The songs from Load and Re-Load were written at the same time. It wasn't them getting back to heavy. They're about the same heaviness.

All the songs on Load and Reload where basically written at the same time. They had planned to release a double album originally but the story goes all of the songs were not completely finished so rather than delay the release they decided to split the songs and do two separate albums. Reload was a little heavier but two of the best songs written during that time...in my opinion were on Load. (Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me)

Load and Reload are extremely underrated.
This song is so good live, especially at outdoor stadium shows! They start with a very slow, melodic acoustic guitar intro and than James suddenly screams "Gimme Fuel, Gimme a fire..." and a bunch of pyrotechnics go off from the stage.

Has anyone checked out the video Metallica recently released on their channel where they cover an Elton John song? The song is, Love Lies Bleeding In My Hand / Funeral For A Friend. Elton and the writer, Bernie Taulpin??? were receiving an award from the Library Of Congress for that song. I will butcher the name of the award without looking it up. Black tie affair - let's put it that way. The boys were pretty well dressed, in a rock and roll style of course. 'Cept Lars - he had on a t-shirt but who cares, it's rock and roll. It was amazing to see those guys perform such a legendary song with their twist on it. Elton and Bernie were front and center and the camera kept going back and forth to them and the band.
It probably helps to know the original to really appreciate how well they treated it - especially when James used his guitar to play a part that is played by a PIANO in the original. James is a fucking bad ass! They all are. They really looked amazing for their age and imo sound better than ever. It was just recorded in March this year. Check it out if you haven't!!
Yes...Metallica released it on their official RUclips page a few days after show. It may be one of the best covers I have ever heard them do.

There was also 1971 Dodge Challenger, when I workout at gym I listen to this song to give me extra energy.

James is HUGE GEARHEAD.... There are several Camaros, a Chevy II, a Challenger, and several other Detroit muscle cars making appearances throughout the video.

From what I gather... the 'Load' and 'Reload' albums in 1996 and '97 respectively, were an attempt to experiment and try to incorporate Metallica into the 90's rock scene. Half the band was not happy w/ the dramatic changes but Lars (drums) and Kirk (lead guitar) wanted to go in that direction - more into their 70's rock influences like U.F.O. ... Lynyrd Skynyrd ... Thin Lizzy ... Deep Purple... etc.
Coming off 3+ years of touring between 1991 and 1994 for Metallica's 'black' album, the band was exhausted and took a break to enjoy their massive wealth 😂 James Hetfield spent his money on wheels and hot rods... his time racing or hunting... Jason Newsted (bass) built his own recording studio and started jamming w/ other musicians to make side projects; apparently when the Metallica org found out, they laid down the law - no putting out any solo projects while in Metallica.
Kirk Hammett was an avid surfer... while Lars Ulrich was into collecting art. Metallica signed a new record contract w/ their label Elektra Records after a legal battle and were apparently paid Million$ as a result.
After a year break, 1995 was the year of alternative rock and Metallica's 80's thrash sound was a liability in the 90's... Jason Newsted heard bands like Pantera and Machine Head and wanted Metallica to go in that direction... However, Newsted had little standing in Metallica and Lars and Kirk wanted an 'organic' Metallica album that could play anything they wanted. Lars was heavily into UK rockers Oasis... James was into Alice In Chains... The new Metallica songs would go in that direction instead as the band began writing and recording in the studio for a year... As usual, Jason Newsted had little creative input and only 1 songwriting credit - That dynamic was what likely led to him leaving Metallica by 2001... He was unable to contribute to Metallica and he was forbidden to put out any of his solo music.
James claimed that the sessions were much calmer in the sense that he and Lars let Kirk and Jason play the new songs the way they felt ...and not w/ them standing behind them and knit picking what notes they could (or couldn't) play on the tracks.
The plan was for Metallica to do what Guns N' Roses did in 1991 - 2 CD's released simultaneously... a lot of new Metallica music to offer. However, 1996 came around and only half the songs had been completed in the studio... Metallica had booked tour dates that summer headlining the alternative rock festival tour Lollapalooza '96, so only 1 CD was scheduled for release - the first album 'Load'.
The first single was 'Until it sleeps'... and early indications hinted that 'Load' would reach #1 on the charts and sell millions of copies worldwide... However, Metallica was no longer that band in 1991... They appeared w/ short hair... The familiar Metallica logo was replaced by a generic one... The band members posed for an array of fashion photos for the booklet on 'Load' and wore Cuban pimp suits on the back cover... The album cover was a photo of semen & blood... It was beyond ridiculous.
The music was not aggressive and had no familiarity w/ their thrash metal roots, even incorporating country and southern rock...
'Load' was just not a heavy metal record... The backlash was immediate - hardcore Metallica fans called them 'sellouts' in the 90's grunge era and called the 'Alternica'... 'Load' sold well, 5 million copies in the US to date... but was not the juggernaut that was the 'black' album. Lars claimed that he didn't expect it to be...
After a 1997 headline tour, Metallica rushed back into the studio to complete the remaining songs and in late '97, they announced the next album 'Reload' would be released... The first single 'The memory remains' featured British singer Marianne Faithful... but the response was mixed - the song was slower and not as memorable. 'Reload' charted at #1 as well but sold 3 million copies in the US, indicating the displeasure that a significant contingent of Metallica fans felt about the band's new non-metal music... 'Fuel' was more energetic and memorable... while the sequel song 'The Unforgiven II' went into country music again... Metallica was back on tour in 1998.
Jason Newsted did admit early on that Metallica's drastic changes to their image and sound hurt their popularity somewhat... He related to fans who adored the band w/ long hair and a heavy sound and attitude in 1991... "That's MY Metallica..."
But 5 years later, there's a record w/ semen on the cover... 4 guys on the CD wearing Cuban pimps suits and no hair... "Who is this? It says 'Metallica'... but I don't recognize these guys..."

Load and reload are masterpieces just like every other Metallica album, what’s amazing about Metallica is the variation they have , thrash, heavy metal, groove, rock n roll etc and load , reload have some of their best work especially, the outlaw torn, memory remains , attitude .. hell all the songs lol

I feel James has always had a country twang to his voice. I guess as he got older when he sang clean it sounded country but it seemed natural to me. Mama Said for eg is an awesome song.
If you guys ever get a chance, please do a review of a song off their Garage inc album called Tuesday's gone, its a cover of the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd song and theyve got the frontman from Blues Traveler on there as well... theyre one of the few bands that can do a cover and do justice to the original.. and the two cars in that video was a 69 Camaro and if I had to guess a Chevelle or a 72 Nova

I'm also chronically late, mostly from watching RUclips videos like this ad nauseum when I should be moving along with my day.
Im in the small portion of MEtallica fans that absolutely LOVE this two albums. Yes, its not trash, yes, its not metal, its old school hard rock and both album are great at that. I remebered I hated these albums at the moment, had the same reaction to them as most of Metallica fans, but learned to appreciate this records with time. Bleeding me is just so F#%$&ing good
Now Metallica needs the third installment in these recordings called: OVERLOAD.

Actually, James Hetfield is a big car guy.... it's just about cars and racing.
It was suposed to be a double album at the time, but at one point the record company said they had to release an album, so they released the songs that where done. That is Load. Then, like one year latter they released Reload. The songs where writen at the same time.
Btw, from Load there are a bunch of songs that you would love.

The reason reload came later was due to them doing the gig at Lola lapooza and it spelled the second half of the album

I used to be that diehard about Metallica when this came out, I hated Load and Re-loaded. Now I just think of it as their jam albums, they just wanted to experiment. After relistening to them I actually like this and a few other songs.

Reminds me of the old Yellow River Dragway right off I-20 in Covington {a trailer park now that I once lived in during the 80s} which unfortunately was the scene of a bad disaster & closed after a horrific crash in 1969 that killed 12 people when a funny car flew into the crowd ✌💖☮

The truth is that both Load and Reload was the end of the world for the hard core Metallica fans. They were called sell outs and that they were making wimpy rock. The first song that played on the radio from Load was a song called 2x4 from a live show they were doing in Europe and people were not happy. Maybe that's the next one you guys should check out. They picked up a lot of new fans with these albums too. A lot of those people didn't care for the early albums except the black album. It took many years and a album with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and a reinterpretation of those songs to bring a good deal of old school fans around. You'll still have fans that won't listen to anything but the first three, maybe four, albums. They miss out because Load and Reload are great albums with great music. It's not trash and sometimes it's not even heavy but it's very cool. I would say for myself it's the first three albums and Load and Reload that I will go back and listen to the most. If you really want to hear what this project was about check out the songs The House Jack Built, Hero Of The Day and especially Poor Twisted Me. That last one you won't believe it's Metallica. You'll think James is with some other band. All these songs are from Load. Just to show you there is no difference in style between these albums you can also listen to The Memory Remains, Carpe Diem Baby and Where The Wild Things Are. They experimented on Reload just as much as on Load.

It's funny and frustrating to be a Metallica fan at times. While most fans hate certain parts of Metallica's history. Very few have stayed the course and enjoy every single album. (I'm one of the few). Metallica have always been ahead of the times. As you can see and read, a lot of those fans that hated Load and Reload when they came out. Are just now realizing how good they actually are. They forget, Metallica will ALWAYS "go against the grain until the end."

Metallica's first four albums are God Tier but Load and ReLoad are underrated as fuck in my opinion! The Black Album felt pretty forced but the Load/Reload albums felt like a natural progression from Metallica's Thrash sound if that makes a lick of sense? 😂
Either way 'Fuel' is one of my favourite Metallica tunes. Any combination of Motorsport and Heavy Metal gets a thumbs up from me! 👍
