Anathema are an incredible band live. Saw them in Dublin, Utretch, and Leeds acoustic show. I think The female vocalist Lee Douglas has an amazing voice. You must listen to Dreaming Light, The Lost Song part 2, Temporary Peace, Internal Landscapes, A Natural Disaster just amazing songs. I think you did far too much research on them before hearing song, they were originally Doom Metal but transitioned into ambient prog rock. Their live shows were amazing. The two Kavanagh brothers have worked with all sorts of modern prog artists, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Devin Townsend, Mike Portnoy etc. Give them another listen they have have some brilliant songs.

A great song, and a drastically different band from in the beginning. I love the vocals and the vocal harmony. Good sense of melody and atmosphere. What's not to like!

Such an amazing amazing band. Grew from being part of the uk unholy trinity of doom with Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride to prog rock masters. More of these please. The song Distant Satellites is my fave because it’s so different. That and the song Release from ‘a fine day to exit’, a song written about their dying mother (3 brothers in the band). I totally disagree about Lee - she is a fantastic singer and brought so much to the band - her brother John is the drummer so it’s a total family thing. This live album universal is just something you should blind buy because it’s fucking amazing! More Anathema please dude 🙏🤘

Check the acoustic rendition of Distant Satellites at a music shop in Köln in 2014 (just search for "distant satellites koln"). But don't look at them, look at the girl.

Please more anathema: flying, a simple mistake, one last goodbye, lightening song, natural disaster. All live versions

I love her vibrato. I often get the chills from it. So I have to completely disagree with you that it doesn't fit in. Then again, I don't really care for the "normal" vibrato showcasing by supposed great vocalists.

They sound like Deacon Blue on this!!!!!! It just seems to take forever to get going.....probably why Anathema sounds like a cream for piles!!!!(hemmoroids)😅😅

Once you hear the vibrato, it’s hard to not hear. Lol.
Now you know why I can’t categorize this band. Their early days when they toured with cannibal corpse, they were way different. It’s called doom metal and I don’t like those albums at all.
The recent story of this bad is quite sad. They ran into money issues during the pandemic like a lot of bands that rely on touring for their income. So they announced a breakup because they needed to find different income sources.
After that, I think it’s the curly hair guitarist who has been battling depression for years got a lot worse and tried to kill himself. Thankfully he survived and the band announced he’s getting help but it will be a long road to recovery.
I hope they can find a way to reunite someday. Their music is very different and can be very relaxing to listen to. Most of their recent stuff (post doom metal days) tend to start slow and have a buildup to where the wall of sound becomes massive. Some great guitar work blends in, beautiful harmonies with vocals and they always have the keyboards in the backgrounds to give it a fuller sound (obviously here is the orchestra).
The previous album to this was one the SW produced and really helped the band grow. One of the songs on there made it to my SW Pandora station about 13 years ago and that’s how I found them.

The vabrato reminded me of Feargal Sharkey for some very bizarre reason lol

What made you think this would be metal? It’s modern day prog rock.

Lol. I swear a ton of their songs deal with loss of people they loved so not a lot of happiness. Kind of like finding a happy song from Steven Wilson pre his Permeating days!
What I like about this band is the music doesn’t get too complicated at all but they can really fill it out with the way they blend everything. It sounds nice and full with the right tone that my brain likes.
