Penryn has :) Your guide book to the history of the town is a gem of a find. Those opes are a curiosity ~ I suspect it needs a lot of cooperation between neighbours to keep everyone happy sharing the space. Btw, loving the new hair-do Sarah...really suits. Not forgetting you Andrew...that beard is looking quite distinguished! Brilliant video :)
Awesome guys. Thanks for the feature. Hope you don’t mind we’ve shared the link. Pleasure to meet you both xx although you missed another false painted window on broad st above the circus school 🤫
I love your historical walks in Cornwall. I really admire the respect the English people have for old building. In most places in America you do not find buildings that are over 200 years. This walk reminded me of that very old building by the harbor in Port Isaac. It's so old and looks like it's going to fall down and yet, it is perserved. Thank you for another lovely walk down the streets of Cornwall.
Hi Sarah and Andrew. I really loved your walk round Penwryn to day. So much history and very interesting seeing all the different styles of houses. Hearing the ghost stories as well. More please. Thank you. Marie
Absolutely glued to it whilst having our supper! So interesting, so many historic buildings and stories to tell. 10 out of 10 for sure and will make it a port of call in the future. Thank you! Liz and Steve
Loved the quirky knockers!! You two really do have the same interests that we do here...finding out about the history of a place and discovering things that others would just walk past without noticing. Such nostalgic history of Penryn especially the old Monastic college area with echoes of the past. And the icing on the cake was the reference to Thomas a Becket....the name Becket is in my family history and whispers from my gran & previous ancestors have always been that we were related somehow! I have managed to get back in time to the middle 1700's with the name of Becket with one of them being the local Mayor. And of course I'm not that far away from Canterbury either! He seems to pop up everywhere in Britain! Love your weekly history lessons! x J x
The hand is quite common. It is known as the hand of Fatima/Miriam, depending on Islamic or Jewish tradition. Fatima was the daughter of Mohammed, Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron. It is basically a good luck symbol, designed to protect the property and its inhabitants, and to attract divine providence
Thank you so much for your walking tours. I’m a ‘cousin Jack’ living in Israel. Penryn was a favorite town of my father. Your walks not only bring back memories but also add information. Happy Christmas to you both.
Walked, driven through Penryn too many times to remember but never knew it had so much history. Sheds a new light on the town. Thanks for sharing....think there's a good pasty shop in the town lol.
Very nice video. Our family were good friends with the Dunstans of Penryn: Arthur, his wife, Iris ("IG" as she was known) and daughter Wendy who owned a toy store in town. Their house was in "The Praze" on the corner of Truro Lane (if I recall correctly). Arthur ("Dickie") Dunstan was mayor (1973/74) and also a blacksmith - his shop is on the Praze too I believe. Iris made wonderful pasties! I believe "Dunston Close" is named to commemorate his time as mayor.
That is a very beautiful town. Seems like a central location to explore other areas as well. Defintely putting it on my list of places to visit. Thank you!
Penryn looks a very charming place, lots of unusual features, don’t think I would like to frequent a pub who’s back garden was used for hanging people! Would rather have my spirits in a glass 🥃 Andrews game of spot the fake window (with no prizes) I failed miserably until he pointed it out! I noticed the blocked one first! there were so many quirky features Andrew was really enjoying himself, his enthusiasm is quite infectious! thank you 😊 both for another wonderful walk round a pleasant and interesting Town with lots of history! 🤗
The fake window and blocked windows are due to the Window Tax, introduced in 1696, and not repealed until 1851.It was a kind of Council tax, based on the amount of windows you had, the assumption being; if you could afford lots of windows you were wealthy enough to pay more tax. So the Avoiders blocked them up!. But because it wrecked the aesthetic appeal of the house, they painted them back on. You will spot them all over the country.
What a beautiful town to visit! I enjoyed this video so much. The building are so interesting with all their quirks and the homes at the back of the passageway are so lovely and the nice little streams. I’m going to watch this one again. All I’ve been watching all week are flooding videos here in British Columbia. Thanks so much for the historical walk.
Never visited Penryn in all the years we have holidayed in Cornwall. we now live n Devon and will visit some of these excellent places you take us too. this is another really interesting visit. Thanks Sarah & Andrew. All the best Bob
This was... yet again... another fascinating trip around a historical town in Cornwall Sarah and Andrew 👌. I have only driven through the streets of Penryn, so a visit for a stroll is definitely on the cards now 🙏. Loved the story about the pirates being scared off ☠️... magic 😂. Love watching your videos just before bed...very relaxing and I can drift off planning my next trip 👍😁💝😘
Another rather enlightening history lesson of a place I have been through many times with facts that didn’t know, Penryn. I shall now look up, and at, properties with an enquiring mind and wonder what history lucks behind the door or op. Interesting video again, well done.
I really enjoyed this, love the History of Cornwall, so glad the Cornish people look after their history to pass on to their families. When Bristol was bombed the Bristol council was not very sympathetic to its history, and rebuilt Bristol with horrid concrete square buildings xx
Really really really enjoyed this film guys. Thank you so much for taking us along and sharing all the brilliant information. 🙏🏻👍🏻. Top work. Cheers Watto
I lived in cornwall for 7 years im 13 now but for 3 years i would walk through penryn town to get to school everyday i moved away afew months ago and i miss it so much
The Fire insurance thing is actually to let the fire brigades know who you were insured with. There was no general Fire Brigade then; each company had its own. So if the place was on fire they would show up, look for the symbol, and if it was not them, they would leave you to singe! Until your Own lot arrived.
I've never been there but feel like I have after watching your informative walk around. Seeing the light blue on various houses / buildings always reminds me of Cornwall (in style / in general). Hayle TC - where I usually Summer holiday - has a lot of light blue as a colour scheme & theme ("heritage") of course.
My mother was evacuated to Penryn from London during WWII. She lived in a house across the street from the old pump. Does anyone know a street address close to the pump? I plan to visit Penryn in the next few months and would like to find it. Thank you.
There's a Penrhyn in Wales too, spelling is slightly different but pronounced the same. The similarities between Welsh and Cornish don't end with the language either as Cornwall is quite similar geographically to the Llyn peninsula in North West Wales.
I don’t know if you will see this but I’m going to study at Penryn in January...I’m so nervous ..is it easy getting accommodation in penryn?what should be my budget monthly for accommodation? Besides I would love to make friends with anyone interested here please
Awww! Don't be nervous, it's great town with an excellent student population. Our son rented in Penryn while he studied at Tremough. He paid about £300 per month for his room. I am sure you will settle in and have a ball! Sarah :)

Thanks yet another great walk,a place we haven't visited, talking of bowls clubs with great views our favourite is st ives, happy days spent there
Lovely little explore, with lots of great historical bits to ponder!
My home town. Lovely to see my old house and where I used to live and play as a child. :)
Lovely video again ,
Thanks both, keep up the good work 👍🥟👍🥟👍🥟
Thank you! Will do!
Fabulous! Thank you (a very quiet looking Penryn)
Our pleasure! Filmed on a Sunday!! Sarah :)

That is a coincidence!! Sarah :)
Definitely deserved a 10 out of 10..!! Brilliant video..
The size of some of those front doors show how tiny people were a few centuries ago. Thanks 😊
Totally agree - we are traditional Cornish folk so no problem for us! Sarah :)
Fantastic walk! You bring the history of these ancient Cornish towns to life, and what a beautiful streetscape Penryn has :) Your guide book to the history of the town is a gem of a find. I think a lot of those old cottages are student accommodation for the Uni! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails They all look very tidy for students...maybe times are achangning! ;)

No worries! Sorry for the late reply! Sarah :)
Such a fantastic video again, I’ve never been to this place but your video makes me want to visit

Well worth an explore, very rewarding! Sarah :)
LFascinating thank you. L couldn't walk the trail but thoroughly enjoy following your walk and listening to what you have found out

I think this is a stand out town for the age of the buildings, and I must admit to loving the heritage that we have here in this country! Sarah :)
Fascinating video thoroughly enjoyed thank you.
Our pleasure!
Looks like a good place to visit hopefully I be going to Cornwall this year and happy new year Andy and Sarah.

I bet there is a good pasty shop! We were filming on a Sunday so no doubt it was shut! Sarah :)
