The History of UFC Video Games Part II - 'Face The Pain.'

- In Part I of The History of UFC Video Games, we took a look at where it all began. In the years to come, the Ultimate Fighting Championship evolved with grander entrances, more animated athletes inside the cage and bigger names to capture the imaginations of the audience. And with the passage of time... came the expansion of technology. The Sega Dreamcast was discontinued less than two years after it’s North American launch. The PlayStation was on its last legs, quietly performing in the shadow of the PlayStation 2. Nintendo’s GameCube and Microsoft’s Xbox were alive on the scene as well. These 3 consoles were powering a new generation of gaming. A generation that the Ultimate Fighting Championship did not intended to miss. On today’s installment of The History of UFC Video Games, we’ll dive deep into this generation’s MMA offerings. Would the quality bar be raised high enough to match the technological one? There’s only one way to find out.

Literally every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I watch this content on my lunch breaks at work. Always look forward to it.
Good god this is an entire timecapsule into Mickey's Fine Malt Liquor and Xenergy by Xience
I can't believe you made such a fantastic Tim and Eric reference 😂😂
That guitar riff at 20:09 when Shamrock taps Ortiz is a staple of the early 2000s 🎸
Another masterful episode of video game history, capped off with a short tribute to a beautiful four-legged friend. My wife and I have had numerous animal companions, large and small, over the last two decades we've been together. They all touch us in their own unique ways, and I'm sure Bimmy was no different. Thank you for sharing him with all of us, Ian. He was a beautiful boy, and worthy of all the love.
Love this channel!
As of few months ago, May 15th, I surpassed 4 years of being alcohol free. I would say sober, but I still smoke weed occasionally. Anyway, one of the biggest hurdles I faced in recovery was that i just could not find pleasure in my former hobbies. I didnt find pleasure in films or music, music being a huge part of my life for many many years.
Anyway, this channel was one of the first things I found enough enjoyment in to actually take my mind off my anxiety and the pain that im nearly always in due to my pancreas being tottaly obliterated by alcohol(chronic pancreatitis). Feeling that sensation of thinking about something not drug or alcohol related, and yet, still feeling genuine interest and desire gave me that reassurance that I can have fun and dind pleasure without alcohol. This is probably the one self discovery that has been the most important with respect to staying alcohol free on a day to day basis. There is no way I could EVER thank you enough.
I’m proud of you, dude. I don’t know you, never met you, but I’m extremely proud of you. My dad died at 60 years old of a combination of cancer and chronic pancreatitis, man. What you’re doing is huge, and while anxiety and depression might creep in here and there, that’s normal. What’s beyond normal, what crosses over into extraordinary, is your commitment to getting and staying clean. And every day you wake up clean is another day you should be breaking your arm patting yourself on the back, because you’re earning it. Keep it up, dude. I’m happy for you.
Your the best man!!! I really mean it, you just made my year.
First off RIP Bimmy. My condolences.
Secondly, I saw that this video is Sean Ross Sapp approved. That's so awesome.
I remember that Carlos Newton school yard choke he did to Pat to win the Welterweight title, one of the best submission wins in the UFC.
Another fantastic Retrospective, but man, Rest In Peace to the master, Bimmy!
This dropped at the perfect time. Just finished my rewatch of The History of RE and was itching for more retrospective content at work.
This was an awesome part to the series. I truly loved learning so much more of the UFC during its infancy, and how their games have evolved throughout the years. Awesome work, Ian, and I can’t wait for part 3, as this is where I started to get some experience with UFC games, and I’m so excited for your thoughts😁. Until then, Ian, I love you and all the DanDans. Stay safe, y’all😊❤️.
The UFC Undisputed games were awesome, most favorite one in that trilogy was UFC Undisputed 3.
I can’t wait for the next time of this series one of the best ufc games my childhood right there
Sudden Impact was my introduction into UFC fandom. I loved the game. It kind of taught me what mma was by learning fight disciplines and moves. Some of the stuff was outdated. I do remember that being on the ground and against the cage was a death sentence. Triangle chokes are no longer a thing as everyone can easily defend them. Fun game though.
I still have throwdown and sudden impact, i dont think ive played them since about 2010 or so but this brought back some memories.
I remember being so excited for Sudden Impact when I heard about its release. The first UFC game that was released since I've started following.
This was interesting to see. I rented UFC Throwdown when it came out, beat career mode, and haven't picked it up since. I hadn't thought about that game again since seeing this. That 3 day rental being the perfect about of time with it and it didn't have a whole lot of depth to it. Not being a UFC fan at the time and only being passingly familiar with it, I was only concerned about the core gameplay. It felt like it just missed the mark in that department but it was close.
UFC is now in their 30th year of operation. Crazy to think about that.
RIP Bimmy! 😢 I salute you. Also, i was not a fan of these games but always a fan of your retrospectives! Definitely looking forward to the undisputed series!
As a MMA Fan I Appreciate This Retropective loved UFC Pride and Bellator
Same
The first one's went out like a fighting game.
Ko's etc.
Remember playing at a GameStop this
Girl freaked out when i was punching
The guy bloody on the ground.
Blood flying.
She was like he's punching that guy
Bloody on the ground.
@jamal...typical npc comment number 22
Bellator is getting shut down after the next few shows unfortunately. Sucks
Just when I think I know something you come and show me that there's a whole lot more about it and I appreciate you for it! I love video game retrospectives in general but yours in particular are my favorite
Ken Shamrock will always be one of the most underrated competitors. Whether it was in the WWF of UFC, he was a hot commodity. IMHO that guy had so much to bring to the table, in both combat sports and professional wrestling.
Hell yeah, so pumped for this! Thanks again Ian!
"He looks like 30 miles of bad road."
LMAO 🤣😂💀
Shane Mcmahon wanted to buy UFC in 2000 but Vince said no
So glad you’re finally doing the UFC games been waiting for years og😂😂❤❤
Can't wait for part 3!
Thank you Ian! I love the UFC games!
Lol Sudden Impact's Story Mode is basically a training camp
Great Video As Always Ian Loved It & Also RIP Bimmy ❤️
I'm not gonna lie I wait for the full version so I can add it to my playlist and watch all the retrospectives in one sitting and I wanna say thank you for introducing me to resident evil I've started it but am having trouble progressing lol I enjoy the videos they remind me of when I was 5 or 6 yrs old being introduced to MK, WCW Revenge, here comes the pain, and street fighter which I hope to see somewhere down the way
I think your videos are keep on increasing in quality, good job Ian.📈
Hey man, long time viewer. Just wanted to say how appreciative I am for this channel. All your content is so enjoyable to watch and listen to. It’s clear that you love what you do and you really have a talent for producing this stuff. Even the hours long analysis of movies full of back and forth banter are a blast.
I’m having issues with PayPal and Patreon right now but as soon as I get it fixed I’m subbing. And I never subbed to anyone until now
Keep doing what you’re doing. Great stuff!!
I love these docs so damn much. Great job!!!
Dude you're the man. Love your work.
Always love being notified you uploaded, perfect way to start a weekend, keep up the great work man!
Loving this look back at the pre-THQ UFC games! So good!
16:46 That was hilarious! XD So blunt and to the point!
Dude these retrospectives are awesome man! Not the biggest ufc fan anymore but who doesn't like knocking out dudes in video game form brotha lol

Nice drive by shot at Alberto Del Rio, I respect it
I love the game play of Wrestling games and Mortal Kombat that I have got while being a fan of 616Entertainment. But, "The History of" and "Retrospective" series are smooth as butter. Even if it's a game or series that I don't care about, I am watching and waiting for the next one. Keep up the great work Ian and can't wait for the new ones from the Patreon goals!
I love seeing a Tiger Mask homage in a UFC game given his shoot-style stuff in Japan
Good deal Ian. Can't wait for the next part.
17:46 When I tell you my jaw dropped 😂😂 That was ridiculous!
This was so well done.
Now that’s how you kickoff a weekend 👌🏻 Thanks man, from this excited DanDan 🤘🏻❤️
My only knowledge of Andrei Arlovski is the sweet fight scenes he has in those two Universal Soldier films he was in. Seriously, if you've not seen the fight he has with Scott Adkins you're missing out
Awesome video Ian I’m loving the series so far as a channel fan and MMA game connoisseur. But a small aside about the goofy Carlos Newton intro- he honestly is the one and only representative of “Dragon Ball Jiu Jitsu”. We need another DBJJ champion
Carlos Newton LEGIT called his style Dragon Ball Jiu Jitsu and would do the Kamehameha as a taunt. I hated him for beating Matt Hughes but respected his gimmick :D
Fantastic Tim and Eric Zone Theory reference
PlayStation 1 lasted from Sept. 1995 to 2004 with Madden 2005 being the last Madden on PS1
Love these history of videos man. Of course I’m a huge fan of history. Hell it was my favorite subject in highschool next to shop/welding 😂. I hear your going to be doing one on GTA, did I hear that correctly? Keep up the great work bud.
Edit: yes I did hear that correctly 😂.
Awesome video
I love the mma & this series amazing content
Great video, I would love to see you do a series on the K-1 games too.
I didn’t start watching UFC until Brock Lesnar started kicking and he signed up in 2009. Every one in school would be talking about this.
Nice video Ian! I am looking forward to the undisputed video.
And RIP little Bimmy
Mark Coleman jogging in to the arena😂
At the rate we are going with these custom characters, I can't wait to see Pizza Boy, Dick Douche and Hard Rock Joe take the spotlight
There was another wrestler that wore a mask to the MMA ring. Jushin Thunder Liger. Liger wore a simple mask and gave MMA a shot. Actually come to think of it. A few wrestlers became MMA fighters.
Nathan Jones
Bobby Lashley
Minoru Suzuki
Batista
Sean O'Haire
Giant Silva
Bart Gunn
Shinsuke Nakamura
Kazushi Sakuraba
Masakatsu Funaki
Kazuyuki Fujita
And probably more.
It is so like you to make a silly character in career mode! XD You remind me so much of Nikateen!
Ufc on Dreamcast was dope as a kid. Creates character max stat cheat was Best Buy I believe if memory serves I was like 8-9 at the time
I went to decision on Sudden Impact and i know the feeling lol. I got screwed twice on those decisions
In ufc throw down on the GameCube i ended up, winning all 5 championship belts, in championship mode in just 1 sitting.
UFC throwdown was a lot different on PS2 compared to GC as I had it on GC.
16:55 you underestimate the overlap between Tim and Eric and 616 viewers lol
616 Meets The UFC Amazing
*RIP BIMMY*
sorry for your loss man.
pets are like family, no matter how big or small.
thanks for another great video!
Sorry about ur buddy that sucks I had a few hamsters as a kid and they all died and it sucked every time so I hope u find a new friend and keep up the great videos u r probably my fav RUclipsr to watch right now I love a bunch but ur retrospectives r amazing and they have taught me a lot as well as showing me things I didn't know or acknowledge before and also shows me a different point of view which also allows to learn by seeing things from your point of view which isn't to much off of mine lol we love a lot of the same things Wrestling horror movies I would say the only difference is I'm more of a batman guy than Superman but I do like Superman anyways I just wanted to give u my best wishes on your loss and hope u have a great one and continue to put out great vids like this one and by the way hope this isn't weird but love you too bro
I played the gbc version heavy back in 2002 but, I didn't played it on the ps1
These games are awesome.
23:27...looks like matt just woke up
Your appreciation for Tim & Eric is never lost on me and pretty much guarantees we would be friends if we met. Awesome retrospectives on these old UFC games that very few people have played during the lean years of the company.
I had no interest in UFC until I watched your videos in this series!
When UFC games were still beginning.
Tapout actually came out 4 months before Throwdown.
Just in time for UFC291 this weekend!!
Been watching your channel now since the start of Covid, and absolutely love it, even when you cover games that aren't necessarily my genre, because you're analysis and feedback is so well presented.
Keep up the excellent work!
Let's gooo!
I remembered WWE fans got pissed off at Brock Lesnar because he was a UFC champion lol 😂 I was more into UFC than WWE back in high school.
Throwdown looks like if wii sports had mma.😂😂
The time has come!!
R.I.P. Bimmy. 😢
I remember when Dana White was promoting the first 360 and PS3 games. One interviewer said something to the effect that the previous games were fine, but maybe had some limitations, and Dana White blurted out, "They were pieces of shit." The interviewer then asked what was better about the new game and Dana said, "Well, the graphics for one. It looks way more realistic...." And then he trailed off because he had no idea what he was talking about.
He also damned EA to hell because at first they didn't want to make a UFC game, but after MMA caught on they started making their own game, EA Sports MMA. Then he swore the UFC would never work with them. Oh Dana White, that little guy...
17:09... it's nice to know that his friend is X pac.. surely his advice will take him very far .....sarcasm
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also known as the 'baby-faced assassin'.
UFC Throwdown was not a PS2 exclusive. It also appeared on the Gamecube.
I mention that multiple times in the video.
great video dandan! Just wanna point out, in that clip with Arlovski and Rodriguez, apart from the random ass judging scores:
9+8+9=26
9+10+9=28
So yeah, no majority draw to speak off. But man, no UFC event before or after could score 9:9 off any fight, no matter how even it may seem.
Two of the scores were the same, one of the scores was for Ricco. Those two scores are the majority, silencing the score for Ricco.
Which is indeed a majority draw.
And there have been 9-9s as well, but only when a fighter wins a round but has a point defected due to fouls. It’s rare, but it has happened!
@616Entertainment well, I'll be damned. These scoring systems needed some refurbishing, glad the next games don't pull these shenanigans. Cheers Ian!
I popped so hard for Tim and Eric lol
Ufc throw down is a little different on ps 2 then on the GameCube version
Carlos Newton did have the announcers say he did DBZ jiu-jitsu though in UFC and PRIDE strangely enough, will the PRIDE FC game be mentioned?
A cross between Kasey Kassem and Channing Tatum? That's the best guess I got👍🤣
Google the name, lol
Great work Ian!
I can’t wait for part 3 the undisputed series is still my favorite UFC games to this day
DONT SKIP THE ADS!
RIP🙏
RIP Bimmy :(
🎉
Rip bimmy.
6:01...in WHAT world does ANY jiu jitsu practitioner have THAT type of stance
10:47 gimme your lunch money
6:13
Yes I did and thanks Cro Cop...He really is a POS so you're spot on, Ian. 😊
I'm new to this channel why does Ian call all us DanDans?
