The day I retired I started getting rid of 5 things every week. As time went by, it became less painful & I began to enjoy it. My daughter comes for coffee once a week & goes thru the box, What she doesn't take, goes to the thrift shop or the garbage. Always remember, when you die, you can't take it with you. Lol.

And your children have the hard work getting rid of all the stuff, nobody wants, had this with my parents it’s a wonder there roof if there bungalow didn’t fall in on top of them there was so much in the loft. We recently down sized to an apartment and got rid of everything that doesn’t earn a place, we have no longer got a loft, we have no garage, no shed, it’s all gone, if we don’t get rid of it our kids have to spend hours doing it for us, and they’ve got there life to live, not spends weeks getting things sorted.

Some people naturally attach memories to objects. I'm one of them. When I go through my stuff, I am amazed at the memories that come flooding back, and I am quite scared of losing them forever if I forget things. But some folks recommend taking photos of objects and that way, the photos can bring back those memories.

I am in the midst of downsizing right now, and it is BRUTAL!!! My Daughter was here the other day and asked me WHY I wasn't finished yet. I've wiped out out all the unnecessary stuff pretty much and now it's down to sorting through LOTS of her baby things, and setting up storage totes for my RV life. I just may have to go through my RV items one more time lol.

Currently on our Season 2 of RV America, and we have had to do the downsize shuffle so many times! it's one of my favorite activities to do. I usually get in a mood if we've been stationary for more than a week. When youre at a spot for a few weeks you really want to unpack it all and thats when i get the itch to sell stuff. I choose to sell things usually to offset camera and other tech purchases for the channel. always trying to put it back in the slush. great tips, great video, as usual.

One thing that has helped me is asking myself, "Am I being a good steward of what God has given me?" I don't want to "bury" things. If they aren't being used, I know that someone else could be blessed by them, and that is a huge motivation for me. I want to bless others. If I become overly attached to "stuff" that I don't even use it is such a waste and would be the same as if those beautiful things were in the garbage.

Such a timely message for me I literally just spent 2 days clearing out an ocean of junk from my garage. Couldn’t even walk into it. Now it’s usable again. I love to declutter but I get Marissa and needing to come back to something. Having a place to put stuff you are using is so helpful.

My wife likes to hold on to stuff. She has recently started reducing the amount of stuff we have as we prepare to go out on our own trip around the U.S. I have been like Nathan, easy to get rid of stuff. As we whittle down our stuff it surprises me how little we need. And how much we need of the little we keep.

Today, I just moved 6 chairs from our breakfast table out to the RV garage...cause she bought 6 new ones... for a yet to be determined "garage sale" that may be 6 months, 12 months or 18 months from now?!? if it was me, I would have ran them down to the battered woman's shelter or worse case Goodwill... Loved this video!

Wonderful tips! It's amazing how much "stuff" you accumulate. I was amazed how much stuff we purged when we moved out of our house and how much stuff we still purged when we moved into our new house. In between that time we lived in an RV for about 9 months and that really got me intentional about things I bought. Our house now has a lot of storage areas but I told my family "just because we have a lot of storage doesn't mean we have to USE it!" Eventually I'd love to be on the road again so a lot of my purchases are bought with a "can this be useful in an RV" mentality. lol. And I'm like you, Marissa: a very emotional person about purging sentimental items. I love the idea you had with the boots as little flower vases!

Marissa-may I say that you aren't letting go of the memories. AND, as Nathan said, you have the treasure of having so much of this on video. (And paring down pictures and videos is an entire other issue of downsizing) I like to set boundaries too. How much space do I have for this (or these) things. We are finishing an 850 sq ft home that is replacing a 2300 sq ft farmhouse that burned down last year. I'm trying to exercise those downsizing muscles so I don't end up with a home that is stuffed full of stuff. That defeats the purpose to me. I will be doing the 30 day challenge (again) as we intentionally lighten our load as we move into our new space (and our new adventures) Love the idea of having other folks that can hold me accountable and that I can help them too.

We are downsizing our home and have been purging so much stuff! I am enjoying the process, but some rooms and closets are more difficult than others. My grandchildren (who I only get to see once or twice a year) had fun playing with several toys that their mother played with. Yes, I have kept toys (and books) for 45 years! So going from 3,000 sq ft to 2100 sf has forced me to make some hard choices! I feel your pain Marissa! We don't live in our RV and I don't know how on earth you get down to the bare bones!, but I am totally impressed with you both! Love you guys and your channel!

I have to give y'all credit where credit is due. It is inspiring to hear that you both can compromise for the sake of each other!! I am definitely like Nathan in regards to letting go of "stuff". Even the sentimental things aren't sentimental to anyone else so the pictures/videos of the memories is perfect. I have been an environmentalist and minimalist for many years now and still have more to downsize to move into my van however I no longer purchase anything that wouldn't also come into the van as well so the options are minuet. I have to NEED it and LOVE it, and it also should be friendly to the environment.

Hi there, I have to say I loved this video!! it so spoke to me. I am not yet an RV'er but want to so bad and this was so helpful in our home. It is just me and my husband, two cat's, one dog, and one Chinchilla that just past two days ago. We are currently living in a three bedroom house, and this was something that really spoke to me. I am one that keeps things, thinking we could use it later on for something else (hoarder of sorts, I agree), and my husband is the one who loves cloths and accessories. This episode I think will really benefit my husband and I as well as our kids, who are using our garage as a storage unit. Just one item a day is what I am going to ask of us, and I will let you know how it goes.

I’m 62 years old, and I still have, on my fireplace mantle, a toy fire engine. It was the last toy car my mom ever bought for me when I was a child. So it has traveled with me cross country and back through many different homes I’ve had. It stays where it is.
But think of the gas mileage you’ll gain with all that stuff out of your RV! 😁

So I am in the Nathan camp of relationship to stuff. Here is a very strong value I have that keeps the flow of stuff moving through my life. I literally hate the idea of all the resources of the earth that went into the creation of a material object just sitting in storage not being used. If we as a culture decide to take from the earth to create an object, then I want to know that it is being used and valued by another human being on the planet. I literally can feel the energy of that flow when I move an object back into the cycle of life. Hope that helps in some way.

Sounds like a good idea, till i saw what you were getting rid of. Some were safety items, other not so much. One thing i didn't see you do, to make more space by creatively pack. One idea is use vacuum bags to store seasonal items. It's foolish to throw them out unless they have been out grown. But you will cut down by over half when the air is sucked out of clothes or bedding, especially blankets.
    Just a thought for ya.

Part of the issue is even though you vacuum pack items you still have the weight, which is always in issue in an RV.

I totally get down sizing, and not having all the stuff you don't use. My husband is what I call a pack rat. He doesn't get rid of stuff. Example, he replaces the wiper blades on the truck. He keeps the old blades. Places them behind the back seat just in case one of the new blades breaks, or falls off. Think about doing this to every thing you replace. OMG!!!! Now, I deliberately make 3 piles. A his pile, her pile, and kids pile. Everyone goes through their pile, and creates a garbage pile, donate pile, and a sale pile. I've found my husband will put maybe 2 or three 3 items in his pile. That's when I go back, and NICELY ask him about things he's keeping. Eventually my husband realizes he doesn't need every thing. Now it may take 15 years.....LOL

Things always bring memories back for women. The same things don't ever bring back memories for men. Nathan isn't the only one. You could've put those special hats on your bedroom wall for decoration. I would've had a hard time getting rid of the hat that you wore when you renewed your vows. I know I could never get rid of Hensley's first pair of those pink boots! Nathan would just have to deal with it! lol
