Hi Brian. Am a baker from India. Thank you for this foolproof recipe. I tried it and it came out awesome. I added some orange rind for an Orange shortbread version and the flavour was awesome. I have seen so many shortbread recipes and also tried some when I visited Scotland, but the fact that you did not add any liquid in the dough and let the stand mixer do its job was infact unique. Thank you for sharing your recipe and tips with the world 😀

That’s one of my favourite videos, not for the cookies because honestly shortbread is amazing. But because you hand delivered it to your grands. That’s what the holidays are all about.
My Ma's parents had a bakery in Depew, New York when I was growing up... Colonial Bakery on Broadway at Transit. One of my strongest holiday memories was asking my Grandpa if I could go in to the store front and get a Christmas Anise cookie. He always said yes, because he knew how much I loved them.. and I know how much he loved me. Watching this made my night. Thank you Brian for helping me remember a Christmas Time from my past. Grandparents and cookies. It lifted me out of a dark place. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

My American grandmother baked shortbread every Christmas for my English grandfather and mother-in-law (my great-gran). By the time we grandkids came along, great-gran was gone but we still had the shortbread every Christmas. The greatest cookie ever.

Yeah same with my Nana from Scotland. She taught me how to make it the kneading way and to knead in all my love for the people I was making it for! My first cooking lesson. We also cook it closer to an hour and then sprinkle sugar on the top while it’s cooling.
You have it ! That is indeed the best recipe for Scottish shortbread and is better than any other. I used to make and sell this in my small bakery/cafe. Customers drove from quite a distance to buy this and said that it was heavenly.

I read a book when I was in 9th grade (US) and one of the main characters was Scottish. She had "Shortbread Day" and would sit in a chair with her mixture and work it almost all day...feeling the butter work through the dry ingredients with her hands. I remember thinking "bah! I loved this video. It made me think of making Welsh Cookies every Christmas. It is a family recipe. I made them with my mother on Christmas day. She took a bite of the first one after they cooled and said, "Now it is officially Christmas."

Shortbread, is my most favorite 💓 cookie. Loved this very sweet vid, and honor to your adorable grandma. I could be your grannie. Lol my own Hungarian grandma, taught me to bake at 7 yr. I'm now 76. And passing the cookies recipes down to my daughter & granddaughter & son. They come, each December to bake dozens of Hungarian kiffle and others, for the family at Christmas 🎄 A wonderful memory & knowledge to pass on.🥰
We never use a mixer in Ireland. You just have the butter at room temperature and cut it into chunks, rubbing it into the flour until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Then you stir in the sugar, then add a spoonful of water or milk to bring the dough together. Just press into a lightly greased baking tin and score the portions. Let it cool completely in the tin and dredge with caster (fine) sugar. We do not use rice flour, but sometimes use semolina.
I made shortbread once and found that the secret to the flavor like you get from Walkers is the butter you use. Homemade is always better but if you use Kerrygold butter the taste is spot on.
Fuckin' shoutout to old people by the way. They were out there doing stuff before we even existed, and they're smarter than we'll ever know until we're old and it's too late. God bless old people for sharing their knowledge with us when we're bothering to listen. Thanks old people.

Thank your Grandma for me for sharing the recipe with you and thank you for sharing the recipe with all of us. Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year. Looking forward to next years content and recipes.
Outside of the Scottish community, it really isn't well known due to its limited availability. It's also such an incredibly rich butter cookie, and with everybody these days either vegan, keto, paleo, gluten intolerant or on some other restricted eating plan, people pass it up out of necessity.
@@msr1116 I don’t know about ‘out of necessity’ but I get what you mean otherwise. Food trends have a way of turning right back around to the place people began. Take for instance gluten. The vast majority of humanity is NOT gluten intolerant. Butter has both good and bad points on fat, same with Keto. And Vegans, the philosophy is good, but the execution is not the best. Unless you have a food allergy, eat what you like. As for shortbreads ‘limited availability’, this Chicago born, Texas raised American grew up eating it on holidays and on occasion with tea.
Sitting here at home, foul with a cough that thankfully isn't Covid. Missed my xmas night thing with my fam-in-law. Missed my xmas day thing with my fam. So yeah, I was in a sour and rotten mood. Til I saw this vid. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face, and Happy Holidays.
I just love when you RUclips chefs share family recipes. It’s so inspiring and this Scottish Grandma shortbread recipe makes your channel even more beloved and unique. Happy holidays Bri! TALL Bri, gefilte fish! 😯
So pleased you look after your grandma and preserve her recipes. My grandma 😊made an almond biscuit with half-skinned almonds pressed on top. They are soft but not too crumbly with a lovely almond taste. The best. Don't think I have a recipe so treasure these gifts from generations past
I will definitely be making this. Fortunately, my kitchenaid mixer has a special paddle(that I bought separately), so it will probably take less time to come to that dough sort of consistency. Great video and great origins. I love that you are putting your grandmother in this. It's so sweet.
Love these heirloom recipes and the way they honour those that came before us. Friday morning I'll be making our family's traditional Tourtière du Lac St-Jean, and the best part is that there are as many versions of this as there are families in Quebec! Awesome that your grandfolks are here to to tell you, like only they can, that they're "too soft" (awww... 😊) so that your Gram's recipe can live on RIGHT. lol. Love love love this vid!
Cheers to this wonderful recipe. Scottish Shortbread happens to be my favorite of all cookies anywhere in the world. I will definitely try to make it. You made it look so easy. Thank you for sharing your Scottish grandma’s recipe. Much appreciated!
I remember the first time i ever ate shortbread in 1975 (10 years old) at my friends house. I've been making it ever since. My brother stands over the shortbread at Christmas and eats one after another. Yours is a simple yet great recipe - i can tell. And your step by step technique is great. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing! Minutes into this I was already pulling the mixer and flour out of the pantry. 🤙 Happy Holidays and thank you for sharing this family recipe with us!
I use a recipe without the rice flour. I shall try your recipe with the rice flour. It makes sense. God will bless you for being so thoughtful of your grandparents. You honor your granny by using her recipe. My grandchildren give me such joy, as I'm sure you give yours. Merry Christmas.

I love it and I love seeing your Grandparents! but I have to say that my mother-in law makes very good short bread and their Scottish too, Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Loved you going to see your wee granny ;) I'm Scottish and we use 3 ingredients, plain flour, icing sugar and butter, roll into a log in cling film then place in fridge (easier to cut into individual rounds). Nice variations are lavender heads in mix or roll edges of cut rounds in brown sugar b4 baking (Highland shorties) Once very slightly brown remove, cool then sprinkle with caster sugar. So many ways to make this, at Christmas use tree cutters
I had to wait almost 8 minutes in for my “ What’s up ?! “ I was ready to write a strongly worded letter. I’m so surprised by the rice flour! Can’t wait to try this so I can add it to my Christmas cookie boxes for next year. Your granny is adorable!

Never change kid. Thoughts and acts like these, make for a wonderful addition😂 to their lives.
Thanks for watching Bill.
Very cool Brian, glad you were able to go see your grandparents. They seemed delighted to see you.
They are the best! We had a good time together
It's perfection! I don't have a Scottish Grandma but undoubtedly they know shortbread!! 💝💝🙏🙏💝💝
Man thanks for sharing that. Sorry you had a rough holiday. Glad This vid brought a bit of light for you.
I just love everything about this Brian. I watch it every time I’m feeling nostalgic. Your grands are charming.
As a Scottish viewer, it’s great to see some surprising Scottish content! Great looking shortbread 👍🏴
MacDowell here, Merry Christmas 2022....
@@ozarkhillbilly5010 you too!
What a wonderful grandson!!!! God Bless you!
I just love when you RUclips chefs share family recipes. It’s so inspiring and this Scottish Grandma shortbread recipe makes your channel even more beloved and unique. Happy holidays Bri! TALL Bri, gefilte fish! 😯
Thank you Brian for sharing your sweet grandmother’s shortbread recipe! You’re a good grandson and I know they loved seeing you! ❤️
You're the guy that got me baking bread (loaf in oven as I type!) Merry Christmas to you and your grandparents!
Thanks you too!
@@BrianLagerstrom same, first bread i ever baked was from the 1 dough 3 loafs video, did the 2nd version in a dutchy. turned out great
Happy New Year to you Brian and, more importantly, your Scottish granny...from Glasgow, Scotland!!!🏴
Love the video @brianlagerstrom! I roll my shortbread with powdered sugar instead of flour! Works like a charm!
Wow good job. That sounds dope
Yep, Scottish shortbread is the best! I’m an Aussie and will definitely try your grandma’s recipe.
I hope you do!
Thanks for watching
Thanks!
I love shortbread, can't wait to try it. Your grandparent are so cute.
Thanks I love them a lot
So pleased you look after your grandma and preserve her recipes. My grandma 😊made an almond biscuit with half-skinned almonds pressed on top. They are soft but not too crumbly with a lovely almond taste. The best. Don't think I have a recipe so treasure these gifts from generations past
I will definitely be making this. Fortunately, my kitchenaid mixer has a special paddle(that I bought separately), so it will probably take less time to come to that dough sort of consistency. Great video and great origins. I love that you are putting your grandmother in this. It's so sweet.
Your grandparents are adorable. I love this.
Great pride in your cooking and appreciate the personal/sentimental touch Bri!! Happy Holidays!
Thanks very much
Happy holidays
was awesome, I love your loving your grandparents and I remembered how much I miss mine
Glad you enjoyed. I feel very lucky to have them
the chocolate chip shortbread has changed my life!! sooooo good
Thanks for trying the recipe!
Omg. How sweet. And she tells you what she actually thinks! That’s invaluable
Lovely 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻 Looks delicious 😋
That was absolutely stunningly sweet when u greeted her…my heart ❤️ melted.
Thanks for watching! Have a good New Year and a happy holiday
Cheers to this wonderful recipe. Scottish Shortbread happens to be my favorite of all cookies anywhere in the world. I will definitely try to make it. You made it look so easy. Thank you for sharing your Scottish grandma’s recipe. Much appreciated!
That was the sweetest video yet! More of Grandma’s Scottish recipes please! Does she do crumpets?
Scones also.
Thanks very much for watching! Happy Holidays
Yum! And fantastic you got to see your grandma.
I use a recipe without the rice flour. I shall try your recipe with the rice flour. It makes sense. God will bless you for being so thoughtful of your grandparents. You honor your granny by using her recipe. My grandchildren give me such joy, as I'm sure you give yours. Merry Christmas.
Did you try it? How did it taste! Did it have rice flavor?
@@spicywinter I did try it. No rice flavor. These go well with a cup of black coffee or a cup of Rooibos. (Sorry for the delayed response. I watched the video again 'cause I lost the recipe and will make these for my valentine.
Oh my goodness! Watching you meticulously shaping and cutting the shortbread, made me roll with laughter! I'm so glad to see my 22yr old son isn't the only male perfectionist in the world. Why are you youngsters so set on everything being so painfully neat? Lol. Loved Watching this! Granny and grandpa are adorable.
Sending love and good wishes to you and yours
From South Africa 🇿🇦
Honestly I know it’s silly! I filmed it most rusticly but it wasn’t very fun to watch.
@@BrianLagerstrom I absolutely loved it! You need to give yourself a lot more credit. It was filled with humor, a great recipe and love. It was an absolute joy to watch you. Don't ever sell yourself short. You have a wonderful "tv" presence and a bright future ahead. Keep up the awesome work and well done!
I love it and I love seeing your Grandparents! but I have to say that my mother-in law makes very good short bread and their Scottish too, Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Merry Xmas thanks for watching!
I was ready to write a strongly worded letter.
I’m so surprised by the rice flour! Can’t wait to try this so I can add it to my Christmas cookie boxes for next year. Your granny is adorable!
It’s often used in shortbread in Scotland
Awwww..you are the Sweetest Man,, how great you treat your Sweet Grandparents and your Wife. You are so Blessed to have them. Can't wait to try this recipe. I Love shortbread
Yesss I love the choc chip cookie version of these!! They sell em in loads of supermarkets in the UK in a large square shape and they're my guilty pleasure 🤤
That's the great joy of cooking and baking; sharing with loved ones. Good on ya for making the trip to share some love with your grandparents.
Thanks for watching. Merry xmas
I would love to try this recipe using almond flour. I think my Scottish grandmother would approve 😊
I doubt she would. Too many nutrients in almond flour
Brian! You read my mind. I got a fridge full of nice butter and I woke-up thinking I'd like to make something simple, but wonderfully special for my neighbor who plows my driveway. Thanks so much!
