CGI has it's place, but nothing can beat practical effects and animatronics like this big guy. Hopefully after the new Star Wars we'll get an increasing number of filmmakers that wanna go this route.
This creature is fucking awesome. When i look at it i feel really sad that modern cinema goes the easy way with computer graphics instead of this kind of pure practical magic and awesomeness. ='(((
I'm so in love with practical effects, and they keep getting more amazing even as movies move away from them. I still think there's a place for them though. They're at a point where they can make turtles and raccoons look just as real as their human counterparts, but there's just something magical about a real creature standing there interacting. JJ Abrams seems to get that for Star Wars. Hopefully that's the start of a trend. If Jurassic World doesn't have an animatronic t-rex, I'll be very sad.
Are you shitting me 7 weeks in total from design to creation to make this thing? That's fucking awesome. This is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen at comic con.
The coolness of this is off the scale. I'd love to see practical effects make a big come back in Hollywood. CGI is cool and all but there's just something magical about practical effects!
This was amazing. I want to see more from them. I remember years ago when Nintendo came out with the Wii they build a "robot" guy that toured around doing interactive promotion. He was like 10 feet talk and blew me away. I'm a sucker for puppets!!!
CGI should only be used to _enhance_ practical effects, or where practical effects can't be used at all. Thankfully, a lot of big filmmakers still understand this - Guillermo del Toro being a good example. He once said that if CGI is used correctly, you never even notice it's there.
I don't hate CGI in movies, I understand there are just certain shots you can't get without using computer animation. However, a movie like the first Jurassic Park still holds up to this day, because it's a perfect blend of CGI and Stan Winston practical effects. Seriously, watch that movie again if you haven't in a while. It's amazing how it can still thrill and inspire. Such a perfect action/adventure movie.
I've been in love with practical effects ever since I was a kid. Tom Savini anyone? Stan Winston was an awesome pioneer too. Thanks for bringing this to us Jess. Very cool behind the scenes look at that creature.
Am I crazy or Is Matt Winston also an actor?? I swear I have seen him in a few movies and tv shows. Also, that Bodock beast was incredible to see in real life. So cool.
Cgi has obviously gotten better over the years and it's obviously being overused, but what has surprised me the most about current movie effects is how much better these costumes/makeup/animatronics look (whenever they are actually done, that is).
wow. i was thinking "no way are there 4 people inside there"...either it's way more crammed than it looks on camera, or the thing is much bigger than it comes across...probably a bit of both
That creature only proves that big movies dont need CGI even though he does not look all that real im sure a little CGI would make him look real enough, instead of going full CG
Maybe after lots of CGI movies, I am over loaded, but LOVE this touchable, huge, moving creature. The quantity of people necessary to give this creature "life" is surprising. The quantity of humanity need to be inside the creature is astounding. I am guessing that part of that job's application process is height limitation along with no claustrophobia issues. Going to check out the site: www.thescene.com/wired
She is terrified of anthropomorphic animals... FIRE HER NOW... every time I see her she is proving there is not a nerdy or dorky bone in her body. So she is a pretty face... that is all... >_>
That Creature is Ridiculously Awesome!!! I would love to see more practical effects like that in movies.
Saw this creation at Comic Con. I LOVE these guys!

this is what gives old movies so much personality, practical effects, this is amazing and believable, great job.
"Sooo, do you want to see inside our creature?" = best Comic-Con come-on ever.
CG is a great thing, but I miss the old days of practical effects. It's possible to have both and I hope it will make a comeback
This creature is fucking awesome. When i look at it i feel really sad that modern cinema goes the easy way with computer graphics instead of this kind of pure practical magic and awesomeness. ='(((
I think "where the wild things are" had a great blend of piratical effects and CGI effects
That is so freaking awesome. Practical is so boss. I love your job Jess. Thanks to you and Nerdist for giving us the tour.
I'm in love with this. I really hope Animatronics will find their way back in many many movies
Great fun. Awesome work you guys!!

David Richins JW hardly had a T-rex at all :(

That looks awesome! It makes me more excited for the practical creatures and sets in the new Star Wars movie.

It's amazing those guys inside didn't die from heat stroke. It was HOT in San Diego this past weekend.

That was really cool. If Hollywood used more of these it would also create more jobs. Which is always a plus.

Fascinating conglomeration of engineering and puppeteering.
If it was only built in five weeks imagine how good they can do in a year. They could make anything!!!
Amazing detail
Jess genuinely enjoyed that experience
That is so awesome. Love practical over CGI. Not saying CGI is bad but it doesn't beat the real thing.
totally kickass
Built in only five weeks? Holy sh!t.
IKR. I was guessing several months.
adorable!! squeeeeee!
I wish movies would use more practical effects than CGI. It looks so much better.
Ok, I think I may need one of these.
Totally fracking awesome! I'll ALWAYS prefer practical effects over CGI any day of the week.
Am I crazy or Is Matt Winston also an actor?? I swear I have seen him in a few movies and tv shows. Also, that Bodock beast was incredible to see in real life. So cool.
Definitely reminds me of Falkor for sure!
Giant creatures is Dope
Great vid

So cool
That's insane! How do you build something like this in just a month!? Wow.
It's like the most uncomfortable Voltron ever. I would love to learn to do stuff like this
Cgi has obviously gotten better over the years and it's obviously being overused, but what has surprised me the most about current movie effects is how much better these costumes/makeup/animatronics look (whenever they are actually done, that is).
7500 hours holy smoke! thats a serious project
I love Animatronics! I am so tired of CGI shit in movies. BRING BACK THE PUPPETS!
that is just soopa fucking cool!!!
Jessica, you can always climb the ladder.
2:42 I take pixels to cons. Check out my pixelated costumes! Google: "Daniel Cattell"
I want one
wow. i was thinking "no way are there 4 people inside there"...either it's way more crammed than it looks on camera, or the thing is much bigger than it comes across...probably a bit of both
Lol 4 ppl inside
1:25 ...and here's dudebro Viggo Mortenson on Nose. Give him a nice round of applause.
Long Live Practical Effects!!!!

Nerdy thorthunder out☺😎
What advanced technology. 20 people inside and out operating. You would think they xould coordinator these movements. I did just comment in this. Hmm

CM Punk!
looks like a 12 foot charr
Puppets are cool but probably dead. I'd like the new Star Wars to feature some puppets
