Phil, I absolutely miss this from my high school days and I'm sorry about the stupid copyright claim. You have encapsulated the feeling of what Pokemon was like growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s. Very fun and in-depth reviews of everything Gen 1 is perfect for a "Gen-wunner" like me lol. Thank you dude!
Same here. I remember watching these back about… 10 years now…? His videos were really the first ones to do a retrospective on Pokémon as a phenomenon before DYKG came around. Are they edited greatly? Maybe not, but I still think he still did a good job on it. It brings back nostalgia for sure.
the pokemon series? those are my first real rpgs. the anime was already out. so when i must go to locations i watched the anime. as a guide.
the battle against blane yes, blane was epic. a tv version of the "final boss" theme.
I'm sorry the project died out before it's time, I rather love the illustration, they made these have SO MUCH LIFE. Thanks for doing what you could.
It's a shame, I can barely hear you over all the music and effects.
That, and he talks about 400 miles a second.
i know it's kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good place to watch new tv shows online ?
@Drew Thomas Thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it!!
@Miguel Raymond Happy to help xD
That’s a hilarious fake comment chain for an advertisement
Lmfao try again next time
These really captured the feel of growing up with Pokémon in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Still remember anticipating the next episode when these were still on going.
yellow was not hard.

yellow? ok.
boss 1 train nidoran till lv 11 it learns a move named double kick. defeat the boss now.

ok, he is really funny hahahahahahhahaahaha my girlfriend and me laughs great hahahah
Phil, I remember watching this when you first put these out back in the day, and I always loved your personal take on them because it encapsulates what so many of us Gen1ers experienced at that time.
As being one of the first Pokémon retrospectives that I watched before DYKG started taking over, I always came back to your videos. I greatly appreciate that you combined all your videos into one big one. Great job on all of it.
"My favorite ghost type is obviously haunter" A true chad.
lol why? I don't get it 😆
@@milespeterson8429 His profile pic is a gengar
Please come back! I've only discovered your channel and love all those old videos you made! Wonderful and Excellent quality!
Phil, I thought I'd lost your videos forever, like a distant dream. Thank you, so so much.
Hey man I use to watch this way back in the day this has got to one of favorite retrospectives still ahead of our time 14 years lster
I love the sketches shown in this video, they've got a lot of personality.
A great video man. I watch a lot of Pokémon videos and this one was very well done.
I love retrospectives, so I'm glad that I found this one, especially because of how you're adding your own experiences to it. You showed off the bedsheets and that's honestly a piece of merchandise that I still own and use. I guess the reason why I'm making note of that is because I wasn't sure if it was an official piece of merchandise and it's kind of heartfelt that I still own it after who knows how many years since it came out
Gotta respect the old ads. When would you ever see Rachel Lillis (Misty/Maylene) interact with Maurice LeMarche (Dizzy Devil/The Brain)? Never nowadays.
The last time I had seen a weird Pokémon anime marathon was on Cartoon Network back in 2012(?) and it was called “Pikachu-sident’s Day”marathon and was held to on president’s day.... I don’t keep track of the anime anymore but I still watch the movies.
This is just as much a record of the localization as it is of the actual games, and I’m here for it.
This was amazing to watch, thank you for your time and passion. This truly feels like a time capsule watching this today. Best wishes
Plus, you wanted a sequel to Pokemon Snap you GOT that sequel.
Always gonna be a fan of this.
This is fuckin wonderful! I couldn't find any vids on youtube that THOUROUGLY went over all of the first gen until now. You deserve more subs and views and all that stuff
I also don’t know how I’ve never seen your channel before now. Love your stuff bro hopefully you come back with a new contact soon
Beating Brock in Yellow is actually pretty easy. Catch Nidoran, it gets Double Kick at Level 12 and you can sweep his whole team.
I just beat brock in yellow, you have to think of catching on victory road is the thing. I went there to grind my pokemon to fifteen and then I saw a manky and squeezed lol
@@argenfargen Actually you don't. Nidoran can be found on Route 2 as well.
I still remember getting this for christmas 1997. Good times.
My favorite retrospect video ive seen
I'm finally going back and playing Gen 1 as someone who grew up around Gen 3 and 4 and didn't start playing the games till 5. Watching a bunch of retrospectives while I play and this is one of my favorites so far. Thanks for the insight man.
Nightshades evil
Is it just me or is this much more sped up compared to the original video?
Bro. I remember watching this on my blackberry pearl with 512mb of data and playing soul silver on my lunch break at work. God damn. 13 years. A true classic
Honestly one of the best retrospectives on the early gens you can find. Authentic and informative.
It's a shame that the audio quality suffered in this re-upload. If you ever wanted to come back and re-record this would be a definitive retrospective. But I also get that copyright strikes are not exactly easy to work around while keeping authentic background music.
yaaa i just started it and i love this content but i can barely hear anything.......
Sick video
Judging by how you describe your timelines, we're about the same age. I never saw these when they were originally uploaded, in fact I only first saw em today. Just wanted to say I miss this era of RUclips, you really sound passionate and like you love what you're talking about. Not trying too hard to be funny, not making jokes bashing the franchise for no reason in lieu of real criticism. The criticism you make is actually valid. You also surprisingly don't make the overly dated jokes that most people do now when talking about gen 1. This actually, weirdly, makes me nostalgic for 2010.
Also I like your art!
Bro I love how you have somewhere there with you the whole time
Hey man, I was psyched for that pocket Pikachu. I used to rewatch that promotional VHS to see it! Got my out and about using the pedometer function to help me make friends with my Pikachu. My classmates were jealous when I brought it the day we ran the mile in gym!
I can tell you exactly what parents were thinking during the Pikachu short.
When I was older, my mom and I got to talking about Pokémon the First Movie, and she told me she thought the short was the movie. Haha. She thought it was some kind of bizarre twilight zone shit and couldn't understand how we were enjoying it so much.
She was relieved when the actual movie began, although she still wasn't impressed.
please do this for gen 2? also do a gen 3 retrospective?
Hold up, is that a *Keystone* on Giovanni's ring? In the scene with him raising his fist in the wreckage after Mewtwo's escape? Like 10-15 years before Mega Evolution was a thing?
I myself am gen 1 of pokemon i remember i just started 4th grade when it aired oh man my friends i would talk about the show all the time in school in late 90"s and 2000"s
I was one of the one that got that commercial video about Pokemon. It was sent out to those who had Nintendo Power at the time.
Background is way too loud and sped up.. distracting to the point where I couldn't watch it
He was clearly using an emulator for a lot of the gameplay, and for some reason decided....for this kind of video... to use the Fast Forward button. Instead of just showing normal speed gameplay.
I'm also not sure, but it almost seemed like the region on his emulator was wrong, because the speed of that intro to the game played just a little too fast.
HONESTLY, it seems like the entire video was sped up. He's talking a mile-a-minute, the gameplay audio is sped up, the intro to the game was sped up. Like, it feels like he made a video, then just changed the speed to be just slightly faster. The whole video is at least slightly more watchable if you set the RUclips player speed to 0.9. Anything more than that and it's actually understandable, but it makes the dude sound drunk.
I have a handful of those pokemon burger king toys I found at a thrift store like 4 years ago. I have the nidoking, mew, cubone and geodude ones. I can't remember the others.
does Pokémon Snap on the n64 have shiny textures Pokémon?
I'll be honest, I thought this dude was just talking too fast. Then when the intro to the Game Boy game played, and it was ALSO too fast, I thought maybe I accidentally pumped my RUclips speed up a bit. Turns out, nope. I did not. This video is just too fast for absolutely no reason.
Slowing the video down to x0.9 is a little better. Anything lower than that and the dude sounds drunk. Though it does extend the almost 2 hour long video slightly.
Side question: Why use an emulator's fast forward function for THIS kind of video? You only needed small clips here and there. And even if you NEEDED to use the fast forward....why include the horrible sounding fast forwarded audio?
wasn't like this originally. he probably did it for the reupload to get around copyright bots.
Watching this in 2022 cause why not
why does this sound more natural at 0.95x speed????
You should update the old and continue til current Gen, would be great
Love this video buuuuut the Pokémon anime has 1,000+ episodes
Squirtle was always my 1st choice
Free battle was in bills backyard lol
He really said plant type.
Pero faltan los remakes y otras cosas porque pintan como la primera generación.
I can take your indifferent to ash
For the love of all that is fun, please turn the music down and slow your talking to a reasonable speed.
You just some feedback dude! Your voice is way too quiet at parts!
You're talking way too fast and you didn't balance the audio to music, hard to watch this
This was from 10 years ago! Lol He probably doesn’t have the master videos anymore from them either.
I used to play Blue on the bus when i was in elementary school and alot of other greats like Donkey Kong, DK Country, Super Mario Land 1 and 3 (Wario Land), do you prefer Pokemon Blue or Red? I think i enjoy the look and feel of Blue more.
“Couldn’t you just make the only ghost type Pokémon pure ghost type? Wouldn’t that have solved the problem?”
No. Because in gen 1 ghost wasn’t super effective against psychic like it should have been. Why? Who knows... Seems like an oversight but a really fucking obviously poor one.
Am I the only one who knew how to properly glitch Mew back in 1999? I used to roll my eyes at the other kids who kept going on about secret Pokémon and stupid rumors. I discovered the glitch by accident. After I got an Abra I had the wrong Pokémon at the top so I teleported away from the trainer battle and then I went and battled the guy with the Slowpoke to level up Pikachu and I teleported back and when I went back to the bridge I ended up getting into a battle with Mew. I used Pikachu’s Thunderwave and started throwing some balls and I ended up discovering the Mew glitch by accident at the tender age of 11.
His name IS Ash. It says so several times in Nintendo Power
Nope nope nope nope, the media factory card packaging was INFINITELY better. The Wizards of the Coast versions always felt simplistic, childish, cheap
ugh this shoe-horned comedy & animation is so not enjoyable
I was 2 minutes in the video and couldnt continue watching, music and effects are too loud and u cant hear him talk. Shame...
Terrible sound quality.
