    I'm currently in college for programming and design in New York and no-one I've learned from or spoken to has ever mentioned Webflow, it's always about WordPress. I've gotten the chance to build my portfolio with Webflow and I love it, it's probably the most fun way I've been able to build a website so far. I'm amazed it hasn't caught on with the masses yet. You're right, learning it now is definitely getting ahead.

      The problem with Webflow is that you can only make simple to advanced stuff with it. Once there is a certain amount of complexity you just cannot use it where as wordpress has a lot more capabilities. Thats why wordpress is used for complex sides and webflow is used for simple sides or one pagers. There is not a single really complex side that gets powered with webflow afaik. Thats an important thing that a lot of the "Webflow Ambassadors" forget: Wordpress has a higher level of complexity because it was build for much more than just simple One Pager. Once Webflow reaches the capabilities of Wordpress it will be as complex to learn as Wordpress!!

      Oliver P of course! you are absolutely right! It is by no means the best solution out there. There are a lot of Use Cases where other solutions like the ones you mentioned are far better. I just hate it when people say that WordPress is Not capable of offering a hassle free workflow to create a simple Website in a Coupe of hours. I can create a simple Website in WordPress in the same time as in Webflow.

      WF founder here - The number of webflow templates out there (all built visually in Webflow) compare well with the most popular templates that are built on top of wordpress. webflow.com/templates has a list of them you can see. The Visual CMS is definitely powerful in that you can create all sorts of data-driven sites. e-commerce and user systems will eventually be built on top of the CMS, which will bring the number of use cases Webflow solves up to par with Wordpress. And it will be an order of magnitude simpler to use/setup. I'd try building something on Webflow, then you may see how easy it is to add additional functionality!

      I'm in New York and teach a class in WebFlow for my Web Design class at Pratt Institute SCPS. (Pratt also offers a separate course dedicated to WordPress. Then for my Web Development class we go old school, and build with code ;-) Tech tools change rapidly and many universities have to get approval years in advance to get new tech into the syllabus or in the computer lab. Which school are you at?

    I don't like comparing Wordpress and Webflow. To me, Wordpress is like a custom built PC, that you can change the parts whenever you want, and make it more powerful. Webflow CMS is like most Apple computers. It works super well, and is easy to use, but you get the product in a certain way, and you can barely add new stuff to it, or replace some parts. Also, paying extra money per month just to get the CMS function bothers me. Don't get me wrong, I love Webflow and uses it almost everyday, but I will probably never use their CMS feature except if they make it an open source platform, and add some sort of a plugin marketplace (I'm pretty sure that's coming soon).

    • @FluxAcademy
      @FluxAcademy  7 лет назад +7

      But people compare apple to pc all the time so why not compare webflow to wordpress? (BTW - I like your metaphor since apple is one of the most valuable companies in the world, which means that this product philosophy works.)

    • @noxpcarfix9689
      @noxpcarfix9689 7 лет назад +13

      Because most of the time people compare Mac to PC trying to tell which one is the best. But in reality, it's all about the kind of work you need to do, softwares you need and which OS you prefer. To me, it's a bit the same thing with Wordpress VS Webflow. Sometimes, Wordpress will be the best option, and other times, it's going to be Webflow. I think that Webflow will be huge one day. This tool is amazing. It's crazy how fast you can build websites with it. Keep up the awesome work Ran. I love your videos! :)

    Such a good video! I'm outside this field of work (architect) but have had a admiration for web design of some time. I've never found time but more importantly understood where to start, until now. Again, these types of videos, that explain seemingly easy stuff, basic industry know-how to noobs like me are fantastic!

    There is no video/tutorial concerning the domain transfer. They request google domain but I don't have that in my country yet. Maybe a video about it would be very helpful as I found it quick difficult at first to setup all those DNS setting they required for to work. Also a video about the web hosting would be great.
    Anyway great video as well mate. Learning so much from you since last year you start the vlogs :)

      Been building with wordpress for years now and no longer like the boundaries I am tied to with it. Webflow allows me to design in complete freedom and utilize the platform with my skills in HTML, CSS, and JS to streamline my design as opposed to being confined to Wordpress themes.

    Are you charging per hour? Why Webflow design and development should cost less because of production speed? If your customer get the same it must cost like Wordpress, I think.

  • @KenmoreChalfant

    I think something LIKE Webflow will be the future. I don't know if Webflow will necessarily be it. People keep saying Wordpress is more customizable, flexible or powerful. That's true, but for me it's like fumbling in the dark; it's still not a pleasant experience. I'm not a fan of PHP and definitely not a fan of WP's code style.
    Webflow may not give you as much flexibility in hosting and plugins, etc, but what it does give you is the most powerful visual designer with no admin work at all. Huge benefit. That being said, with the prices they are asking I would probably like at least the OPTION to self-host. The non-portability makes me uneasy.
    I think eventually we'll have something that's the best of both worlds.

    Don't think Webflow CMS & WordPress can be compared. I have Webflow for testing, learning & experimenting but unsure why WordPress is considered to be so inferior. I might be bias but I don't think WordPress is that bad. It's like any software or platform, it depends how you use it, what you use it for & your knowledge/skillset in that platform.

    • @FluxAcademy
      @FluxAcademy  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Simon! I was thinking about dedicating the video to you actually, and talking about you but somehow forgot while recording.
      I do think that both platforms can (and should) be compared since they both offer CMS websites. I do not think that WordPress is inferior however. I think both has pros and cons. WordPress is more mature, has larger community and plugin base, and there are lots of things you can do only with wordpress (at the moment). HOWEVER, I do think that for lots of websites going with Webflow is much much faster to develop, and easier for the client to maintain. I do think that you have a bias (just like I do for webflow), but I really wish you would give it a go, since I truly think it can increase your performance 10x. (of coures I'm not sure exactly what websites you're building, so it might not be possible, but I have the feeling like you haven't really given it a try)

      Flux What about eCommerce websites? Would Webflow CMS be able to cope with those types of sites? Webflow CMS would definitely suit some of my clients but not all.

      I did an e-commerce website in Webflow for the HTML/CSS/JS part few months ago, and paid a programmer to develop a Wordpress/Woocoomerce theme out of it. It's working really well that way too. So even if you work with Wordpress, Webflow can be really useful too ;)

    Hi Ran, a couple of weeks ago i discovered the elementor page bulider ( elementor.com). It is a page builder for Wordpress. When i use all the shortcuts that i know ( 1-click install, copy entire wordpress installations as blueprints for the next site), i am as fast as any other Webflow User. So, to say that wordpress is waaaayyy slower and webflow is so much better is just wrong! Maybe you checkout elementor.com and try it ( also the pro version is even better). I know that you won´t switch but it might helps to get a new perspective on wordpress vs webflow. I really hate it when people bash wordpress just because they don´t know all the awesome tools that would prevent all the stress and anger they face...

    • @FluxAcademy

      Hey! I actually heard about it, met their CEO and we set up to do an Elementor - Webflow dual to see who's faster :) but honestly - I haven't really tried it, and I heard it's good. So, yeah, I do need to give it a try.

    Once webflow adds dynamic data binding.. that will be the end of front-end developers as we know it.

    • @MrAndi1281
      @MrAndi1281 7 лет назад

      Can you please explain to me why you think that is? Is it "productivity overload" ;).. or something like that? I am really curios to know about this...

    • @CristianLagosArias
      @CristianLagosArias 7 лет назад +1

      I do not agree, designers work will now include implementing web pages (maybe even webflow ends up being a standard program for designers) meaning that you will no longer need to know code in order to develop and implement web pages. Therefore, Front-end developers will no longer be programmers unless front-end pivots into something different. (might be developing the middleware between css/html & node servers or using JS for something in between the web and the back-end)

  • @YisraelGrimes
    @YisraelGrimes 7 лет назад

    I (literally) lol'ed at 2:10. hahaha.
    Any word on when Webflow will implement a mobile-first option? I know you can optimize things for mobile, but hate the desktop first mentality. I do think Webflow is incredible and I'm excited for what the next few years holds in this kind of space. We've actually been kicking around the idea of implementing an "import Webflow" feature into our CMS platform for our reseller accounts. Then you'd have the best of both Wordpress and Webflow worlds :)

    • @FluxAcademy
      @FluxAcademy  7 лет назад +1

      Don't think they'll ever implement mobile first as technically CSS cascades down from desktop to mobile, but you can still design with a mobile first approach.

    • @YisraelGrimes
      @YisraelGrimes 7 лет назад

      CSS just cascades down the file. So you can start with mobile and only include things as-needed. This may seem arbitrary, but when you consider that the majority of traffic will be on mobile it can become important. For example: Say I want to have a background video on the site, obviously that wouldn't be great for a phone and using data, desktop first development means that I'm loading the video even if the mobile user never sees it. Mobile first means that if they are on mobile, I can load a solid background or even a smaller background image without ever sending them the video. And only if they are using desktop I can tell their browser to load the background video or a higher-res image.
      I had read somewhere that it was in the works for them and I think it would be really awesome to see it happen!
