    I am of the opinion that NO ONE is 100% all the time, throughout a professional career, in a consistent "measured" way that we "critics" all have the convenient position to then sit back, judge and go "boooo this shit sucks !!! "
    We were on the verge of losing them PERIOD when this album came out, James had gone into REHAB and blown his voice out .... Jason had left and Lars and Kirk were trying to keep the boat afloat wondering if they would ever play w James again let alone make another album !!! Do I like all the stuff on this album ...NOPE but I was grateful that they still made it and James was able to get back on the horse swinging still creating music. This album was very cathartic for them as a band and as individuals. They were searching for why they still played music at this point and it definitely shows !! Then you throw in Dr. Phil on top of all that shit and you get "ST. ANGER".... I for one am grateful they still exist and are making music
    Can't wait to see em in Sept - METAL UP YOUR ASS 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

    I saw the documentary it brought me to tears. They went through some serious shit... But if they had Just let it all go and split up in the early 2000s we would still be whining about they should have stuck together and made another album blah blah blah not everything can be the first three records believe me I know ..I'm a recovering Prince fan.. and yes that was definitely too much snare but it's been out for decades so...

    This was metallica trying to be nu- metal.
    I have to defend them only in the sense that they were trying to remain relevant. You can do that or become a has-been. It was a swing and a miss. They learned from it and went on to record death magnetic.
    I won't criticize someone for taking a risk because if you never take risks you won't get very far. What if they never took the risk with kill em all, lightning, puppets, or black album?
    This was intentionally mixed and produced to sound bad. I found a video on YT where some other band re-recorded the album and properly mixed it & discovered that the songs aren't really bad, its just the mix. This could have been a decent record if they weren't trying to be something they're not.

  • @cidmontenegro8225
    @cidmontenegro8225 Месяц назад

    The biggest problem imo is the mix. It is bad. It is strange, the vocals are so prominent, and part of the drums sound close and some sound far away. Musically, the guitar is kind generic, or uninspired. No solo? or even a lick or riff to break up some monotony? The 'push it out' is, jarring? It sounds out of place, like it didn't belong with the song. I do like the bass in the mix, but I don't think Rob played for the recording.

      I understand your sentiment, but hear me out. Sometimes, a bad song can be somebody's gateway drug. They hear power chords and chuggin', and it makes them wanna hear more of that, and it leads them down the rabbit hole of everything that metal can be. For some older folks, a song like Enter Sandman can be the end, but for younger listeners, it can be the beginning. It's all a matter of perspective. \m/

Better efforts recently, yet lost the passion, heart & integrity... Still hope they can get it back. Not saying i expect a Fight Fire- as they are not the same hungry kids. Guess I'm going to be the only one here to defend St. Anger, this album deserves some of the criticism it gets but it's massively overblown. This album was one big giant therapy session, exorcising the demons that almost broke the band up.
    It's about releasing all of that pain, anger, and despair. That's why I find this album therapeutic to listen to when I'm going through some shit, there's a lot of other fans who share the same sentiment. .
    A lot of fans don't want to admit that they like it, but the crowd goes crazy whenever they play a St. Anger song live (of course without the trashcan snare and guitar solos added in).

    The gimmick of the album is that it was supposed to be spontaneous and raw, like a return to the mindset of their early days. Yet they were arguing over every drumbeat and riff and they had personal therapists in the studio to deal with their interpersonal problems lol. So there was absolutely nothing spontaneous about it. The fact they were aping "post-grunge" elements also showed Metallica were no longer the trendsetters by any means.
