  • The Strymon Volante is simply the BEST vintage style delay pedal on the market! Unbeatable for rockabilly slap back and pretty much head and shoulders above the rest in a very important way. Watch this video and find out why! The track at the start is called “First Flight of the Machine” from my Home Made Space Machine album ( a solo guitar adventure! ) you can find the link below!

    The strymon approach to preserving the clean signal is the same in the Timeline. Thanks for the information!

    Great review!!... tech has made some remarkable headway. Sorry to date myself but I saw a copycat tape echo back in the late 60’s that used a short loop of recording tape with a few controls to adjust re re-played section of the recording. We thought THAT was incredible. Then we got transistor amps and thought they were incredible ..
    This delay really sounds as you described it.

      It’s pretty cool, I got to play a real tape echo again yesterday (a fulltone unit) and it’s pretty special but this is as close as you can get without hearing the tape machine whining lol!!

    I keep finding deeper reasons to love this pedal, really harnesses the great textures of slap back delay and modulation.

    I like that fellow rockabilly guitarists do reviews on pedals, since it's the style that I play mostly. :)
    I didn't get convinced with the sound, because of the echo being too much for me personally, but your playing is amazing :D
    I'll have a look into the pedal more deeper, I use a very simple pedal for the delay thing and I can recognize the thing where the signal gets changed a little with the delay on it, as if there's some edges gone. I had an old not that cheap pedal that I wasn't using because I thought it was so experimental that I didn't use it for delay at all but wanted space and ufo effects for funny noise. But since I was looking for a different pedal and thought, oh why not.. I picked up my old pedal again and gave her another chance and now I'm still very content with it. Even tho I sometimes buy delay pedals just to be able to get a space ufo noise sound under my feet.

      Thanks Wilhelm! Oh man if you’re happy with your pedal that is a good thing! I love the timeline for spaceship noises and all the alternative delay effects. It’s all good stuff!!

    Volante is amazing. The ability to stereo pan the hands so quickly, change the heads and amounts etc. it’s a great experience. I wish it had a screen like the timeline too for preset naming and exact bpm etc, but I love using it. It’s replaced the timeline on my board because it sounds better and I really never use the other timeline delay modes besides tape, dual and bucket. Meris LVX is on its way, will either use both or stick with the Volante.

    That is a nice pedal! Have you tried a mystery brain? That’s what I use. Having a preamp with the echo really gives a nice slap. That’s always been my biggest issue is getting a real slap with the echo.

    • @AdrianWhyte
      @AdrianWhyte  3 года назад

      I’ve always found the brain series pedals kind of lift and boost your mids and tops at a huge cost to your bottom end, I’m not sure if the mystery brain does that but it’s great in a band setting for getting through the mix, no good for me playing solo gigs as it takes out the round bottom end. Even my mxr eq only get used in a band setting for the same reason! I would love to try one of those though, I might have to see if any of my Melbourne compadres have one!

    I use a Danelectro BLT almost entirely just because it cost me $30 back in the day. Does the job though!. Would love to upgrade to this though - these seem about as good as it gets.

    • @AdrianWhyte
      @AdrianWhyte  3 года назад +1

      My first delay pedal was in fact a danelectro BLT! A story that still to this day annoys me: the bassist in my band had really long hair and wouldn’t travel without conditioner. For some reason it got stuffed in my bag, leaked, and ruined that pedal. I told him, but he never said boo. Not a sorry, nothing! They are cool pedals!

    Okay I have the Belle Epoch Deluxe.
    I find Strymon patches and Expression pedals (Riverside ) excellent.
    I got my Belle at Found Sound
    But I am curious as to the record level preamp and tape distortion.
    The expression pedal drives up the pre amp and tape distortion.
    Even Toe Up...The preamp improves the Tone for me.

      You’re in Melbourne? Nice. Great shop there at found sound! Are you talking about the belle epoch with the expression pedal? I like the look and sound of those!

      @@AdrianWhyte yeah with expression..its awesome I recommend watching Howard's videos.
      It has two expression modes.
      Heel down is like lowering the preamp and the delay a d you can deive the gaon up going toe down and get more delay.
      Is sick!
      But I love Volante... I think top Two for my ear

    • @AdrianWhyte
      @AdrianWhyte  3 года назад +1

      So my take on this discussion is that to my mind they are kind of apples and oranges - one is a vintage inspired boutique pedal and the other is a machine the imitates multiple old units down to very fine details. The cool news is I’m going to get a mystery brain too! And possibly another for a patreon giveaway 😎

    Why did you have to do this video!?!? I'd been looking into the Volante as well and been contemplating to buy it. I would need to break the bank and sell a lot of my pedals. What I find really cool about it is the possibility to have different type of tape delays and you can configure the heads etc. So you can quickly switch from a Echoplex type tape delays to a drum tape. It really seems to be a great pedal. Now, just how do I afford it?!

    The crazy thing is that the reason Strymon haters don't get along with any of their pedals is precisely because they claim it affects their dry signal. Your experience is obviously different.

    • @AdrianWhyte
      @AdrianWhyte  3 года назад

      Yeah I noticed that! tape echo will affect your dry tone anyway, it’s just this doesn’t take away from it in my opinion, or maybe it’s just got such a great output overall it works. It just feels right!
