  • The Ram Rebel I had as a loaner recently had a lot going on in its truck bed. It had the new-for-2020 Multifunction Tailgate (certainly designed to compete with GMC's MultiPro tailgate), the Ram Box system, a bed divider, and a factory tonneau cover. Here I take a look at each of these parts and give my take on how useful you might find them. =

I just picked up my new RAM last week. I had ordered it the way I wanted with the RAM Box and multifunction tailgate. Researched before I ordered and saw that a full sheet of plywood, drywall, etc. would fit between the sides just fine. Couldn't be happier with my truck! Store trailer hitch, jumper cables, tow strap, tie down straps, and other stuff in one side. Still have a lot of room left in that side, plus the whole other side I can put things in. The tailgate is really nice if you have something heavy in the bed. No more leaning over to pick it up and hurting my back! Plus I have the step that pops out to climb up in the box. Very handy! The RAM Box takes up that wasted space around the wheel wells and puts it to good use!
I also ordered from RHR the tailgate seal strip. It's a weather-strip I'll put in the space between the tailgate and bed, also on top where the 2 sides of the doors meet. That should make it pretty sealed up. I didn't get the factory bed cover as I wanted something more secure that couldn't be cut through with a knife. My tri-fold hard cover should be here next week. It should also seal better than the cover you have, at least from the reviews I've seen on that cover.
Love my new RAM 1500 Limited! Now if I can just figure out how to program that 12" display to make my breakfast in the morning it will be absolutely perfect! LOL

This review is what someone who doesn't use a truck for a living might think. As a contractor, being able to store tools and misc items in the rambox is extremely handy - literally what got me to buy a Ram vs my previous Fords. The odd shape around wheel wells really isnt all that usable - sure that space comes in handy at times, but really all you need is room for a 4x8 sheet of plywood or drywall. Give me lockable weathertight storage that eliminates a bed-mounted tool box any day.
Being able to reach into the bed using the split tailgate without reaching over the tailgate seems a very handy option - is it worth an extra $995? I'm tempted to say yes, especially for shorter people. Climbing up onto ever-taller pickup beds with heavy boots and jeans is a pita even for taller folks - the split tailgate allows you to use the bumper as a step.
The tonneau cover doesn't fit well (as shown in the video) - buy a good after-market cover if that's what you want.

I agree. This reviewer must be a first-time truck owner and doesn't know what a truck is used for. If you need your bed to be "airtight", stick with a car or SUV. They were designed for the purpose of being airtight... not a truck bed. Another point to mention, the RAMBox does not take away cargo space as he mentioned, it adds functionality to an unusable space vs having small-item rolling around in the cab of the vehicle. Why should you purchase a metal toolbox for the truck if RAM has a means of configuring how to store the items for you and is easily accessible on both sides of the truck with locks, light, and power options? None of the other truck manufacturers come close to offering a built-in toolbox with the exception of Honda Ridgeline's Inbed cargo storage. These options are only exclusive to 3rd party vendors as an additional cost provided you know how to secure the toolbox to the bed without having it jump off the side of the truck or flip over damaging the contents of your cargo. Kudo's for other manufacturers for designing their own unique tailgate with a creative way of accessing the bed of your vehicle. Without competition to sell a product is what makes or breaks innovation.

The Ram Boxes are great when towing. I put my hitch bars and associated items in one box. Other box holds fluids, jumper cables and misc. Regarding the bed extender, they had to stop provisioning trucks to use it due to legal issues. The tailgate function is similar to the old station wagons where the back gate either dropped down or open like a door. Good reuse of an old idea.

From my experience the GM tailgate is useless. The Ram one actually has function. Ram boxes are the best option I have ever had on a truck. You will find uses for them. A Ram 1500 bed with ram boxes is wider than an F150 is between the humps. I do a lot of hunting, hauling, and general work where I have to load the bed with coolers, tools, and gear. I have never wished I didn't have the ram boxes. Everything still fits.

I think the reason you got so much dust in your bed area is that on the ends of the tailgait with the rambox there is about an inch gap at the top. I noticed this last night on my friend's new ram. I can stick most of my hand into this gap with the tonneau and tailgait glosed. If you look closely at this video, you can see the two rectangular gaps at the ends of the tailgait where the tailgate meets the bed sides. I think they had to put that gap there for the swing of the barn door tailgate, but the regular tailgate has the gap as well. You can see the rectangular gap at 3:46.

    • @ryanwwest

Are all of these multi-function tailgaits from different brands like this? Certainly seems like a big drawback for trying to keep things inside clean when the bed cover is supposed to do that.

You can order the Bed extender grommets and knock those plastic covers off, that's what I did with my 2019. Then you'll have a bed extenders like the 4th Gen Rams had. Evidently the bed design retains much of the the 4th gen engineering, but Ram decided to not offer it on the 5th Gen trucks. I had read that Ram discovered that the bed extender interferes with seeing the 5th gen brake lights or something. By the way, I love my Ramboxes. They are so convenient to throw in a few bags of groceries or whatever. It prevents it from rolling around the back bed or back cab, or getting underfoot if you have back seat passengers.

when i first saw the split tailgate, i didn't see the point of it, but after seeing your video and some of the points you made... i'm thinking. My little trailer the hitch is real low and wouldn't bother the tailgate but wondering if an RV gets in the way. Def easier to reach and even climb into the bed with the tailgate open side to side. it seems that you can hold one of the sides for support in order to use the bumper as a step. good for older folks or out of shape peeps like me. Since it does flip downwards as a regular bed... it doesn't seem like a bad idea having this function.

The bed still holds a 4X8 sheet of drywall or plywood (although it sticks out over the tailgate). My next Ram will have the split tailgate AND the Rambox. Would never buy anything but a RAM, and will ONLY buy one with the Rambox. Hoping that next time, I can afford the 4 corner suspension and Hemi with e-Torque as well. Mine is a 2015, but everyone marvels at how nice it rides. Of all full sized pickups, only a RAM has coil spring rear suspension, so it rides like a luxury car. Can't haul as much weight or tow with a heavy weight on the hitch, but I never do anyway. My Rambox is NOT warped, nor shaped like a banana, and I bought the set of dividers. Next truck, I am making my OWN dividers from 1/4" plywood. These have curled up a bit.

I noticed your Bed Divider is turned upside down. The rubber pads should be setting on the floor of the bed rather than facing upward, so as to raise and protect the Bed Divider from the abrasiveness of the spray-in-bed liner. I personally sought out the Rambox Cargo System, which I think is a functionally innovative design. If you have ever worked out of a truck bed "tool box" having to climb in and out of the back of the truck to retrieve tools (unless your 6'6"ft.), this is a time saving and agronomical set-up! A real pleasure to work out of!

3:25 Cue big brother stuffing kid brother into said ramboxes and shutting the lid. I know from experience, I did horrible things to my little brother.
As for the multifunction tailgate leaking dust (and water) I've found that it isn't the split itself but rather the corners of that frame that the tonneau cant cover that lets basically anything into the bed. Dust, water, small wooden sticks, wasps etc etc.. all gather in the beds behind multifunction tailgates.
Also, the bed divider comes with the Ram Box bed. If one gets that specific bed divider on a truck without ram boxes it doesn't work, it needs that rib structure on the side of the Ram Box bed to lock in place.

The plug in, in the ram box never made much sense to me. Now I do think it should be there, but when I think of what I could plug into such a low power thing that would also fit in my ram box, that I couldn’t already plug inside my cabin, I come up totally short. Genuinely confused. Cool idea but those ram boxes hardly have a flat surface in them, so whatever you do plug in better be small or shaped like a cereal box. So…I decided to just buy a F150 Powerboost so I could plug in my house if I wanted to. 😂 Not being pithy, I was choosing between the 2025 RAM limited or a 2024 F150 Platinum last week and I bought the F-150. The 60/40 split gate frame interferes with the hardware to use the extender as you attempted to display. It is a great function if you have the standard gate; obviously limited when you don't have hardware.
The Mopar tonneau is a very poorly executed design and there are MANY of much better alternatives at a lower price and better quality for third party.
The RamBox is very useful and if you cut out some dividers (many templates and 3D instructions available online) makes it awesome. You are correct that it is not for everyone since it does eat away at bed space but you can STILL fit a 4x6 or 4x8 sheet (if extended) without issue. When I take home a doggie bag, it keeps from smelling up the cab, especially if you have to make a detour.
GREAT EXPLANATION AND OVERVIEW OF THOSE FEATURES!!!

The tailgate is really heavy and cumbersome and requires two STRONG men to get it back on. Luckily, I did find a fix for this.

Great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts. This was helpful to me.
Side note, @ 4:55 you mention the multifunction tailgate that gmc came out with. Ford was actually the first recent manufacturer to put variation into the tailgate use. But I love that others are doing stuff too. Competition makes us all better. And I like the GMC and Ram versions more than the Ford.

The multifunction tailgate is a great feature in my mind. I’m often putting 60 lbs bags of concrete in the back. Those or any other heavy items not having to lift and drag or roll them over the tailgate just seems a lot more convenient.
Saying that and seeing how the frame mounts to the truck I’m wondering if I can purchase this and add it after the fact. Finding a used ram with that tailgate is nearly impossible. Without it being a super expensive limited trim that is.

Cool. Now lets get some aftermarket goodness that can add a split tailgate to any of the full size trucks. I would like that.

Hey that's a good idea. I'm surprised aftermarket tailgates aren't a thing, especially with how huge the truck market is.

@@ChrisONeillUSA Right!? The swing out tailgate just makes it so much easier to load cargo into the bed without having to reach over the depth of the tailgate. Especially heavy cargo.

Also you have to realize that the ram is naturally one of the widest trucks on the roads, they are very oversized so there will be more bed space then you realize even with the ram boxes

Due to new laws, the tailgate extender became illegal and FCC is recalling ALL of the attachments from the box area. Now it’s just a bed divider but you can buy aftermarket attachments!

It's a shame. They have some really cool ideas and are willing to market in a really fun way, but once you look below the surface (literally and figuratively), you realize that's about all they have. Why build a 700 horsepower family sedan? Because you can't build one with 300 horsepower that's remotely competitive. That said, this Ram has a great interior that checks out in terms of initial quality, at least. I'll show it off in another video I'll be posting some time in the next week.

Just because it looks nice when it's new doesn't mean it's a "quality" product. It also doesn't mean it'll last 4/5+ years from now. Even before Fiat & Chrysler merged they both separately had their own quality issues.

The ram boxes seem awesome cause that wheel well area is normal wasted area and if you have a tool box that’s wasted space too, but this way it makes the most out of all the space that would be wasted

Can buy dividers online or at dealers - need the mounting kit as well as the divider for use as a bed extender. Oddly, Ram is lousy at marketing the ramboxes and details are unclear how to order them properly - most dealers are still clueless a decade after they've been released.

Go buy a Prius buddy!!.....You have no clue what you're talking about with regards to Trucks...two of the greatest inventions for a truck, are the ram boxes for lockable storage, but I guess you'd prefer just a useless wheel well in the bed of the truck instead and the split tail gate for loading and unloading items...the ram boxes still allow a full sheet of drywall to be placed in the bed....try placing a 60 pound bag of cement in your bed without the split gate...you have to place the bag on the tail gate, then jump up on the tail gate and then lift the bag of cement to place it in the bed of the truck..and the dirt got into your bed from your cheap mopar tonneau cover that doesn't seal, not the split tail gate... buy an aftermarket tonneau cover..I find it funny you whine about the split gate but use the split gate to access and unhook the tonneau cover and I bet you use the split gate to access groceries in the back with the bed divider !!!
