Maybe he abandoned his Christian beliefs, assuming he had any, but unfortunately the Trump cult is part and parcel of much white evangelicalism. They have weird justifications, such as "Trump is like King Cyrus, who was not a believer but delivered the people of God from captivity in Babylon." As other western countries have a strict policy of the independence of the judicial system, it would be impossible for elected officials to comment on any ongoing legal proceedings and still keep their jobs. It seems this division of powers doesn't apply in the US - another unique US difference.
