    Warning-- Don't overheat these vans !!! All engines used in these vans are prone to head gasket failure if overheated !!! I own 4 Mopar minivans years 2001 to 2007. They all have 2 areas that are prone to antifreeze leaks as they age. The first item is the heater T or Y pipe that is plastic and develops pinhole leaks that will gradually get worse. Replace them with an aftermarket one that is metal. The second guaranteed problem is the factory radiator WILL develop leaks on the left ( drivers) side top seam. If left alone, it will eventually blow apart suddenly ( ask me how I know!! ). If you are slowly losing antifreeze, check these two items first !!!

    • @welfareorphan
      @welfareorphan 3 года назад

      I was on a road trip when I smelled coolant. I looked under the hood and found water leaking from that top left seam. What's my best bet? To replace the radiator?

    • @charleskosyjana1295
      @charleskosyjana1295 3 года назад +3

      @@welfareorphan Yes, definitely replace the radiator with a HIGH QUALITY aftermarket one. DON'T buy the cheapest made in China one at your local Autozone, Advance or OReillys. These will only last 1 or 2 years at the most and will fail without warning possibly damaging your engine. Ask me how I know !!!

    Very helpful I have a 2006 Chrysler town and country I have a lower leak on the passenger side near the passenger side front tire on that lower pipe I noticed I have only get warm air before short amount of time as rust in the New England states rust builds up then have a leak again after using jb water repair stop leak. Had temp patch the hole in lower pipe! I have not yet replaced the tps or the thermostat after not starting it and getting a new vehicle 🚗. It has ran for over 30 min no problems then after about a few weeks went by and having to jumpstart the van for the 2nd time and getting it to start the lower pipe repair I had done previously with stop leak had gave and now leaks like a hose I haven’t sunk a bunch of money into this vehicle as it needs a rear end traction bar or sway bar mount thang uh majig and inner and outer rocker panels that need to be replaced with no more than 200 hundred thousand miles I am reluctant to get rid of it as I’ve been through this with an older Buick constantly over heating but I’d love to keep this vehicle to use for camping or hauling things locally it just sits here and my mother tells me to get it out of her driveway kinda sucks only paid 300 dollars and it last me a hole year I did get the reliability I need but hate to get rid of it if it’s something as simple as a lower radiator intake pipe and or a simple radiator/ or fan/ thermostat or fuse / relay my goodness especially if I can get another year out of it after rust repair and bon-doe repair and minor repairs I only have 300 dollars plus two front new tires and past bon-doe repair work with jb stop leak and 60 dollars or less in coolant do you think it’s worth trying to repair ut if not guess I’m settling for 75 dollar scrap vehicle kinda caught between a rock and hole and a hard spot with this one

    • @RussShawTV
      @RussShawTV  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment Sergio. A couple of questions…
      You mentioned “the pipe” are you talking about the lower radiator hose? I’m guessing your talking about ‘the pipe’ where the radiator hose attaches to the radiator? Is it the radiator leaking for the hose?
      Both of those are pretty easy fix. I would replace the radiator. End of the lower hose is bulging or soft I would replace that too.
      With of these caravans it’s not just the radiators failure on the outside due to rust and corrosion but on the inside too, they get clogged.
      There’s some great deals online for radiators. Like half the price of Napa, O’Reilly etc. 1A Auto, Amazon garage, Rock Auto is cheapest although not a big fan of their return policy is.

      @@RussShawTV hey thank man yeah it’s the pipe that runs from water pump to lower radiator hose I believe it’s under the serpentine belt on passenger side behind rotor and caliper ! I can basically stick my pinky inside the hole after using water weld that only help up a month or two of driving before it just cause more pressure and a bigger hole 🕳 also thanks for the help really would love to have a second vehicle just to haul things in or even go camping 🏕 but again thanks for the info greatly appreciated .

    Are the Left and Right radiator fans interchangable? In other words if I find a Left in a salvage yard but need a Right, will that work? Also, if both cables reach both fans swapping the good fan's cable to the bad one could be a quick way to eliminate wiring if one side isn't running (aka, Rat Test). Nice job,Russ. Thanks for the good info.

    • @RussShawTV
      @RussShawTV  3 года назад

      Dude! That’s a great question. I’m not really sure. I’m pretty sure the pigtails are interchangeable but how the fans themselves slide in may be different. I can’t remember it’s been a while since I made this video. If you go to a wrecking yard though you should be able to pull both. I’m guessing you may be dealing with a scenario where one of them is damaged.
      If one is damaged you still look at the mounting hardware And the length of wire to make sure it will work.
      I’d be curious to know your findings. Good luck my friend thanks for the question and being a subscriber.

    Hello Russ I have a 2004 Grand caravan and I have a new radiator and cap and thermostat.
    My Gage doesn't go past the half mark but my engine gets so hot after 10 minutes of driving. But you can feel the heat coming through the corner panels and the hood and you can't remove the dipstick because it's stuck due to the heat. This is intermittent it doesn't happen all the time.
    Both fans are working. No leaks that are visible antifreeze is at the right level. I am guessing that the temperature sending unit is not working. But I don't know what is causing this issue?
    I was thinking maybe the water pump? But then if should happen all the time?

    • @RussShawTV
      @RussShawTV  4 месяца назад

      @@davidwolf2478 yes it sounds like the temperature sensor has failed. If the temperature sensor fails, it’s not going to kick your fans on when they should be kicking on.

      I did a video on the temperature sensor here on my channel somewhere.

    Your video was extremely helpful and I subscribed :) thank you for posting it! I have a 2014 Chrysler town and country mini van with 128k miles. The past month or so it has been running really rough. There is a light on that looks like an exclamation point, I had them hook it up to diagnostic machine at advance auto and there were no codes, and the man said it was my tires, but all of my tire pressures were normal. So he said maybe a sensor, so I’ve just been ignoring the light and not really worried about it. The past couple weeks I noticed the AC not getting very cool (I live in Florida and it is HOT) and then I noticed the AC will sometimes blow normally and sometimes really weakly even when all the way cranked up on high. I haven’t tried to use the heat. Every few seconds the AC goes from blowing strongly to weakly. Today I drove it and dropped kids off at 2 dif schools maybe 5 min wait at each school car line, and I also had the AC on to try to defrost the windows. (Roughly 30 min total drive time in total) I was about .5 mile from my house, and a red light that looks like water waves and a flag came on for a second and beeped once, which prompted me to check the temp gauge and it was only 1 notch away from the highest level H. I was on the highway and I immediately turned off the AC. I noticed when I let off the gas and coasted, the temp would go down some (still over the halfway hot point though) luckily I already at my street and was able to mostly coast my way home. What do you think could be causing this?

I drove the vehicle well over 100 miles every day Monday through Friday for over a decade. So each time it broke down it cost me money until I could get it back on the road. I maintained the vehicle well, oil changes transmission fluid changes etc. But even keeping up with maintenance I realize I was very fortunate to get the vehicle to this high mileage. For me as long as it’s not something major in the drivetrain engine or transmission everything else is fixable. Yes it’s a pain in the but, but it’s a lot cheaper than going out and buying a new vehicle. Or God for bid going out in financing a used vehicle. Used vehicles tend to be another money pit. Depending on what you use them for. Me I needed a van to do my job. If you need a daily driver to get you to work and back. Maybe sell it and get a Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Acura these vehicles tend to have a lot better reputation in the long run.

    Hi Shaw Family ... Excellent knowledge video on overheating.... Question for you have u finally decided to tear into your Chevy Sonic yet? have they decided to take it back ? If not are u interested in selling it for parts ? Lmk k... 🙂

      Hey man good to hear from you!
      As you may know we filed bankruptcy last year. We agreed to forfeit the vehicle but Wells Fargo decided it wasn’t worth their time to come pick it up.
      Our Bankruptcy attorney sent a letter over six months ago but still haven’t heard from Wells Fargo. Legally they have to either give us the title or come get the vehicle. If they give us the title I think I’m going to try and fix it. Take the top of the engine off hopefully it’s just a head gasket. As I showed my video though there is no compression in three of the cylinders and very little in the fourth. If it’s worse than it’s worth I might sell it for parts.

      @@RussShawTV Russ if it's not electrical then I'd have to say if not the head gasket and it's not leaking coolant internally or externally than id check your timing chain for sure..I know these engines run Hot its 221 degrees before the thermostat opens and engine coolant temp sensors fail and allow these engines to over cook... and with all the plastic parts they just start leaking everywhere ... keep me posted as I am more than willing to share with you all I know about this car as I own one myself and have a scanner and gauges to tell me so much data I'm sure I can help u.. ps please keep up the chicken videos my little ones love them.. your friend from Pa

      dakota47v8 Yeah the timing chain is good. It’s losing coolant from God knows where. Good sign of a head gasket blown. Did a compression test in an earlier video that revealed the engines demise.

      There are some videos out there on how to clean a catalytic converter instead of replacing it. Might save you some money.

    Your heater will also not work if your water pump is bad

    • @RussShawTV
      @RussShawTV  3 года назад

      Yeah usually if your water pump goes bad that means it’s leaking. In the vast majority of cases when the water pump goes out it’s because the bearings fail and the seal around the spindle breaks. And you’ll have to keep putting water in it to make your heater work.
