    Thanks to you, I was able to get my radiator fans working again by replacing the relay for only $50 versus the hundreds they would have charged me at the mechanics for the full diagnosis, parts, and labor.

    I've had 3 of these so far. A 96, a 2000, & just bought a 2003 2 days ago. The first 2, I wired the fans up on toggle switches 😂😂 to be manually operated. I'm going to follow these step by step instructions & maybe I can actually fix #3 correctly 😂😂😂😂. Due to your educational tutorial, & how in depth you actually went, I also subbed. Love the manner in wich you teach. Felt like I was back in college again 😂😂. That direct eye contact, even to the camera, is the key. Thats old school right there. You know what I mean? Thanks for uploading.

    Thanks for the information. This fan relay definitely needs replacing on my 2001 Caravan because it has corroded so much the rivet end area of it broke off due to aluminum rot & I am also getting the proper CEL error code. However, I am not getting the constant 12V from the 40A fuse to the fan relay's Orange wire connection. The fuse is OK & the fuse's right side connection terminal on the underside plug has continuity from the fuse socket to the Orange wire. The Orange fan relay wire looks healthy (not discolored or hardened from being overheated) at the connector under the fuse box. Is there a junction box or a multi-pin connector between the 40A fuse terminal socket & the fan relay socket where oxidation may have occurred causing continuity loss? I could jumper a bypass wire directly from the underside fuse terminal to the relay socket but I prefer to fix it the correct way. I have a Chilton manual but it is very lacking in detail about the wiring harness. I used to repair electronics for a living so I am experienced with bad connections & wiring repairs. I can't afford the shop manual. Thanks in advance for any advice from anyone.

    Yeah, make sure to check the screw. I replaced mine 2 years ago. It began having issues. Limped it home checked the relay and it felt loose. I forced a larger screw in and the fans kicked on so it was a ground issue with the screw . Guess over time it loosened plus a bit of corrosion and the connect wasn't good at times.

    Thanks for the video !! Good ! Having a huge problem with Plymouth Voyager 1998, 2.5 litre engine, radiator cooling fans = 2, don't go on = car overheats in stop and go traffic, of course!?? Had a van in a garage, where they "screwed" everything up, they even did oil change, and when car was returned, there was no oil??? Forgot to put some in?? They suppose to flash cooling system, they fucked up drain plug, plastic, and car , of course was leaking coolant, plug was half open, I fixed that, put new plug in there! Anyway, they did change cooling fan resistor/ relay, actually they did change it, I checked that, but now cooling fans don't go on at all?? I did replace cooling temperature sensor, no help?? Tried to check, if they fucked up the wireing in cooling fan harness, they changed that too, can't really tell, seems fine?? Power on outside, other big wire next to it, ground on the other side, and signal wire next to it?? Is that correct?? Did replace fan assembly, fans work, of course, when you give 12 V on them?? Can't make signal to put fans on?? When turning AC on, which works fine, no fans?? And even engine warms up, no fans?? What could be wrong, I tested cooling fan sensor, which they replaced, seems still fine, did resistance test, neg. on left side and pos. on a middle and there is resistance, like .550 Ohms??? Bad one would be no resistance, am I right?? Please, help me , took a picture from new wireing, from harness, if you need that, I put it in here!!! Did they screw up wireing, or what ??? Thanks, and thanks for all your videos, very helpful =) PS. PCM can't be burned out, car works fine otherwise......;o)

    Informative, thank you Car Doctor, but didn't quite help me because the fan relay sensor looks different than mine and is located in a different spot on my 1998 Dodge Caravan (Sport). I did manage, however, to find MY van's relay sensor and replace it but it was a HUUUUGE pain bcuz it's mounted to a wall beneath the air box and air filter! The fans worked fine for a while but have stopped coming on while I'm driving. Engine doesn't overheat unless I'm in our horrible stop-and-go Seattle traffic or if I try to turn the A/C on. I'll need to figure out how to test the cooling fan motors to see if that's the issue or it could be that the thermostat is malfunctioning.

    Thanks for the video. It helped me narrow some stuff down. I have a 2007 with the symptoms you described. When I jumper the orange hot wire and the wire to the fans both fans work. But when I hook everything up and the engine heats up, only the left side fan comes on. The right side fan never does. I was told that the right side fan only came on at highway speed and when the A/C was on. Is there any truth to that, or should they both be running at the same time? It doesn't appear the wire to the right side fan goes directly to the radiator relay.

      The right does come on with A/C but not necessarily when on highway.

    Im having and issue, I noticed the temp needle on my panel was on 3/4, (once running it always stays static just shy of half way). So, I popped the hood and noticed the right fan wasnt working. The needle eventually went back to the middle. I've checked several times and the fan wont turn on despite the temperature. Im guessing it is a fried motor?

Had to buy the complete housing this time. Also, the thermostat was rusted, not sure if it had something to do with frying 2 fan motors.

      It sure would be good to see the temp sensor value displayed on a scan tool in data mode. It's possible there are stored codes related to temp sensor or fan operation in the PCM. Try checking the codes at an auto parts store that does that and also try clearing the codes.

    Well done video. I was able to walk straight through the entire process but replacement of the fan relay did not work. (06 Pacifica) I tested all four wires at the relay and all work as expected except not getting the intermittent signal on the fourth wire to trigger the fans. Both fans do work fine when bypassed. Temp gauge staying in mid range even when getting hot while idling. I assume this is either an issue with the temp coolant sensor or worst case pcm. For $10, I am going to try to change the coolant sensor first. Anything else I might be missing as the culprit?

    I did all this testing prior to seeing this video. I wasted money on a new relay and mine is still no good. I got two fans and a/c. Turn on the A/C and the fans do not come on. The ground wire to the relay is good, the 40a orange wire is good. jumpered the two large terminals and the fans do come on. Only thing I suspect is the wire coming from the PCM is not sending the signal to the relay or the PCM is not doing its job. I looked to where the PCM is located and it just looks like a nightmare to try and get at it and have a chance in hell of trying to ohm out the wire to the relay. I'd at least like to narrow it down to whether its the wire/connection or the PCM. Pretty annoying considering this 2005 van only has 130,000km on the odometer.

      Possibly. When the engine is cold fill the radiator and the reservoir. If its low and the problem is fixed you should check for leakage. Most times its the water pump.

    On early years the relay is under the drivers side head light under a black plastic box, then 200 and up under the air box attached to the frame. Remove the air box and look straight down. Sometimes both fans don't turn on until you turn on the a/c. Also check out ruclips.net/video/AdIYm9kM5E0/видео.html on how to test that last wire coming from the van computer if replacing the bad relay doesn't work.

    I am not getting 12V on the orange wire (using the battery Neg for a ground). The fan relay fuse is good & I am getting 12V at the fuse terminal. Both fans are good & I have temporarily connected one of them directly to the battery with an inline switch just in case I need to turn it on to cool the engine if I get stuck in traffic. The fan relay aluminum heat sink was very corroded on the riveted side which crumbled and broke off when I moved it. I am waiting for a Chilton's manual to come in a few days. In the meantime I am using a troubleshooting guide that covers this fan relay at a blog called 'The Supreme Pundit' (I am not affiliated with them). Thanks in advance for any suggestions

    Yup I gotta 2000 Caravan with the fans not working. They were working and not shutting off. I disconnected the battery and then reconnected the battery and the fans were off. I started up the engine but did not try the AC. Next day the battery was dead. I charged the battery and when I started the engine and put on the AC the fans did not turn on. In the evening I disconnected the connector to the temp sensor and the next day the battery was good. I replace the temp sensor but that was not the fix but the battery did not discharge. I replaced the fuse but when I checked the fuse with my volt meter it was good. I also replaced the fan relay. Mine was mounted on the frame. The fans are good as I disconnected the fans and jumped them to the battery. So I guess I have an open wire or a bad control module. I will have to try what you did here and use a test light then jumper the two leads.
    I guess if I don't have 12 volts on the orange I need to find a schematic and trace it back to the module. Thanks for this video. Gonna see if I can get it online from my library.

    Hey I think I'm going to have to replace the radiator in my wife's T&C. The transmission cooler is no longer part of the radiator is that correct? I did a pressure test and started losing fluid but before I could find where it was coming from it stopped. I replaced some of the fluid and tested again but didn't see any fluid on the ground. Gotta go use the mother in law's garage as the ground is a little cold right now on my back. How do you tell the difference between a standard and a heavy duty radiator? thanks Tim.

    • @ThecardoctorTV

      I wish I could help. I think your right about the cooler being separate. I would call the dealer parts guy with the Vin and get a part number for the radiator then cross it into an aftermarket number. Be sure to look at the pump since they are the biggest source of leakage.

      Yeah I'll pump up the pressure and get under there with my umbrella and sea what I can see. Hey I didn't check the cap and I think where the overflow comes down is where there was fluid. Thanks four4 fore for getting back so quick. Have a great day.

    2005 Dodge Caravan Radiator Fan Driver Side is not working. Passenger side is working pretty but not the Driver side. What should I do.

    I have a 2000 Chrysler T&C 3.8 liter engine. The radiator fan is working but it makes a loud squealing noise (maybe bad fan ball bearings?) I am not overheating and have no codes. Can it be the fan relay or the radiator fan? Please help

    question for you on a 2007 Dodge Caravan I have the passenger side fan when it comes on clicks. I'm going to replace the fan assembly but I was curious should both of these fans be running all the time? because I noticed the fan on the driver side running and the fan on the passenger side goes off and on at various times.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 лет назад

      No they don't usually both run all the time. They will cycle when the A/C is on.

      +The Car Doctor I saw that happen as you said when I replaced the fan assembly yesterday! At first when I started the vehicle they did not run as it got warmer I turned on the AC and both fans kicked on at the same time. after investigating the older fan assembly I noticed one of the fans turned really hard and clicked. that must have been the problem. would you be able to help me with one more question I've asked around and I'm not getting a straight forward answer. I lost some antifreeze because I had to remove the top hose the manual says to only use hoat antifreeze. what if the previous owner of this vehicle used let's say Prestone? if I go out and buy some hoat g05 zerex and added to the existing antifreeze will it cause any problems? you just never know what the previous owner put in there. from the color of the antifreeze it looks red if you put a piece of paper in it and pull it out it's pink on the paper but I'm sure the color doesn't really help me to diagnose what is in the vehicle currently. I have an 07 Dodge Caravan thank you

      That should be Chrysler 5 year coolant. You could add G05 but I would just get the Chrysler coolant if available.

      +The Car Doctor ok thank you. I suppose i should flush the whole system then and replace.

      Well it sounds like it has the Chrysler coolant in it. Should be pinkish in color.

    I have a 2002 jeep liberty and my a/c hasn't been working for a while and i never knew why. But recently my check battery light came one and my abs light flashed at me a couple time ( my check engine light is usually on because my gas cap is the wrong size) and my car would just stop using electricity or something ( the radio stopped a couple time and when i would turn the car off i would need a jump because it wouldn't turn back on. i just went to napa and got a new battery thinking thats what it was but my check battery light still comes on along with my engine light. So i took it to autozone and they said my cooling fan motor relay was malfunctioning. I was just wondering if this broken relay explains why my last battery drained so fast and why my abs light flashed.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 лет назад

      Might cause a battery drain but don't think it would effect an ABS light. Youll want to have the ABS codes checked and go from there.

    OK. I have a ? Car Doctor. my 2000 Plymouth experienced the over heating in traffic yesterday. had the wifey and my 4 kids with me. it was 101° yesterday here in Sacramento. the temperature read normal or in the middle. van started to sputter and shake then died. once I got it started enough to get it on to a side street parked and out of the way. I noticed the fans not working. ive been in a processes of reteaching the system readiness so I can smog it. I was having an issue with an after market radio which I kept having to unhook the battery. which of course makes my stupid van forget its readiness. so stock radio is back in. I say all that. cause 3 days ago I was doing the steps for HOS2 readiness, cold soak over night, minimum 8hrs van sits, on keys in door. nothing to make the pcm wake up. so I do the run idle 5min to open loop operation, then of for 10min. while I was warming it up. the fans came on as soon as I heard the thermostat open(open loop), so that's normal operation, plus I did the A/C fan check then too, turning a/c on and both fans immediately came on, normal operation again. so when u found yesterday sitting on the side of the road. i turned key on but didn't start it then turned the a/c to low fans should have come on but didn't. I got the van cooled down poorer cold water all over the radiator rush hour traffic had thinned down and made it home. later I went to talk to the idiots at Autozone, and no I don't think they are all idiots but there are a few that no nothing about vehicles. I know a few managers so I when to talk to him. I had the engine light pop on when it died earlier yet he scans and finds no new codes nor any pending codes. he tells me to check but more likely replace my relay. I'm thinking OK. here's the weirdest part. I got get in the then van and call it inquiring minds, curiosity or Mikey engineering I started the van and turned on the a/c and low and behold the fans came on. I'm thinking WTF? and I leave it on as I drive home. 2 blocks from home I hit a big pot hole and the van of course bounced around but also the fans stopped working. and right then it started to sputter and pop again. but I made it home safe in my drive way. what could cause that to happen? I see in your clip here it was partially plugged into the relay. could this be my problem? its a head scratcher for sure. I'm a capable mechanic I've worked as one for over 15year, I've replaced the entire cooling system(rad,water pump,thermostat, all new hoses etc...), replaced tranny, just put new front calipers, rotors and pads. I got in a fender bender. no unibody,frame damage but needed new upper core support, hood and tranny cooler. so this has me just confused. any help is greatly appreciated. thank for this and so many other vids. you've saved my life more than once. so thanx again.

    my 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager radiator cooling fans came on one morning about ten hours after I turned the key off. Is it the coolant temperature sensor, the relay or what? It's a 3.8L. I was told they didn't make that model that year with that engine. I bought the vehicle used.
