@@capuchinseven Which is weird, considering the standard i30 has it, but as soon as you get the N front part, its not avaible. And the i30N FL was advertized with it originally. Luckily I drive mine 90% of the time through city and rural roads, so I dont really need it.
Great review. I love your authenticity and the fun you have while driving. Nicely balanced by pointing out some of the faults. I’m definitely super keen to get one of these someday. I love my standard I30 as it is… but geez this car looks incredible
I tried all the hot hatches and really liked this. Pretty fast in a straight line and quite playful. Didn't end up buying it though. As far as driving on winding country roads the Focus ST just pipped it. The handling of the ST is just amazing, ford have created a remarkable chassis once again. Crazy good!
I was looking at the i20 but haven't driven manual before so leaning towards this even though the price is considerably higher. Unsure if it's worth getting a manual when I'll be mainly doing city driving.
I'm one of the many people stuck between an i30n DCT and a focus St. I'm stuck because I can get a focus st for 7 grand less and after driving both, I enjoy them both equally but I liked the St for interior quality over the i30 and the i30 for that amazing exhaust note. So what would you do Matt?
I’m the same. i30n definitely outperforms the Focus ST in a straight line, but the interior quality of the Focus is leagues better. I’ve got a Focus on order that isn’t meant to be built until mid November, so it might end up being a battle to see what I can get first
From what I get the focus st is better as a daily. Like quieter (road noise) and more comfortable. But I find the exhaust to be too quiet (auto version). Whereas we all know the i30n to be loud and crazy. But at the moment with the Australian market, 50+ grand for an i30n is heaps compared to the Ford now hitting low 40's even before negotiating.
Focus is a more refined experience. To be honest, if it was my money, I would take the i30 N. If nothing other than the Ford Focus ST is inherintely flawed as they ran out of budget during development - which is why it has its 7 speed auto. Either car is awesome, but the i30n is just amazing.
@@CarSauce Thanks for the reply Matt. You are by far the most relatable car journalist and my favourite. And it's great that your a Melbourne boy too. Cheers

Only question is, how does the drivers seat feel with the lack of lumbar support?
I wasn't willing to wait for the fastback, my hatch will be here in a week or so. Can't wait. I'm going from a 2012 Merc C250 wagon which I've loved but it's too perfect, I'm now after character. I didn't buy this car for the quiet comfort or interior quality. I would have kept my C250 if that's what makes me smile. I'm looking forward to the noise!
The i30N was always a cheaper yet just as fun if not more alternative to the Megane RS, but now that it's asking for the same sort of money, comparing the two which was the better $60k Aud hot hatch?
Thank you! Honestly I think it's better, but could be totally untrue. I just remember the prefacelift as having awful tinny speakers, but these are really good. ST has garbage speakers btw haha

Still shodding pirelli pz4's hn isn't good. I changed over to ps4s's but it still bunny hopped and wheelspun like a bast..d in the wet and the new version does too in other reviews. That's disappointing. Price has risen too much and in auto, the weight is also far too high! The e-diff was very good but the car is dry biased, in the wet it's disappointing. I went over to the GR Yaris, uk convenience pack spec with asymmetric 5's from the off! It's Sooooooo much better for my needs. Plus I'm getting a better specced car all round and far superior year round traction 😊 Interior build quality and aesthetics are far better, grip is on another level dry and in particular when wet, cold and greasy!! I'd score dry as N 7, GR 9 and wet as N 3, GR 10 for standing starts and lower speeds hard acceleration, rising to 5 vs 10, on the move. And that was with ps4s's on my N! Hyundai was a great car for my 3 years ownership, completely reliable and practical, it likes a drink but rewards with that exhaust, rarity on the road and dynamics, when it's dry!
@@Dave-gl6jb Definitely mate, as well as countless other cars, but few in the wet!😉 Type R would have been all round superior to N but it lost my selection on the larger footprint, slightly ott styling, lacking in exhaust noise and the fact it's only a 4 seater, yet a 5 door large hatch! If they had brought the R sport line out at the same time, I'd have probably taken a look and almost certainly been hooked😉
Oh yeah this thing has no grip from a start on the wet haha, but honestly I've found these new changes have really reduced the annoying axle tramp that was always happening in the prefacelift. It does it way less often!
I30N was there first go at a hot hatch and they nailed most of it. I almost got one few times mate. Then I heard about the auto and thought to myself should I give up the Manual life as the face lift looks a solid improvement on there first try. Then the even more Crazy GR Yaris came out of no where and I jumped on that Wagon. PS Like I have said before if I had more money would have one in a second. Just Enjoy your car. (Even a GTI a Matt)😋
@@CarSauce I'm sure the other mechanical improvements are significant but the axle tramp shouldn't be there in the first edition. They then tweaked the suspension shortly afterwards and have now done a facelift + with numerous more tweaks, yet it's still there and even in the dry, evidenced in the recent chasing cars review! And as for those p zero's. They were totally pants in the wet but the latest normal pz4 has apparently improved loads, including great wet grip except for aquaplaning which leads me to suspect that hyundai haven't updated the HN specific version which is identical visually?!😏

Still James if you see a N with Auto in the dry the GR got a challenger. Something Type R only dream.😎
@@Dave-gl6jb Definitely mate, as well as countless other cars, but few in the wet!😉
Type R would have been all round superior to N but it lost my selection on the larger footprint, slightly ott styling, lacking in exhaust noise and the fact it's only a 4 seater, yet a 5 door large hatch!
If only i hodled my crypto this year .............. next time maybe.
