This reminds me so much of my mom, they were her favorite! I miss her so much, I was just diagnosed with cancer and I really need her. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. ❤
@@WoodenFilms why would it be exactly the same length? it's a different video, and a lot changes in 5 years, so there could be more information in this one, a more relaxed vibe, more inserts and B roll, there could be hundreds of little differences. Not sure why you would expect it to be exactly the same.
In the Philippines, we have polvoron which is an easy to do shortcake, all you need is powdered milk and some sugar, for flavors we use bibingka, ube, coffee and chocolate! 😊
My ex husband..my children’s dad..married a woman from the Philippines and she makes those all the time. They are delicious! Her flan is the best I’ve ever tasted!
*i find it's the ratio of sugar to flour to butter that makes the cookie.* this ratio defines how your cookies will turn out if you really want it to melt in your mouth, mix some rice flour in with the ap flour
The whole biscuit/cake /bread tax thing still exists, this is why we have jaffa 'cakes' that are essentially soft biscuits. Cakes aren't taxed but chocolate civered biscuits are... So we get jaffa cakes. Also ginger bread is not taxed if they are person shaped and have chocolate eyes, but if they have clothes then they are.
Thank you kind Sir- For this recipe and informing us of your RUclips shorts... And we wouldn't mind 'short' stories /histories of food..like you did today! Always learn something from you❤
Thank you for this recipe, this came at the perfect time! I love shortbread cookies w my morning coffee but the walkers brand is so expensive. Now I can make them myself!
Chilling to slice cookies instead of rolling into a sheet is genius, super convenient, and also works with gluten free flour! I baked this twice from your older video!
I intend to try these. Your channel is one of the very few I can stand to watch. You’re so sweet, charming, goofy, and down to earth. You act like an actual human! I do that on my channel too. I don’t even edit out mistakes.
Shortbread is my favourite along with chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. We always made logs in wax paper making little discs and topped each one with a small piece of candied cherry, maybe 1/8 of a cherry. I think the only difference is we didn't use any vanilla. Then you can taste the rich butter.
Folks always put so much in shortbreads... I have an old scotch recipe that's been passed down many many generations only 3 ingredients butter brown sugar and flour. 1 cup butter 1/2 cup brown sugar ( packed) 2 cups flour ( sifted) Cream room temp butter with sugar till well combined Add your flour bit by bit once combined add more till all flour is used Roll out dough onto a lightly floured surface pat down dough to 1/4 inch thick roll lightly to smooth the top cut into desired shapes prick halfway through centers with a fork. Add cookies to a nonstick cookie tray or line with parchment cook at 350 for about 15 minutes. Happy holiday baking!❤
I can't wait to make these! I've made many of your recipes and every single one was incredible!! Thank you for sharing amazing recipes and fun facts too!
Thanks for the new recipe I already tried out the sugar cookies LOL my mom said I didn't add enough sugar😂😂😂 so then I took your icing recipe from when you did the pumpkin cookies, I was curious about whether or not it would be really good if I added Orange and orange zest to the frosting it ended up tasting like an orange cream soda I am so tweaking my cookies from now on😊👍 LOL I wonder if the shortbread cookies would be good with the orange icing I did😋 PS thanks✨ Mr John✨ for all the great recipes you put out there
Thank you so much for bringing delicious recopies. Have tried many of them and turned out really good. Finally got myself a kitchen scale and a Candy thermometer. Your instructions are so easy and entertaining, absolutely love it. Loads of love to your entire family from Toronto !!!
Today, a mixer arrived and I recently got a kitchen scale! Have all the ingredients so in liue of bread may make this recipe first ! Love a good SB cookie! Thanks!
Thank You for all your recipes! You are amazing! I cooked and baked many of them and they all came out perfect. Last time I did the stuffed shells and it was a real hit 🎉❤I really like your videos, recipes and trying not to miss any of them. Many of them in my cooking book for my kids and family. Thank You so much John! Have a wonderful Christmas and all the best for you and your family ❤❤❤❤👍🇨🇦🙋♀️
Shortbreads are my fav. Mom’s used the brown sugar recipe. My best friend’s one was like yours Scotch shortbread and the other the whipped piped shortbread. There is no such thing as bad shortbread.
Hi John, I notice you use a standard paddle for your mixer. I am sure you are aware of the paddles which have a scraper going down the edge side of the paddle. Is there a specific reason why you do not use one? Just curious!
Shortbread is my favorite cookie and dessert ever. Once again you have made it very approachable and I'm going to be making this ASAP. As per usual. As I can go down the list five years or so doesn't matter what it is you bake my pumpkin bread every year, Banana bread, cakes, cookies, whatever it is... Just waiting for you to have your own Food Network program ... ❤
John, I have tried to make apple bars with fresh apple slices and a shortbread base. With the recipe I have the base is too dry to come together. I wonder if you could come up with one that works please ❤️🙏
Hmmm…. Yummy! 😋 One of my personal favourites. 🥰 But I’ve never actually baked them myself. 😆 But I’ve always wanted to know why there are little holes on the shortbread biscuits. 🤣
Great recipe, I will try it! I still can't understand why not every household has kitchen scale. How can you measure butter accurately with spoons or prevent errors in the amount of flour? Greetings from Munich, Germany!
John, when you poke the cookies before baking, do you go all the way through the dough? In other words, would you be able to see the holes from the bottom? Thanks.
Hi John! I wonder if you remember Mother's small square chocolate chip cookies? The cookie was pretty white, not yellow, and the chocolate chips were mini. If you do remember them, do you think they were shortbread? I don't usually like store-bought cookies, but those were ones I always loved. I'll give this recipe a try. Happy Holidays from Carson City NV 🎄🎄
Greetings from Canada🍁 Hello again John. I can actually smell these cookies through my computer screen. SHAME! The shame on you! I now have to wait for Christmas to have my mothers Shortbread. Could make it myself but… Naaaaah! This is an indulgence that I exploit just once a year. I cannot wait!👍
I make shortbread every Christmas for presents. I think I'll try this recipe this year as it's a little different from mine. I always use the silicone beater attachment with my machine, but I've never noticed you using one. Is there a reason why the metal beater is better than the silicone one? Does it give better results, or is it just your preference?
Hi there! I came across your comment and it made me wonder if I should invest in a silicone beater attachment! My KitchenAid mixer didn't come with a silicone one. I just have the "Coated Flat Beater". Upon research, if it's the "Flex Edge Beater", it says it's an attachment that "scrapes the sides of the bowl so you don’t have to stop your mixing to scrape by hand". I'm guessing he didn't use it because most people don't have that attachment or he doesn't mind scraping the sides of the bowl by hand!
@MelissaSimply It does scrape the sides, but some ingredients still gather against just above the beater. Therefore, you still have to stop and push it down occasionally, but the sides and bottom seem to mix well. I assumed all stand mixers would come with that attachment, but if it's available, I'd recommend it.
I’m sorry to correct you, but they are better with some of the flour substituted with brown rice flour. Maybe a fourth of it, or a third of it. I got that from a recipe from a Scottish lady. It makes it delicious, and short!
This reminds me so much of my mom, they were her favorite! I miss her so much, I was just diagnosed with cancer and I really need her. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. ❤

God bless you. Your mom is always with you 💛
How weird, I was just thinking about making shortbread today. It’s a sign. Thank you for all of your WONDERFUL recipes!
I am unsure how this video is 3 minutes longer than the exact same video he made 5 years ago.

My favorite mix in is lemon zest
Oh, yahhh!!❤ Then drizzle chocolate over them. Lemon & chocolate is a fantastic combination.

Agreed. Learned this method from Michael Ruhlman, who found the recipe in an Irish church cookbook.
Mmmmmm! Brown butter! Never thought of that for shortbread! Hey thanks!!!
My favorite are holiday shaped shortbread cookies with colored sugar sprinkles 😋❤
Same! They bring back childhood memories.

I haven't had short bread cookies in a while. I used to add like orange or lemon in mine and have with tea. I will make this thank you.
I love shortbread cookies, because of my mother. Thanks Mom ❤️
Thank you for this recipe, this came at the perfect time! I love shortbread cookies w my morning coffee but the walkers brand is so expensive. Now I can make them myself!
Homemade is always tastier anyways! You'll love them.
No way... I was *just* looking for an eggless shortbread cookie. John to the rescue! My niece and nephew will love these :)
I love shortbread cookies! They were my favourite when I was growing up. I add brown sugar to mine in addition to powdered sugar.
Sensational friend wow very thankfull bless to your family really appreciated 👏
My favorite cookie of all time!
Thank you so much for bringing back the nostalgia

I always add some semolina to the mixture which gives them a nice texture
Congratulations on 5m, John!
A nice and elegant addition I’ve done before is a teabag or two's worth of Earl Grey tea leaves, chopped a bit finer.
Yes! Adding Earl Grey is so good. I once added a favorite orange type of tea, that was really good, too!
@ Constant Comment?
Ohhh...that sounds marvelous. Never would have thought of that. An elegant upgrade.
Enjoy watching your videos❤.
That soft crunch when you bit into one, yummo!! 😋😋😋
Adding chopped toasted pecans would essentially make these into homemade Pecan Sandies. Sounds good to me!
Yes! Or mini chocolate chips...❤😂
Thank you. ❤

I haven't made these for years

Shortbread is my all-time favorite but I haven't found a good recipe yet... until now!!! I trust JK with all my recipe needs ❤
Hi John! If I were to add a spice to this recipe how much would I add? Like cinnamon? Thank you! 😊
If you were to do browned butter, would you use the butter while it's melted or should you cool it till it's firmed up some?
John, when you poke the cookies before baking, do you go all the way through the dough? In other words, would you be able to see the holes from the bottom? Thanks.

@PreppyKitchen For the brown butter, I just stir it in melted?

Could i use almond flower ?
I was given a shortbread mold last year-a pie shape enabling me to cut it into pie like slices. Will this recipe work for that?
What kind of icing i can use for these cookies?
I have a shortbread pan with embossed squares, can I use this recipe in a shortbread pan?
How can u make it savory as appetizer with wine during Christmas parties?
I’m sorry to correct you, but they are better with some of the flour substituted with brown rice flour. Maybe a fourth of it, or a third of it. I got that from a recipe from a Scottish lady. It makes it delicious, and short!
cool
Yum
I would have a hard time not eating the dough. Butter cookies are my favorite.
WHOA! WOAH!
I miss shortbread 😭😭😭😭😭
