Ibn Taymiyyah said (d.728): “There is no criticism upon the one who makes manifest the Madh-hab of the Salaf, and ascribes himself to it, and affiliates himself to it [by saying: I am Salafi], rather that ascription is accepted from him by consensus for indeed the madh-hab of the Salaf is nothing other than the truth.” (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 4/149)
We all are called by our Rabb Allah ﷻ as Muslims. So We Should proud of that identity & Always try to be best ambassador of Islam.
Shaykh Abdul Azeez bin Abdullaah Bin Baz رحمه الله :
"‘Indeed the Salaf are those of the best generations. So whoever follows their footsteps and continues upon their methodology then he is a Salafi. Whoever opposes the Salaf in this methodology then he is from the Khalaf (those who oppose the Salaf)"
Ibn Uthaymeen (rahimahullāh) was asked: “What is the intent of the term Salaf?” He responded: “The Salaf: Its meaning is those who preceded. Whoever precedes another, then he is a Salaf to him. However, when the term ‘Salaf’ is applied unrestrictedly, then it refers to the three virtuous generations: The Sahābah, the Tābi’een, and those who followed them. They are the Salaf As-Sālih (the Righteous Predecessors). And whoever comes after them and follows their Methodology (Manhaj), then he is like them, upon the Path of the Salaf, even if he comes later after them in time. That is because the term Salafiyyah refers to the Methodology (Minhāj) that the Salaf As-Sālih traversed upon, may Allah be pleased with them just as the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: ‘Indeed my Ummah will divide into 73 sects, all of them will be in the Fire except for one and that is the Jamā’ah.’ And in a narration, he stated about the Saved Sect: ‘Whoever is upon that which I and my Companions are upon.’ Built upon this, therefore, is the fact that the term Salafiyyah has a restricted meaning.
So, whoever is upon the Minhāj of the Sahābah, the Tābi’een and those who followed them precisely, then he is a Salafi, even if he lives our times. And this is now the fourteenth Century after the Hijrah.”
I call myself a Muslim - as simple as that
Allahu Akbar. Best answer
Alhamdulillah thank you sheikh
As Malaysian, I understand what he mean and feeling. Because Asharis- Maturidis always claim they also are ahli Sunnah and many Muslim countries use the same phrase of ahli Sunnah wal jamaah means they must creed of Asharis- and/or Maturidis. If you make discussions with peers who studying about Islam formally of course they will talking about creed(aqeeda). In my country mostly they will ask are you believe in doctrine of rububiyah, uluhiyya and asma Wal sifat or 20 character of Lord by imam Sanusi. If you believe like Salafi or Athari (rububiyah, uluhiyyah and asma wal sifat) they will calling you as Wahhabi or anthropomorphic guy and not part of ahli Sunnah. This situation is more oppression if they look ruler Fatwa if we reply their argument. There's no any harm, but if you meet religious/Ashari there always happens. It's different in the many Gulf States which mostly of them never hear the word of Wahhabi. I always face this situation. I always tell I'm Muslim and creed of Sunni which follows Koran and Sunnah, then more detailed questions will be arisen like above.
May Allah forgive me. Insha Allah from today I stop 🛑 calling myself such name.
In my case is people that call me so assalafi as a name.
I will make them stop it.
I call myself a muslim. I follow the school of thought called Quran.
Alhamdulillah
جزاك الله خيرا
This quote from Sheikh Uthameen is strange, since I've read fatwas of Lajnah Daimah stating that it is permissible to do so. Sheikh Albani even said that it's recommended to say so & wrote a small book on it as well.
But if it isn’t from the sunnah then we shouldn’t do it
I'd rather tell others I AM A MUSLIM than call myself I AM A SALAFI. Don't want to sound like I am in a SECT.
It's not permissible
You have to read the context. When there's a lot of ahlul bid'ah around you it won't help if you call yourself a Muslim only
You all do realize not a single Muslim school says they do not follow the Salaf, right…? Lol
I know Salafi... But what is Athari?
Athar means narration brother, an athari is one who follows the narrations and is basically salafi
narration basically people of narration
Same thing in this context. Aqeedah of the salaf. It comes from following the athar (reports/narration)
Shaykh Ibn Utheymeen retracted his statement I think.
Can you please post the reference if you find it in shaa Allah
