Yes. It is worth the hype. I am a Chinese currently living in Shanghai. I remember clearly when the first high-speed rail in China became operational in 2008, there were exactly the same doubts among the public. Guess what, all such doubts were gone after only 2 to 3 years. Now we Chinese people just LOVE high-speed rails and are yelling for more.

I love high-speed rail. Takes around 20 minutes to go through security, check-in and boarding. And when the train stops, I can get off right away. I have my luggage with me and I don't need to worry. Even if high-speed rail was 2 hours longer than flying, I would still choose high-speed rail. Only if it is not feasible or the rail travel time is too long would I fly. Congratulations Indonesia.
Definitely prefer HSR even it takes 4 hours more than flight. I'll say the boundary between either getting HSR or flight is the total milage at 1200km, in China as an example. Let alone the pinpoint accuracy of HSR punctuality, mostly well controlled within 1 minute.
Congratulations to Indonesia! I've travelled from Jakarta to Bandung by car. It is commonly told that the journey by car is 3 hours, but that is not correct. It takes 1 hour to get out of Jakarta travel jam to freeway, then 3 hours on freeway and follow up 1 hour traffic jam into Bandung city. A total of 5 hours. It's definitely worth the money to have the high-speed railway. Debt Trap? It's all Western Media narrative.
@@jaredgalvin a loan, much less international one, is based on mutual agreement. if China exercises its rights upon Sri Lanka’s default based on said agreement, how is that a trap? is it a ‘trap’ if you default your mortgage or car and the bank takes it away from you? nobody forced you to take on that loan. the terms and conditions are detailed in the fine print piece of paper you signed. you’d be very naive if you think Western institutions are more lenient or ethical on loans. google the imfamous pic of Michel Camdessus and Soeharto in 1998. that’s how Indonesia was bent over (or ‘debt-trapped’ if we use the more popular term today) by a not-Chinese lender.

The problems and delays of this project are insignificant when you considered that here in California, we tried to build high speed rail between San Francisco and Los Angeles for over a decade and nothing significant has been done. It may never be built. So kudos to kudos to Indonesia and China for accomplishing this.
The difference is USA is a democracy, all must be high standard and must hold for at least 1 century. it needs to be feasible. Indonesia HSR will need 100 years to recompensated.

According to another commenter, Indionesias HSR is 25% funded by the Indonesian government and hence the debt is 5.25 billion with interest of 2% for 40 years. While for India, Japan has offered 81% of the cost as a loan with 0.1% interest rate for 50 years, and a moratorium on payments for 15 years. As expected China as expected has given a commercial loan to Indonesia, while Japan has essentially given India aid/subsidy with its generous terms, so India has benefited much more.
Yes. It is worth the hype. Sure there were delays and setbacks along the way especially with 2 to 3 years of pandemic but it was accomplished in the end. These projects are often fraught with unexpected uncertainties. The next phase should be easier. SCMP should highlight the progress of Japan's high rail project in India which started around the same time.
I am an Indian and let me tell u the issue is on India is completely different, the reason its delayed is becouse land acquisition has not been completed, there is people who refuse to sell their land and thus delaying the project.
@@muktadirbhuyan7281 Actually most of our delays are also because of land acquisition. That said, I sincerely hope Indian HSR project (and also your train modernization project) would go well. Here in ID, a lot of government opposition brought Japan to the discussion because of "if Japan build it it would be better/more on-time". This high-speed rail project, in the end, costs around 7 billion USD. Common construction materials are sourced from Indonesian craftsmanship and manufactured locally. The tracks are made by Panzhihua Steel, and in the future, Indonesia may be able to produce them domestically. Indonesia is also rich in mineral resources, and if it can produce steel rails, fasteners, electrical materials locally, it will undoubtedly greatly promote economic and employment growth. In fact, the Indonesian government places a strong emphasis on this sector. If they can expand the local supply chain scale and create a price advantage, there may even be a possibility of China repurchasing from Indonesia. This means that not only the future plans for Kalimantan Island but also railway infrastructure projects in Southeast Asia could see Indonesia becoming a major supplier. Malaysia and Vietnam have delayed their starts, missing opportunities, and now Indonesia is surpassing them. Even landlocked Laos is taking the lead in building railways ahead of Vietnam.
this is about money lol. Even on paper, the high speed train in vietnam is extremely expensive compare to our budget, and Laos train is not even considered high speed in modern standard.

The Transfer of Technology is only concerning girders and concretes, but not on HSR rolling stocks. Therefore, should Indonesia wish to build their own HSR, is still a loooong waayy
it's economy of scale, set up the production facility, the brain (computer control) of HSR that would make it prohibitive. it will always be 1 or 2 generation behind. look at India's home assembled aircraft carrier, it was designed by foreign firm, steel for deck had to acquire from foreign company, its electronics and radar, propulsion system from foreign countries, and aircrafts from France.

Infrastructure to every corner not making money for the politicians, just for the people to improve living. 12-7-2021 Tibet’s first bullet train line enters service For the first time, travelers in Tibet can enjoy the area’s mountainous views at high-speed. A 435-kilometer (250-mile) rail line connecting Tibetan capital Lhasa with the city of Nyingchi entered into service on June 25, giving all 31 provincial-level regions of mainland China access to high-speed train travel. 47 tunnels, 121 bridges Building a high-speed railroad in Tibet, dubbed the “roof of the world,” was no easy feat. Some 90% of the route, which took six years to construct, sits higher than 3,000 meters above sea level. The Lhasa-Nyingchi line features 47 tunnels and 121 bridges - which account for about 75% of the whole route. This includes the 525-meter-long Zangmu Railway Bridge, the largest and highest arch bridge of its kind in the world.
Infrastructure is always a contentious issue. In the 80s, the Malaysian PM went ahead with the north south highway. Almost every Malaysian swore against it as it was enriching a select few. And they already had a coastal road. Just a few years ago, the opposite requested toll charges to be waived as the tolls collected had covered over and beyond the construction cost plus. Everything comes down to whether users will deem time is money and use the faster route. There are many such cases of highways eventually becoming very well utilized in spite of a cost to using it. Likewise, the issue of HSR or for that matter, MRT.
Hsr has no big impact in countries like Malaysia. Malaysia already has quite fast train traveling at 120km/hr, highways are world class and AirAsia travel global hub is in KL. Moreover, population not that big in Malaysia compared to Indonesia. Waste of money and time. Going to to be a big white elephant.

For an infrastructure project of this scale, it has to be funded and supported by the state. Which private enterprise has the financial resources and political mandate to execute such behemoth projects? Even if such private enterprise exists, it is unwise to allow private ownership of such key infrastructural asset. The indonesian government must have conducted its own feasibility study and find the hsr project worthwhile in the long term. Indonesia has the largest economy / population in south-east Asia and most of the people and economic activities take place in the island of Java. The country's economy is growing rapidly and with that demand for public infrastructure will grow as heightened economic activities move ppl ard. Even if the hsr is losing money in the short term, u can't deny that it offers indonesian a great option to move between cities at a fraction of the time needed on other mode of transport. This is part of raising the standard of living for the people! Giving them options! Dunnoe why scmp has to frame this in a negative light by selectively using their choice words and interviewing their preferred so-called "expert" in order to paint this as a debt trap laid for Indonesia. This is beginning to feel like a mouth piece for the western hegemony.

They are saying this because japan made a proposal for the same route that had a lower interest rate and adressed the station location problem mentioned in the video, however the government needed to fund the project, the chinese proposal originally did not required state funding and was considered a bussiness to bussiness loan, which is why Jokowi promised not to use state funding, but unexpected costs forced him to. They are essentially saying that we made a bad choice with china and should have gone with japan
Why do so many people want infrastructure to be profitable? If it is profitable, it means that all passengers will pay a higher price. Infrastructure is used to drive rapid social development and achieve more profits, rather than relying on self creation of profits.
The traffic problem between the two cities cost Indonesia 8.9 billion dollars annually. The cost to build this high speed rail is 7.3 billion dollars. It's all we needed to know.

Even Indonesia's richer neighbour like Singapore & Malaysia still have no HSR to date, probably they wait another project from the US that called "Built Back Better World" , it was told there's no trap & no debt.
What's the controversy over pricing? Anyone with common sense wouldn't be comparing ticket prices between communal rail routes against highspeed rails, just as no one would compare pricing against coach lines and air tickets. Ordinary people, even folks in EU don't travel HSR on regular basis, its basically for business travelers and tourists. I do not believe there would be people by the masses who would commute 3 hours (6 hrs return trip) daily to and from work prior HSR was built?! Then why make it a problem now? Railway projects especially HSR are super-long term projects; has any Indonesians regretted building the railways during colonial period even though, it costed so much sweats and many lives in the process?

There are always voices of opposition, and there are also opponents in China. However, the Chinese government’s investment in high-speed rail does not entirely depend on the return on the investment itself, but that these railways can greatly improve the investment environment along the railway and enhance the economic development along the line. , can also improve the uneven economic development between regions, and make people's travel convenient, fast and comfortable. These economic and social benefits are difficult for opponents to understand, but this is what the government should consider and do. This is also the biggest difference between the Chinese government and other Western governments. Think about it, even the most remote rural areas have 4G networks. Which Western country other than China can do this?
Everything in China is failing. From the housing market, infrastructure, food safety, human rights, etc. China is a dump. The only place that's well built in China is the International Zone in Shanghai which was built by the British over 100 years ago.
Today, the Indonesian people can personally experience the convenience brought by the 350KM high-speed rail. 12-7-2022 Britain-based charity Debt Justice: 35% of African gov debt is owed to Western lenders compared to 12% owed to Chinese lenders The average interest rate on Western loans is 5%, compared to 2.7% Chinese lenders.
12-7-2022 Studies show private Western lenders create most of African debt burden In a report released last week, Britain-based charity Debt Justice found that African governments owe three times more debt to Western banks, asset managers, and oil traders than to China, and are charged double the interest. The report said 12 percent of African governments' external debt is owed to Chinese lenders compared to 35 percent owed to Western private lenders, adding that the average interest rate on private loans is 5 percent, compared to 2.7 percent on loans from Chinese public and private lenders. The new findings lay bare the absurdity of the so-called "debt-trap diplomacy" that has been for too long touted by Western politicians and propaganda machines in smear campaigns against China, experts have said.
03:00 nice opinion but as tourist may choose HSR for destination transport also about the price I think it's normal compared toll tax, instead driving 142km make you feel tired and sleepy the Indonesian HSR also make you safe from traffic accident, time, cost. Hope Indonesia can Build train in Borneo 🎉
The Chinese trains werent full on the first day they were launched. If they are that's not success, that means you are way behind the curve. Indonesia is a fast growing economy thats projected to become the 4th largest by 2050. If its citizens still cant afford HSR in the coming years, then the country wouldve failed elsewhere. As for costs and land acquisition challenges, it is down to Indonesia to fix that as it will greatly boost adoption & affordability. Otherwise it will fall more into the India trajectory of implementation than China's.
Going by the same reasoning, no modern airports should be built in Indonesia because they will be too expensive, and only a few people can afford the airfare.
Whether you are a fan or a naysayer in life nothing can change the fact that Indonesia is the first big country in south east asia to achieve and manage to build up this feat today. Congrats.

Even if high-speed rail was 2 hours longer than flying, I would still choose high-speed rail. Only if it is not feasible or the rail travel time is too long would I fly. Congratulations Indonesia.
Yeah hsr could be set schedule for anytime in between each day
Definitely prefer HSR even it takes 4 hours more than flight.

A breakthrough in Transportation
Infrastructure is always a contentious issue. In the 80s, the Malaysian PM went ahead with the north south highway. Almost every Malaysian swore against it as it was enriching a select few. And they already had a coastal road. Just a few years ago, the opposite requested toll charges to be waived as the tolls collected had covered over and beyond the construction cost plus. Everything comes down to whether users will deem time is money and use the faster route. There are many such cases of highways eventually becoming very well utilized in spite of a cost to using it. Its a bit optimistic to be honest, no one can master a technology in a few years, let alone 2-3 years... you need a lot more time, decades even, and a lot of money, to master a craft, its not easy, theres no childrens game my friend.
Actually if you travel alone it's better to use this high speed railway, using car from Jakarta to Bandung would actually cost the same; but the train would save you perhaps twice the time and definitely your energy.

Indonesia’s 600-capacity train was the first high-speed rail transportation in South-east Asia with the opening of the high-speed rail from Jakarta to Bandung.
With a top speed of 350kmh, the bullet train named Whoosh can get between the capital Jakarta and Bandung in 45 minutes. The 140km journey would previously have taken about three hours by train.
Congratulations Indonesia.
Congratulations to Indonesians! In the end the builders are the heroes. The neysayers can complain as much as they want, but they can’t bring true convenience and comfort to the people.
Thank you
Congratulations 👏👏👏
Me as Indonesian keep build until SURABAYA !!! We need thissss
I think this is a great feat for Indonesia, I mean it's only the beginning... great things we can expect from them!
Woa impressive. 3 years delays on this type of project? with Covid in the middle? Woa impressed.
Debt Trap he says? another video trying to minimize the impact of China and its help on other country. 16USD is indeed a little bit expensive, but do you know how much is the cost of train here in Canada, and with no bullet train?? Congratulation to Indonesia for the first Bullet train in south asia!!!! I now need to get there are test it.
Indonesians: Hello, we would like to take out a loan to build a high speed railway because we don't have the cash on hand.
Railway gets build.
Indonesians: 4:25 DEBT TRAP!!!!
Indonesia import HSR from China.
But Indonesia PT INKA also export 120km/hour train to Bangladesh, Filipina, New Zealand, etc.
Why do so many people want infrastructure to be profitable? If it is profitable, it means that all passengers will pay a higher price. Infrastructure is used to drive rapid social development and achieve more profits, rather than relying on self creation of profits.
Hype ? What hype ? It's truly beautiful, fantastico, elevating that Indonesia has this zipping thingy ... Luv it !!!
The traffic problem between the two cities cost Indonesia 8.9 billion dollars annually.
The cost to build this high speed rail is 7.3 billion dollars.
It's all we needed to know.

This looks cheap. The British are complaining the HS2 rail expected to cost $30billion will now cost over $100 billion. 🤷♂️
Even before Britain's run of double digit inflation from late 2022 to early 2023, the HS2 budget had ballooned.
Its 2015 cost of 55.7 billion pounds ($68 billion) reached 98 billion pounds by 2019, and a 2020 review showed that could rise to 106 billion pounds.
And by the time it complete, will cost 150B
What is wrong for Indonesia to have bullet train for the benefits of its people . Are you paid by US to belittle Indonesia or a US stooge?
Thank you for great content SCM. Regards from Indonesia
💵 Bought Military things (F15X) from US: Cash $22B
💵 Built Economy things (HSR) from China: Debt $7B
😅 Why?.. We, Indonesia knew the function of HSR (ROI) and Military things (non-ROI). Both are super power.
If this cooperation with China could make "debt trap" to Indonesia then how the cooperation with Japan, like India & Vietnam did, what kind of traps make their HSR still not yet arrive.
Even Indonesia's richer neighbour like Singapore & Malaysia still have no HSR to date, probably they wait another project from the US that called "Built Back Better World" , it was told there's no trap & no debt.
Japan train debt traps
As indonesian, am welcoming you guys (chinese investor) to invest more in this country
Oh pls, all people know is how to complain. If the gov doesn’t launch this train project, people say traffic is bad, air ticket is too expensive. This is just another option for people to choose. All major projects were delayed during the pandemic all around the world. Not just Indonesia. You expect the gov to abandon project instead of completing it? What is this Bhima guy talking about.

They should be grateful to the Indonesian government for wisely choosing China's high-speed rail instead of the Shinkansen a few years ago. Otherwise, Indonesia's high-speed rail dream will become as far away as India and Vietnam.

SCMP, please do a piece on India’s high speed train built by Japan. Ops, it’s not built yet. To be completed when, SCMP?
The high-speed rail in India is over 500 km long, while Indonesia's high-speed rail is only 142 km long. Additionally, India's high-speed rail uses track slabs, while Indonesia's high-speed rail uses ballasted tracks, which are cheaper and faster to implement.
If always worried about debt traps, please ask the United States to send more free money to underdeveloped countries. For them, money is just a piece of paper, not enough then print.😁
Yes. By printing, the US can afford anything and everything.
Dont settle for less. Must use and improve new technologies. Indonesia must move forward.
😅Meanwhile, Britain can no longer afford to build high-speed rail.
3-10-2023 UK government halts plans for Birmingham-Manchester high-speed rail。
HS2 was originally scheduled to connect London to Birmingham, and then expand the route northward to Crewe, Manchester and Leeds to improve transportation between major cities. However, due to project delays and rising costs, the project cost increased from 55.7 billion pounds in 2015 to 2019. It was 98 billion pounds in 2020, and a review in 2020 shows that it may rise to 110.6 billion pounds.
SCMP, why don't you give us more information on the Indian and Japanese HSR project which is only 10 km completed after 7 years, and its over-driven cost and problems. We are more interested in knowing about that than your biased criticism of the Indonesian HSR.
A gentle reminder to the people working in SCMP to get over the sourness of losing your White Exceptionalism Privileges in Hong Kong. Time is changing, and you will soon lose it in other parts of the world.

There is a commenter who has said something very pertinent : Building infrastructure can never be considered a debt trap. Buying weapons in the billions of USD is the real debt trap.
Trying to turn public transport into a profitable business is a non starter. Most governments in the world know that.

California has spent $10 billion on high speed rail so far, and what has it got? Nothing! It makes me envious to see Indonesia got its high speed rail. Congratulations to Indonesia. I hope the construction of the part that extends beyond Bandung will soon start.
You don't hype too much about projects undertaken by the Chinese, wait till you hear the horror about the cost of the HSR2 in the UK and the number of years and cost-cutting and even abandon certain parts of the route even though is already in the plan.
This Hongkong media always make a bad asumption about China 😊
Tokyo-- Osaka HSR runs every 3.5~5 minites .You can understand that frequency brings profit in HSR world.
India and Indonesia proposed High speed train corridor at the same time but Indonesia completed the corridor much more ahead than India. India should have choosed china instead of Japan for the construction of India's first high speed Train corridor.
LoL.... Indonesia's HSR is only 140 km and it took nearly 7 years to complete it .While Indian HSR is 550 km(including 21 km undersea tunnel) means more time required to acquire land and construct the HSR .(Construction only started in 2019 due to land acquisition problem). Moreover HSR in Indonesia has been constructed by chinese companies who already has experience of building 20,000 km of HSR , while in India all construction are being done by Indian companies. So it require time to get technology and expertise. (Lets see chinese cycle - Chinese banks giving loan for HSR , while chinese steel suppliers , construction companies , trainset suppliers , chinese workers(working on project) etc taking them back from Indonesia to chinese banks 🤣🤣And interest that chinese banks will get in future is bonus ).

7.1 billion dollar high speed rail project is a debt trap? For a massive project like this, keeping the cost only 1 billion over budget is already a great achievement itself considering factors like land acquisitions. geographic uncertainties, inflation, COVID, etc. A real debt trap is 368 billion AUKUS project. Australia is betting its future for these 8 subs, yet does not even have a train faster than 130kmph.
Indonesia chose economic development, while Australia quietly chose potential war.
12-7-2022 Britain-based charity Debt Justice:
35% of African gov debt is owed to Western lenders compared to 12% owed to Chinese lenders
The average interest rate on Western loans is 5%, compared to 2.7% Chinese lenders.
12-7-2022 Studies show private Western lenders create most of African debt burden
In a report released last week, Britain-based charity Debt Justice found that African governments owe three times more debt to Western banks, asset managers, and oil traders than to China, and are charged double the interest.

This idea of the opposition is really disgusting.
